You can use FFmpeg to publish prerecorded video into MediaMTX, then configure MediaMTX to forward the feed to YouTube over RTMPS. MediaMTX documents an endless loop for a single file, not a ready-made multi-file playlist workflow. For a playlist, you must supply an FFmpeg-readable input and verify its order, transitions, media compatibility, and recovery yourself before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s actual status in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- FFmpeg and MediaMTX installed on a computer or server that can remain running with a stable network connection. These are software components; the documentation does not prescribe a particular machine.
- A playlist source your FFmpeg workflow can read. The MediaMTX guide demonstrates looping one file, but does not specify a multi-file playlist format or command.
- The rights and permissions needed to livestream every video and audio track in the playlist.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key shown for it. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, and retrieve the current value from Studio if it changes. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the current YouTube ingest URL and key available for the MediaMTX forwarding setup. Do not rely on an endpoint or certificate fingerprint copied from an old example: MediaMTX notes that these details can reflect the values reported when its documentation was checked. Publish video into MediaMTX with FFmpeg
MediaMTX’s documented FFmpeg example loops a single MP4 indefinitely and publishes it to a local RTMP path:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream
Here, -re reads the file at its native rate, -stream_loop -1 repeats that input without a set limit, and -c copy copies the streams rather than re-encoding them. Replace file.mp4 with your file path and use the MediaMTX path configured for your setup. This example is specifically for a single file; it is not a multi-file playlist recipe. MediaMTX also documents an RTSP publishing example, but the appropriate local publishing protocol depends on the FFmpeg workflow and client configuration you choose. Prepare and verify a multi-file playlist
The cited MediaMTX guide does not establish how to feed a multi-file playlist, guarantee gapless playback, or provide transition behavior. Choose an FFmpeg-readable playlist input that fits your files and workflow, then validate it before connecting it to a continuous broadcast. Check that paths resolve on the machine running FFmpeg, files play in the intended order, audio and video remain synchronized, and transitions behave as expected. Test the actual codecs and containers in your files; do not assume that a playlist that opens locally will necessarily produce a feed YouTube accepts.
Make sure the resulting stream contains both audio and video. MediaMTX warns: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” Confirm the incoming feed in the Live Control Room preview and review its health feedback before depending on it.

Forward the MediaMTX stream to YouTube
Configure MediaMTX to forward the published path to YouTube using RTMPS. In the forwarding destination, use YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and the stream key separated by #, following MediaMTX’s current forwarding instructions. Since the endpoint and certificate details can change, copy neither blindly from an older configuration example; confirm the active ingest details in YouTube Studio and apply the current MediaMTX certificate guidance. Check the broadcast before relying on it
- Confirm in YouTube Studio that the preview shows the intended playlist content and that YouTube is receiving both audio and video.
- Watch enough of the playlist to verify its ordering and transitions, including the point where it repeats or moves between files.
- Check that the FFmpeg process, MediaMTX, host, and network remain available for the planned run. A looping input alone does not demonstrate uninterrupted publishing.
- Test what happens if the FFmpeg process, host, or network stops, and decide how you will notice and recover from an interruption. The cited examples do not establish automatic restart or failover.
- Confirm that you have permission to stream each recording, including its music, footage, and other incorporated material. The technical setup does not grant content rights.
Plan for continuous operation and YouTube archiving
A repeated file and a continuously available YouTube broadcast are separate operational concerns. The loop only repeats its input; it does not prove that a process, machine, or network failure will recover automatically. For a 24/7 setup, plan for a running host, network availability, monitoring, and a recovery procedure, and validate those behaviors in your own environment.

YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish indefinite archiving for a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions also say to stop sending content and end the stream when finishing. YouTube does not show an incoming feed
Confirm that FFmpeg is publishing to the MediaMTX path you configured and that MediaMTX is forwarding that path to the current YouTube RTMPS URL with the correct key. Check the Live Control Room preview and health feedback, and verify that the key has not been reset or changed.
The feed is rejected or remains unavailable
Check that the channel is eligible to livestream, then confirm the stream has both audio and video. MediaMTX says YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Also recheck the current ingest URL and certificate guidance rather than assuming a stored endpoint or fingerprint is still current.

The single-file example works, but the playlist does not
The documented loop command covers one input file, not a multi-file playlist. Verify your playlist format, file paths, order, transitions, and media compatibility in your FFmpeg workflow; do not treat the single-file command as proof that a particular playlist input is supported.
The stream stops during a long run
A loop does not provide automatic recovery for a failed publisher, host, or network. Identify which part stopped, restore it, and test a monitoring and recovery procedure before depending on the setup for continuous operation.
