Use GStreamer’s textoverlay element for ticker text and either cairooverlay or video overlay-composition rectangles for a logo. A fixed ticker can be set directly as a property; changing text needs timestamped text buffers on the element’s text pad. Then configure the encoder with the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. The exact pipeline depends on your source, installed plugins, formats, encoder and transport, so there is no reliable universal launch command for this setup.
Choose how the ticker text will work
Fixed ticker wording
For text that stays the same, set textoverlay’s text property. GStreamer documents this illustrative example: textoverlay text="Room A" valignment=top halignment=left font-desc="Sans, 72". It places text at the top left; the font size and position are examples, not production recommendations. Adjust alignment, font and placement for your output dimensions and safe area. Text wrapping is enabled by default. See the GStreamer textoverlay documentation.
Changing ticker wording
If the ticker changes on a schedule or in response to incoming data, feed text buffers to textoverlay’s text sink pad. The element matches text to video using buffer timestamps. Your application or another component must produce the updated text and timestamps: textoverlay does not provide a news feed or scheduling system by itself. See the same textoverlay documentation for the text-pad behavior.
Choose a logo rendering path
| Approach | How it works | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
cairooverlay |
Your application draws the logo using Cairo. The draw signal provides a Cairo context and the current buffer’s timestamp and duration; caps-changed can provide frame dimensions. |
Useful when application code should control drawing and placement. Check format negotiation around the element; the documented pad formats constrain compatible raw-video paths. See the GStreamer cairooverlay documentation. |
| Video overlay composition | Represent the logo as one or more overlay rectangles. The composition can be blended into raw video or carried as metadata for a capable sink to render on a non-raw surface. | Suitable when your application already supplies overlay pixels, but depends on downstream blending or rendering support. See the GStreamer video overlay-composition documentation. |
Neither path is universally preferable. Decide based on who provides the logo pixels, how much drawing control your application needs, the negotiated formats and whether downstream elements can render or blend the overlay.

Build and verify the pipeline for your system
A complete launch line cannot be specified from the title alone. The source video, operating system, GStreamer build and installed plugins, chosen codecs, software or hardware encoder, muxing and transport all affect the pipeline. Identify those pieces before assembling it, and check that the selected elements can negotiate compatible caps. Consult the GStreamer documentation index for framework and plugin references.
- Choose the source video and determine its format, resolution and frame rate.
- Select the logo method: application drawing with
cairooverlay, or overlay-composition rectangles supported by the downstream path. - Set the ticker as a fixed
textoverlayproperty, or arrange for timestamped text buffers if its content changes. - Choose a video encoder, codec and muxing path available in your GStreamer installation. Confirm format negotiation through the overlay and encoder.
- Match output resolution, frame rate and bitrate to the source and the upload connection. Test the configured output in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
Configure YouTube Live and encoder settings
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube says initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Keep the stream key private. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Use RTMPS for secure transport where your encoder path supports it. YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate together, within the capacity of your upload connection. YouTube transcodes live input into output formats for different devices and networks. Use the current YouTube live encoder settings for its format-specific guidance.
- Start the encoder, then check stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health; do not assume a successful local pipeline means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Plan for 24/7 operation and archives
A 24/7 stream needs a source and encoder that remain available, plus separate provisions for process supervision, source recovery, network recovery and monitoring. The cited YouTube encoder guidance does not promise uninterrupted service or define a complete continuous-operation design, so treat those as deployment requirements rather than built-in guarantees.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive handling for a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. If you need an archive, plan segmentation or another recording workflow and verify YouTube’s current behavior before depending on a particular result. See YouTube’s encoder setup page.
Troubleshooting
- The logo or text does not appear: check that the overlay is in the active video path, that the selected elements negotiate supported formats and that the output is the path you are sending to the encoder.
- The ticker text stays fixed: a fixed
textproperty does not update itself. For changing copy, supply new text buffers on the text pad with timestamps that align with the video. - Changing text appears at the wrong time: inspect the text and video buffer timestamps.
textoverlaymatches the two by timestamp. - The logo is missing with overlay composition: confirm that the downstream path can blend the rectangles into raw video or that the sink supports rendering the composition metadata.
- The pipeline fails during caps negotiation: inspect formats supported by the elements around
cairooverlayor the composition path, then adjust the pipeline so adjacent elements agree on compatible formats. - YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder, check the selected transport and encoder settings, and inspect Live Control Room stream health. Do not expose or share the key.
- The first stream cannot go live: first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. Check Live Control Room after enablement rather than assuming a local encoder error.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without maintaining a GStreamer machine at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free StreamNeo day.
