SRS Configuration for a Continuous YouTube RTMP Stream

SRS’s local RTMP URL is an ingest point, not YouTube’s destination. Here’s how to separate the relay roles, use YouTube’s settings, and plan for continuous operation.

To send a continuous stream to YouTube through SRS, treat the path as two separate connections: an encoder publishes to SRS, and SRS must then forward the stream to the YouTube ingest URL using the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. SRS’s documented sample URL, rtmp://localhost/live/livestream, is for publishing into SRS, not YouTube. Do not paste YouTube credentials into that local URL or guess forwarding directives: the official SRS pages reviewed do not establish a complete, release-specific YouTube relay configuration.

Understand the SRS-to-YouTube path before configuring it

SRS is the server component in a relay setup. FFmpeg or OBS can publish a feed to an SRS RTMP endpoint; a separate SRS forwarding configuration is needed to send that feed onward to YouTube. Alternatively, an encoder can publish directly to YouTube without SRS. Choose one topology deliberately rather than combining endpoints by guesswork.

  • Encoder to SRS: The SRS RTMP documentation uses rtmp://localhost/live/livestream as an example ingest URL. It is a local SRS destination, not YouTube’s server address. The v5 RTMP page is archived. SRS v5 RTMP documentation
  • SRS to YouTube: YouTube supplies its own ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. SRS must be configured to forward the incoming stream to that separate destination. The exact forwarding directives and destination construction are not established by the cited official SRS pages, so verify them in documentation for the precise SRS release you deploy.
  • Direct publishing: If SRS is not needed for your architecture, configure OBS or FFmpeg to publish straight to YouTube using the URL and key supplied by YouTube.

SRS’s current Docker getting-started guide demonstrates running SRS in a container and using FFmpeg to publish a looping sample file. That proves a basic local ingest workflow, not a complete unattended SRS-to-YouTube relay. SRS Docker getting started

Choose and verify an SRS release

Check current SRS release guidance before deploying and pin the version you intend to run. The v5 RTMP page is marked archived, while the v7 RTMP page is marked unstable; the Docker guide’s ossrs/srs:5 example is a demonstration, not a statement that v5 is the preferred production release. The official build guide covers starting SRS with a configuration file, checking status and logs, and publishing with FFmpeg or OBS. Use those checks to confirm that your server starts and accepts an input, but do not treat a successful local publish as proof that YouTube forwarding works. SRS build and getting-started guide

SRS v7 documents an idle-publisher timeout and warns that it conflicts with forwarding. If you are considering idle-kick behavior, confirm its effect for your version and relay design before enabling it. SRS v7 RTMP documentation

Get the YouTube destination and protect the key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube says that if the control room initially shows ordinary RTMP, its instructions let you reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube encoder settings and YouTube RTMPS guidance
  3. Enter the YouTube URL and key in the destination fields of the component that publishes to YouTube—SRS in a relay design, or the encoder in a direct-publishing design. Keep them separate from the SRS local ingest URL.
  4. Handle the key as a password. YouTube describes it as the credential/address that lets the encoder send a feed for YouTube to accept; do not expose it in a public configuration, screenshot, or repository. YouTube RTMPS guidance

Exact SRS forwarding syntax is release-dependent and is not specified in the official pages cited here. Consult the documentation matching your pinned build before writing the destination configuration; avoid publishing a guessed copy-and-paste relay file.

Set encoder parameters for YouTube

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. The guidance describes YouTube ingest; confirm that every component in your SRS relay path supports the codec and protocol you choose. YouTube encoder settings

Setting YouTube guidance Practical application
Video bitrate, 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended Use this row only when the stream is 1080p/30 H.264. YouTube publishes separate guidance by format and codec.
Video bitrate, 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended Use the 60 fps guidance for 1080p/60 H.264, not for a different resolution or codec.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds Set the encoder’s GOP/keyframe interval accordingly and verify it in the output.
Audio bitrate 128 Kbps for stereo; 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround sound Choose the value that matches the audio channel layout.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate rather than a variable-rate mode.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder, SRS build, or internet connection can sustain them. Match output to the source and intended viewers, consult YouTube’s codec-specific table for other formats, then test representative motion and audio before going public. YouTube encoder settings

Plan for continuous operation, not just looping

The SRS Docker example uses FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 -re to loop a sample input while publishing to SRS. The loop flag keeps that file source sending; it does not, by itself, supervise FFmpeg, restart a failed process, monitor the source, rotate a stream key, create a YouTube event, or recover a dropped YouTube connection. • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Design and test those operational responsibilities separately. In particular, define who or what detects a stopped publisher or failed relay, how it is restarted, and how YouTube stream-health messages are monitored. Do not assume that an SRS sample command supplies production recovery behavior.

Size the upload connection

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate. Include all simultaneous outputs in the total; if primary and backup outputs are both sent, account for both plus headroom. Measure outbound throughput on the actual connection and account for other users and network disruptions. YouTube streaming tips

Decide how to handle long broadcasts and archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a broadcast may exceed 12 hours and a complete archive matters, plan separate recording or segmentation instead of relying on one automatic archive to cover the full run. YouTube says to stop sending content to end the stream. YouTube encoder workflow

Troubleshoot by isolating each link in the chain

  • SRS accepts the encoder, but YouTube receives nothing: Confirm that the SRS-to-YouTube forwarding leg is configured, uses the URL and key from Live Control Room, and matches the documentation for your deployed SRS version. A successful publish to rtmp://localhost/live/livestream tests SRS ingest only.
  • YouTube rejects the feed or reports an ingest problem: Recheck the selected YouTube URL, stream key, and whether RTMPS is being used as intended. Treat the key as a credential and replace it through YouTube if it has been exposed.
  • Playback stutters or stream health degrades: Compare the actual outgoing bitrate with available upload bandwidth, including other outputs, and restore YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check health messages while testing representative content. YouTube streaming tips
  • The stream stops when the input process exits: A loop flag is not a process supervisor. Add and test independent monitoring and restart behavior for the publisher and relay; the SRS sample does not establish those production functions.
  • A long stream lacks a complete archive: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours should have a separate recording or segmentation plan if retaining the whole program is important. YouTube encoder workflow

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo avoids running an SRS server, encoder process, and home connection yourself: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; the first day is free with no card.
