“Could not write header” is a generic FFmpeg output-initialization error, not a diagnosis. Find the first specific muxer, codec, stream-mapping, or network error above that final line; it usually provides the useful clue. Without your command and complete log, the cause cannot be identified reliably.
What the error means—and what it does not
FFmpeg writes an output header when it initializes a destination file or stream. If initialization fails, it may end with a message such as “Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?).” That final line is broad: it does not establish that YouTube is down or identify which setting is wrong.
A 2019 FFmpeg-user report illustrates the pattern: an FLV tag rejected an incompatible output codec before the header failure appeared. That is an example of how a more specific error can precede the generic one, not evidence that your command has the same problem. FFmpeg-user archive example
Diagnose the first specific error
- Capture the complete log. Save the command and all FFmpeg output from startup through the failure. Read upward from “Could not write header” and locate the first detailed error. Note which output stream, codec, muxer, or network operation it names.
- Check the output muxer and mapped streams. Confirm that the selected output container supports the codecs and stream types you are sending. Inspect any
-mapoptions; do not assume every input stream can be copied unchanged into the output. FFmpeg’s format documentation describes muxers and includes an RTMP example that uses-f fifo -fifo_format flvwhile explicitly mapping video and audio. It is an illustration, not a command to paste without adapting it to your input and build. FFmpeg formats and protocols documentation - Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. These are ingest settings to check, not a diagnosis of a header error. YouTube live encoder settings
- Verify the destination credentials and protocol. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the ingest URL and stream key associated with the stream. Make sure the encoder supports the protocol you selected. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if you choose it. - Review YouTube’s live dashboard. Check stream health and any error feedback there. This can help distinguish a connection or ingest problem from a local output-initialization failure.
Use the bitrate row that matches your stream
YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These examples are for H.264 in YouTube’s current English-US live encoder table, accessed in 2026; they are published ingest guidance, not proof of what caused an FFmpeg error.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For another codec, resolution, or frame rate, consult the corresponding row rather than extrapolating from these examples. YouTube also lists 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 48 kHz, 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio in its advanced settings; it says AAC is supported for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.

- The exact FFmpeg command, with the stream key replaced by
[REDACTED]. - The full, unabridged FFmpeg log from startup through the first failure.
- Your FFmpeg version and build configuration.
- Input stream metadata, including stream types and codecs.
- Whether the output goes directly to RTMP/RTMPS or passes through tee, FIFO, or another intermediate.
Do not post a live stream key publicly. The error alone is not enough to select a confirmed fix, and a hardware purchase is not a substitute for checking the actual command and log.

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube Live stream rather than diagnose an FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
