If your goal is to keep a prerecorded playlist live on YouTube around the clock, start with a cloud service that explicitly supports playlist looping. StreamNeo is the #1 fit here: it runs uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Gyre is another documented cloud option. Owncast serves a different purpose: it is a self-hosted live video and chat server, not a managed YouTube playlist scheduler.
What an Owncast alternative needs to do
Owncast describes itself as a self-hosted live video and web chat server. Its documentation explains how broadcasting software sends an RTMP stream to an Owncast instance; the endpoint and stream key belong to the operator’s server. That makes Owncast a destination for a live feed, rather than a documented service for managing prerecorded playlists on YouTube. See the Owncast documentation and broadcasting setup.
A YouTube playlist channel has a different chain of work: store or select prerecorded videos, play them in sequence or on a loop, maintain an encoder connection to YouTube, and recover if that connection drops. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to connect with the YouTube server URL and stream key. Scheduling a YouTube event does not itself provide a running video source; the encoder still needs to connect and start when the scheduled time arrives. See YouTube’s encoder help.
Best Owncast alternatives for a 24/7 YouTube playlist
| Rank and option | Documented role | Fit for a hands-off 24/7 YouTube playlist | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 StreamNeo | Cloud service for uploading videos or building a playlist, adding a YouTube stream key and starting a continuously looping broadcast. | Strong match: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day. | Storage, number of slots, file and quality needs, billing period and current terms. |
| #2 Gyre | Cloud service that uploads and converts videos, arranges them into a looping playlist, and supports scheduled, continuous YouTube operation. | Strong documented match for cloud playlist looping. | Which tier includes playlist and scheduler features, simultaneous stream capacity, storage, destination support, current price and watermark. |
| #3 OBS or another local encoder | Software sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder, but generic encoder compatibility does not establish unattended playlist automation. | Possible if you configure the video source and keep the computer, software, power and network running. | Playlist-source setup, restart recovery, monitoring, hardware load, internet reliability and archive handling. |
| #4 AJA HELO Plus | YouTube says its PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | A hardware route to investigate; the cited YouTube source does not establish endless playlist looping. | Verify current looping behavior and scheduling, as well as price, setup and serviceability, with current manufacturer information. |
| #5 Owncast | Self-hosted live video and chat destination that accepts an RTMP feed from broadcasting software. | Not documented in the cited sources as a managed YouTube playlist-loop service. It is relevant if your intended destination is an Owncast server and you want self-hosted chat. | Server administration, stream source, capacity, bandwidth, quality conversion and whether viewers should watch on Owncast or YouTube. |

How to choose the right route
Choose a cloud playlist service for unattended YouTube operation
If the essential requirement is a prerecorded playlist that keeps running on YouTube without a home computer, compare StreamNeo and Gyre first. Both document cloud operation and looping. Their storage, plan limits and features differ, so match the current plan to your playlist size, quality and number of simultaneous streams.
Choose Owncast for a self-hosted destination and chat
Owncast is still a reasonable choice when you want to run your own live video destination and chat service. You will need to provide the live feed with broadcasting software or another source. The cited Owncast documentation does not describe it as a managed YouTube playlist scheduler, so do not assume that configuring an Owncast stream also handles continuous delivery to YouTube.

Choose a local encoder if you want control and accept maintenance
YouTube’s encoder list includes OBS, but that confirms encoder compatibility—not a ready-made, unattended playlist recipe. You are responsible for configuring playback, keeping the machine and connection available, monitoring failures and restarting the stream when needed. Build and test the playlist automation and recovery process before relying on it around the clock.
Investigate dedicated hardware for a computer-free setup
YouTube identifies the AJA HELO Plus and says PlayToStream can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That is narrower than confirmation of an endlessly looping playlist. Check the current manufacturer documentation for the exact loop behavior your channel requires before treating it as a full substitute for a cloud playlist service.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
Continuous transmission and replay preservation are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If viewers need a replay, arrange local recording or another archive process rather than relying on a continuous stream’s automatic archive. See YouTube’s archive help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Before you start a 24/7 channel
- Confirm the destination. A YouTube channel, an Owncast server and a cloud playlist service are different endpoints and workflows.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube’s encoder connection uses the server URL and stream key; treat the key as a credential and update the encoder if you replace it.
- Check rights for every video and audio track. Having a file does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Resolve copyright and licensing questions before putting material in a continuous public stream.
- Review YouTube policies separately from technical setup. A successful encoder connection does not guarantee that content is eligible for monetization or compliant with platform rules, including rules relevant to reused content.
- Decide how replays will be preserved. A 24/7 live stream may exceed YouTube’s stated archive window; make a separate recording plan if an archive matters.
Troubleshooting common 24/7 stream problems
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the encoder is using the correct YouTube server URL and the stream key for the intended channel and event. Confirm that the event is ready to receive an encoder and that the source is actually playing. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover connecting and starting an encoder.

The stream stops when the computer is turned off
A local encoder depends on the computer and its source continuing to run. If you need the feed to continue with the computer off, use a cloud playlist service that explicitly supports continuous operation instead of assuming YouTube scheduling supplies the video source.
The stream disconnects and does not resume
Check the internet connection, encoder state and playback source, then reconnect using the active event’s server URL and stream key. For an unattended channel, determine in advance how the chosen service handles a dropped YouTube connection; StreamNeo and Gyre describe cloud operation, and StreamNeo describes automatic recovery.
The live broadcast has no usable replay
Check the stream duration before assuming YouTube will archive it. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, according to YouTube. Use a separate recording or archive process if the replay must be kept.
