Owncast is open-source software; the recurring cost is mainly the VPS and its outbound bandwidth, with optional object-storage delivery adding a separate bill. A VPS provider’s advertised starting price is only a server-cost floor: what you actually need depends on stream bitrate, hours, concurrent viewers, encoding workload, and server region.
One scope distinction matters: Owncast is a self-hosted live-streaming and chat server, not a YouTube hosting product. This estimate covers running Owncast on a VPS. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, see the cloud option below.
What goes into the cost?
Owncast itself is open source, so the main recurring expense is the infrastructure needed to run it and deliver video to viewers. Owncast says there is no universal cost or requirement because workloads differ. Owncast’s requirements guide explains the factors to check.
- VPS compute: CPU and memory support the server and any video encoding. The appropriate size depends on what you ask it to encode.
- Outbound traffic: Direct delivery from the VPS uses bandwidth as viewers watch. Bitrate, viewing time, and concurrent audience determine the traffic total.
- Plan limits and region: Included transfer, sustained network capacity, and overage terms vary by provider, plan, and data-center location.
- Optional object storage: Owncast can use S3-compatible storage to serve video, shifting viewer-facing traffic away from the VPS. That adds storage and delivery charges; the available information does not establish that it is always cheaper. See Owncast’s object-storage documentation.
Your own internet connection is a separate consideration, not part of the VPS bill. Owncast recommends wired Ethernet for broadcaster reliability and upload capacity above the stream bitrate. Its guide recommends at least 1.5 times the streaming bitrate to allow for fluctuations and overhead; for a 5,000 kbps stream, it gives 7.5 Mbps as the target. That is broadcaster-to-server upload, not server-to-viewer traffic.

Current VPS price anchors
As listed on DigitalOcean’s pricing page in 2026, the following advertised prices illustrate possible server line items. They are provider prices, not a guarantee that a particular plan will handle your encoding workload or audience.

Check the current plan details before choosing: provider prices and terms can change. A plan’s monthly transfer allowance also does not, by itself, establish that it can sustain the required live throughput.

Estimate outbound traffic from your stream
Owncast’s estimate is: (bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB. Its published two-hour estimates are:

These are Owncast’s traffic estimates, not observed bills. Multiply an event estimate by the number of events per month, then compare the result with the selected plan’s included outbound transfer for its location. For example, four two-hour events at 4,000 kbps and 25 concurrent viewers work out to 360 GB (90 GB × 4) using Owncast’s estimate.

Check peak throughput separately
Monthly transfer is a volume measure; live delivery also needs enough capacity at peak audience. Owncast’s rule of thumb is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. It notes that many VPS providers offer 1 Gbps ports and estimates roughly 200 viewers at 5,000 kbps on such a port. Treat that as a guide, not a guarantee: account for the actual plan’s limits and network overhead.
Compare traffic allowances by server location
Do not assume one provider’s allowance applies in every region. Hetzner’s traffic documentation, accessed in 2026, lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX cloud plans. It lists 1–5 TB for US locations and 0.5–5 TB for Singapore, depending on the plan, and specifies overage charges for some products. Confirm the allowance and overage terms for the exact product and location you select on Hetzner’s traffic page.

Location affects more than the traffic allowance. Owncast notes that distance between the server and viewers can contribute to buffering. Compare the location with both your broadcaster and likely audience rather than choosing solely by the lowest advertised price.

Testing or a very small audience
A low advertised VPS starting price can help establish the server-cost floor. DigitalOcean’s $4/month shared-CPU starting price is one such anchor, but it does not demonstrate that the cheapest plan is sufficient for your chosen stream, encoding, or audience.

Light production with passthrough or one output
Compare a modest shared-CPU plan’s CPU, transfer allowance, and port capacity with your actual bitrate, monthly event hours, and concurrent viewers. Owncast says passthrough uses little CPU; outbound traffic still scales with what viewers watch.
Multiple qualities or heavier encoding
Budget for more CPU headroom and test the configuration you intend to run. Encoding more outputs or using more demanding compression increases the work. DigitalOcean’s $42/month CPU-Optimized starting price is a price reference, not a minimum imposed by Owncast.
Growing audience or limited VPS transfer
Compare direct VPS delivery with a design that uses S3-compatible object storage. Include that provider’s storage and delivery charges in the total: shifting viewer delivery away from the VPS does not make it free, and it is not established that the alternative will always cost less.
Use this checklist before you calculate the monthly total
- Choose a bitrate and estimate the hours streamed each month.
- Estimate concurrent viewers, then calculate event traffic and peak Mbps with Owncast’s formulas.
- Decide whether Owncast will pass through the stream or encode one or more output qualities; encoding needs affect CPU.
- Compare candidate plans’ CPU type, memory, included outbound transfer, sustained port capacity, and overage rate.
- Check the actual traffic allowance for the selected provider location, not just a headline figure for another region.
- Factor in server-to-viewer distance when weighing locations.
- If considering object storage, add its storage and delivery charges as a separate line item.
- Keep broadcaster-side internet requirements separate from the VPS invoice; allow upload headroom above the stream bitrate.
