Choose your YouTube Live bitrate from a sustained upload-speed test—not your broadband plan’s advertised download speed. For H.264, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, but a slower or variable connection may need a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to stay stable. Restream’s July 9, 2026 guidance suggests keeping video bitrate at no more than half your upload speed; treat that as a conservative rule of thumb, not a guarantee or an India-specific preset.
How to choose a bitrate for your connection
- Measure upload speed under realistic conditions. Run a speed test on the same connection and device you plan to stream from, at a time and in a location representative of the broadcast. YouTube advises selecting a quality that produces a reliable stream based on your connection. An advertised download figure does not establish how much upload capacity is available.
- Set resolution and frame rate first. Then choose a bitrate that the connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations differ by resolution and frame rate; use the figures in the table below, not figures for another codec.
- Leave room for variation. Restream’s July 9, 2026 rule of thumb is to keep video bitrate at or below half of measured upload speed. It is vendor guidance—not a YouTube requirement—and cannot guarantee stability. If the connection fluctuates, choose a lower setting and test.
- Test representative content. Before going live, include audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, then adjust settings if the stream is unstable.
YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendations
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations for the H.264 ingest codec; the 1080p30 minimum is distinct from its recommended bitrate. YouTube’s table also includes other codecs, whose values should not be mixed with these H.264 figures.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps recommended |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
A 720p stream at 60 fps has the same H.264 recommendation as 720p at 30 fps, while the 1080p recommendations vary by frame rate. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a given Indian broadband connection can sustain them. Choose the highest setting that passes a realistic stability test.
Encoder settings that matter
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Select the bitrate guidance for your chosen codec; the table above is H.264 only.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Viewer playback: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Your encoder’s ingest bitrate is not necessarily the bitrate every viewer receives.
Check the outgoing bitrate in Restreamer
After connecting Restreamer to YouTube Live, its main window displays the live stream bitrate. Use that display to verify the outgoing stream, but do not treat it as a substitute for measuring sustained upload capacity or checking YouTube stream health. See the Restreamer YouTube connection guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to change when the stream is unstable
- Low or fluctuating upload capacity: Lower the encoder bitrate. Restream’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends lowering resolution or frame rate when quality is poor or unstable.
- Bitrate fits the test but the stream still falters: Repeat a representative test and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. A single speed-test result does not establish that upload will remain steady throughout a broadcast.
- Streaming over variable Wi-Fi: If local wireless conditions are contributing to fluctuations, a wired connection may be worth trying. It cannot increase an ISP’s upload capacity or guarantee stability.
- High resolution is not sustainable: Step down resolution or frame rate, then retest rather than holding onto a higher-resolution setting that drops frames or loses stream health.
Restream’s bitrate guidance supplies the half-upload heuristic; its encoder troubleshooting guide advises reducing bitrate, resolution, or FPS when stream quality is poor.
