Owncast can receive a live feed from OBS or another RTMP encoder, but it is not itself a YouTube relay or a documented playlist scheduler. To run Gurbani continuously on YouTube, configure Owncast and YouTube as separate destinations, choose a continuous-playback source and recovery plan, and set audio and video parameters deliberately for each output.
How the setup fits together
Owncast is a self-hosted livestreaming server. An encoder sends it a feed using RTMP; YouTube Live has its own separate ingest and broadcast configuration. The reviewed Owncast guidance does not establish a native Owncast-to-YouTube relay. Treat the two outputs as separate setup decisions rather than assuming that a feed arriving at Owncast automatically appears on YouTube. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation and YouTube’s live-stream API documentation describe distinct parts of the workflow.
A 24/7 stream also needs a playback source that keeps supplying audio and video, an encoder process that stays connected, and a way to notice and recover from interruptions. YouTube’s API documentation describes a persistent-broadcast scenario, but that does not create a Gurbani playlist, guarantee uninterrupted output, or specify how to restart a failed encoder.
Install and secure Owncast
Choose where it will run
Owncast documents installation on self-managed Linux or macOS systems, container-based installation, and hosting-provider options. Its listed pre-installed provider choices include Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr. Compare hosting options by who maintains the server, recurring cost, available processing and bandwidth, and how you will recover after a network or encoder interruption; the cited documentation does not establish a minimum hardware specification or provide a cost benchmark. Change the initial credentials
- Install Owncast using the method appropriate to your host, then open its admin interface at
/admin. - Change the initial admin password and the broadcast stream key. They are separate credentials; the sample defaults are insecure.
- Keep the admin interface and stream key private. Owncast documents web port 8080 and RTMP port 1935 as defaults; configure the host firewall or security rules to expose only the ports you need. Owncast permits port changes and multiple stream keys, which can be separately assigned or rotated.

Connect an encoder to Owncast
- In OBS or another RTMP-capable encoder, choose a custom RTMP destination.
- Set the server address to your Owncast host using RTMP port
1935and the documented/live/path. Enter the Owncast broadcast key separately if the encoder provides a distinct stream-key field. - Start with a quality your sending machine, internet connection, and Owncast host can sustain. Owncast cautions that unnecessarily high incoming quality consumes server resources.
- Send a test feed and check that Owncast receives it before relying on the setup.

Set the audio and video parameters
Owncast input settings
For broad compatibility, Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds rather than leaving it on automatic. Its audio quality table gives these options:

Owncast says audio passes through unchanged by default and notes that music-focused streams may benefit from a higher audio quality. AAC at 192 kbps is a reasonable starting point for a music-focused Owncast feed, not a tested prescription for every encoder, recording, or server. YouTube Live output settings
Configure YouTube Live separately. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For a typical stereo Gurbani stream, its advanced audio guidance lists AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream to YouTube’s servers. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; the appropriate bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the current YouTube encoder settings table for the specific output you choose. Test with representative audio and visuals, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Do not treat Owncast’s music-oriented audio tiers and YouTube’s stereo figure as one shared requirement. They apply to encoder settings for different paths. If you encode separate outputs, configure each output deliberately. If an intermediate system relays one feed, verify whether it passes audio through or re-encodes it.

A continuous stream needs a source that advances through the recordings and visuals, plus an encoder that remains connected. The Owncast documentation cited here covers receiving a stream and configuring the server; it does not document a built-in playlist scheduler. YouTube’s persistent-broadcast API scenario likewise does not define playlist creation, playback looping, process supervision, encoder restarts, or guaranteed continuity.

Before scheduling a 24/7 broadcast, decide how the playback source will advance and what will happen if the source, encoder, host, or network fails. Arrange monitoring and a tested restart or recovery procedure appropriate to your chosen software and hosting environment. Do not assume that a continuous-broadcast setting alone loops media or repairs a failed feed. Test a representative run and verify what viewers see after an interruption.
Check rights for recordings and visuals
Clear the specific recording, performance, and accompanying visuals you intend to use. A devotional or traditional composition does not by itself establish that a particular recording or arrangement is free of rights restrictions. YouTube for Artists advises: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.” Read its guidance for music channels and confirm the rights for your actual material before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Owncast does not receive the encoder feed: check that the destination uses the correct Owncast host, RTMP port 1935,
/live/path, and current broadcast key. Confirm the required port is reachable through the host firewall. - The feed works locally but the server struggles: reduce incoming resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to what the host and sending connection can sustain; Owncast warns that unnecessarily high input quality uses server resources.
- YouTube does not show the expected stream: verify the YouTube broadcast and ingest are configured separately from Owncast, and confirm the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube destination. Check YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Audio quality differs between destinations: check whether the output is separately encoded or passed through unchanged. Compare the actual sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate against the intended settings for that destination.
- The stream stops advancing or reconnecting: inspect the playback source and encoder process as separate components. The cited platform guides do not provide a built-in Owncast playlist scheduler or a guaranteed recovery mechanism; use a tested monitoring and restart plan for your implementation.
- Credentials may have been exposed: rotate the Owncast stream key and protect the admin password; update the encoder with the replacement key.
