You can run Owncast continuously on Ubuntu as an RTMP ingest and self-hosted viewing server, but Owncast alone is not a documented YouTube relay. Its documented workflow accepts a stream from an encoder; YouTube separately requires an encoder configured with YouTube’s own stream URL and key. To broadcast an Owncast feed on YouTube, you need a separately verified bridge between those destinations. The steps below set up Owncast and explain what must be verified before calling the result a 24/7 YouTube source.
What Owncast does—and what it does not do by itself
Owncast accepts an RTMP broadcast and makes it available through its own self-hosted service. In the documented setup, broadcasting software sends video to Owncast’s /live endpoint. YouTube is a separate destination: an encoder sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room.
| Destination | What the encoder needs | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast | Your server address, RTMP port 1935, the /live path and an Owncast stream key |
A broadcast is ingested by Owncast and can be viewed through your Owncast service. |
| YouTube | YouTube’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room | An encoder sends a broadcast to YouTube. |
Those are two separately documented publishing paths; they do not, by themselves, show how to take a stream from Owncast and forward it to YouTube. Do not assume that installing Owncast, or entering a YouTube key somewhere in its settings, creates that relay. Before relying on an end-to-end setup, identify the specific process that reads or receives the Owncast feed and publishes it to YouTube, then verify its input and output formats, reconnect behavior, credential handling, and restart policy.
Prepare Ubuntu and the Owncast server
Choose a compatible release and install prerequisites
-
Choose the Owncast Linux release that matches the server’s CPU architecture. A mismatched build will not run correctly.

-
Ensure FFmpeg is available. The Owncast quick installer can download FFmpeg if it is missing; Owncast recommends inspecting a remote install script before running it and does not recommend running the installer as root. For a manual installation, install FFmpeg if needed, download the matching Owncast release, and follow that release’s installation instructions.
-
Plan access to the default ports: TCP 8080 for Owncast’s web interface and TCP 1935 for RTMP ingest. Allow the required traffic in both Ubuntu’s firewall and any cloud-provider firewall. Open only the ports needed for your deployment, and do not assume that changing a rule at one firewall changes the other.
Run Owncast under systemd
Starting ./owncast directly runs it in the foreground; that alone does not make it survive a reboot. Owncast’s Linux service example uses a dedicated owncast account, starts the service automatically, and restarts it after a process failure. Its example includes Restart=always and RestartSec=5. Do not run Owncast as root.
-
Create and configure the systemd service using Owncast’s Linux service instructions, with the service running as the dedicated
owncastaccount rather than root. Make sure its working directory and executable path match where you installed the release.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check whether it is running:
sudo systemctl status owncast. -
Follow its logs while connecting an encoder:
sudo journalctl -u owncast -f.
A restart policy can recover a crashed Owncast process. It does not guarantee that the server has power, network access, available storage, or an operational hosting provider.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Secure the admin login and stream key
Owncast documents weak default admin credentials and a default stream key. Change both promptly to strong, unique values before exposing the service. The admin password and stream key are separate settings: changing one does not replace the other. Keep both private; do not put a working key in a public example, paste it into a public issue, or include it in a command that will be saved in shell history.
- Use a dedicated non-root service account and a unique admin password.
- Replace the default stream key with a strong, unique key and update the encoder that publishes to Owncast.
- Restrict network access to the web interface where practical; keep only required ports open.
- If a credential is exposed, replace it and update every encoder or service that uses it.
Publish a test stream to Owncast
Once the service is running and reachable, configure compatible broadcasting software to publish to the Owncast RTMP endpoint. The documented endpoint pattern is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. Depending on the encoder, enter the server address and key in separate fields rather than appending the key to the address. Substitute your actual server address and secret; do not copy the example literally.

Watch the Owncast service logs and encoder status during the test. If the connection fails, check the server address, key, port 1935 reachability, and both host-level and provider-level firewall rules.
This test confirms the encoder-to-Owncast path only. It does not confirm that the feed reaches YouTube.
What a YouTube relay must do
For YouTube delivery, obtain the YouTube stream URL and key in Live Control Room and configure the actual YouTube-publishing encoder with those credentials. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Test video and audio similar to the planned broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

If you use a separate bridge between Owncast and YouTube, determine which component is the YouTube encoder and how it receives the Owncast feed. Verify both the incoming media path and outgoing YouTube destination, how it responds when either connection drops, and how that process starts again after a crash or reboot. Owncast’s systemd service does not automatically supervise a separate relay process.

In Owncast’s illustrative example, a 4,000 kbps stream with 25 viewers corresponds to 100 Mbps peak throughput and 90 GB of transfer over two hours. These are the documentation’s example figures, not a hosting guarantee or a universal server requirement. A day-long broadcast can consume substantially more transfer than a short test; estimate against the bitrate, expected concurrent viewers, and actual duration you plan to serve. Multiple output qualities affect the calculation. Owncast also notes that S3-compatible object storage can offload video bandwidth.
When choosing a server, compare sustained outbound bandwidth allowances, server location, port and firewall control, billing exposure, and who maintains the operating system. Owncast lists one-click deployment options from Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr; availability and terms can vary, so check the provider’s current offering directly.
Account for YouTube session and content rules
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what will happen to every stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so check the current Live Control Room behavior for your planned session and do not promise one permanent archive for a continuous broadcast.
For documentary footage, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every video, soundtrack, image, and other included material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content policies for your channel and content; a technically stable stream does not establish that the material is permitted or eligible under YouTube’s rules.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast web interface does not load | Service is stopped, address or port is wrong, or TCP 8080 is blocked. | Check systemctl status owncast, the server address, and host and provider firewall rules. |
| Encoder cannot connect to Owncast | Wrong RTMP endpoint or key, or TCP 1935 is unreachable. | Verify the /live endpoint and key format expected by the encoder; check both firewall layers and follow journalctl -u owncast -f. |
| Owncast works, but YouTube receives no broadcast | The encoder may only be publishing to Owncast; the separate YouTube-publishing path may be missing or misconfigured. | Identify the process that sends to YouTube and confirm that it has YouTube’s own stream URL and key and receives the intended media input. |
| Service does not return after a reboot | The process may have been launched only in a terminal, or the systemd unit may not be enabled or correctly configured. | Check the service unit, run sudo systemctl enable --now owncast, and inspect sudo systemctl status owncast. |
| Service repeatedly restarts or stops | Process failure, incorrect paths or permissions, or missing dependencies. | Review sudo journalctl -u owncast -f; confirm the executable path, working directory, service account permissions, and FFmpeg availability. |
| Playback becomes unstable as audience grows | Outbound bandwidth or provider capacity may be insufficient for the bitrate and viewer count. | Estimate peak throughput and transfer using the formulas above; compare the result with the host’s sustained network allowance. |
