If YouTube says a third-party encoder failed to start or rejected its key, copy the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update the encoder. If the message is about an SSL certificate, a timeout, or “Waiting for data,” check the RTMPS destination and stream status instead—the key may not be the problem. Cesbo Astra can help diagnose its own stream processing, but its status and logs do not refresh YouTube credentials.
Identify where the failure occurs
“Astra” can refer to different setups. This guide covers Cesbo Astra where it is involved in a YouTube workflow, but it does not assume Astra is always the encoder that publishes to YouTube. Establish whether Astra is an upstream source or relay, or whether a separate encoder sends the final stream to YouTube. The exact controls depend on the product and deployment; the available Cesbo documentation does not give a version-specific YouTube publishing recipe.
Then match the message to the system showing it:
- “Error when starting your encoder” or a rejected key: check the key in the publishing encoder.
- “Invalid SSL certificate” or “Connection timed out”: investigate the destination URL, protocol, port, and encoder support for RTMPS.
- “Waiting for data” or “Starting soon” in YouTube Live Control Room: YouTube has not received the expected stream data, or the broadcast has not moved into the expected state. Check the ingest path and broadcast setup rather than repeatedly changing the key.
- An error or stopped stream in Astra: investigate Astra’s own source, processing, and logs separately from YouTube’s key.

Fix a rejected or outdated stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Open the stream setup and copy the current stream key.
- In the software that actually publishes to YouTube, replace the saved key with the copied key. If Astra is only an upstream source, enter it in the downstream publishing encoder, not automatically in Astra.
- Save the change and try starting the encoder again. Check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming stream status.
YouTube recommends retrieving the current key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder for a third-party encoder start error. Treat the key like a password: do not post it in screenshots, logs, public forums, or support messages. If the encoder signs in to YouTube through an account integration and has no manual key field, YouTube’s guidance is to contact that software’s support team. Check the ingest URL and RTMPS separately
A valid key cannot correct a wrong destination or a transport connection failure. Compare the encoder’s complete server URL with the server information shown in Live Control Room. If the setup calls for RTMPS, use the RTMPS address; RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable labels for the same configured destination.
Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Its guidance requires the rtmps protocol and a valid YouTube endpoint and path; the documented RTMPS connection uses port 443. [YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS] [Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS]

- Invalid SSL certificate: recheck the full RTMPS server URL against Live Control Room. If the URL is otherwise correct, YouTube advises trying port 443.
- Connection timed out: verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. A timeout is a connection or transport symptom, not proof that the key is invalid.
- URL or protocol mismatch: correct the server address and protocol in the publishing encoder, then retry.

Diagnose Cesbo Astra without confusing it with YouTube
If Cesbo Astra is part of the workflow, use its own monitoring as a separate diagnostic layer. Cesbo’s Streams API documentation describes runtime stream status and the ability to restart an enabled stream. Its log documentation describes error, warning, informational, and debug messages. These can help establish whether an Astra-configured stream is running and where Astra reports a failure; they do not show that YouTube accepted a key or replace the key in the publishing encoder. - Check Astra’s stream status and determine whether the configured stream is running.
- Review Astra logs for errors or warnings around the time the stream stopped or failed.
- If Astra reports a failure, troubleshoot that stream’s source or processing in Astra.
- If Astra appears healthy but YouTube reports a rejected key, return to the publishing encoder’s key and destination settings.
A healthy Astra status alongside a YouTube key rejection points toward the publishing credentials or configuration, but this is a diagnostic inference from the systems’ separate roles—not a special Astra error code or an Astra-specific YouTube diagnosis.
If YouTube accepts the key but still waits for data
Once the key is accepted, stop treating every delay as a key error. Check that the publishing encoder is sending to the correct ingest URL, that its connection is active, and that YouTube Live Control Room reports incoming data and stream health. Also check that the incoming stream is associated with the intended broadcast.
