How to Show the Current Song or Video Title in an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Render a changing song or video title into your FFmpeg stream with drawtext, a UTF-8 text file and a separate title-updating helper.

Use FFmpeg’s drawtext video filter to put the current song or video title directly into the stream image. For titles that change during playback, have FFmpeg read a UTF-8 text file and reload it periodically; a separate helper must update that file with the current title. This is different from changing YouTube’s broadcast title or setting FFmpeg output metadata, neither of which draws text into the picture.

Choose the kind of title viewers should see

Approach What it changes What it requires
FFmpeg drawtext overlay Composites text into the video frames, so it appears in the stream image. A FFmpeg build with the filter and a process that supplies the current title.
YouTube broadcast title Changes the title field associated with the broadcast or video resource; it is platform metadata, not text in the image. Updating the broadcast metadata, subject to API authorization and update restrictions.
FFmpeg -metadata title=... Sets output metadata; it does not itself render visible text over the video. An output metadata option.

Google distinguishes the liveStream, which carries transmitted audio and video, from the liveBroadcast, which represents the event or video. The broadcast resource includes a snippet.title field. Those fields are separate from the pixels FFmpeg encodes. See YouTube Live Streams and YouTube Live Broadcasts.

Check that your FFmpeg build supports drawtext

Before building the stream command, confirm that the installed FFmpeg includes drawtext. The filter depends on libfreetype; font fallback and text shaping features may depend on additional optional libraries. A command using the filter will fail if it is absent. Build options differ, so check the documentation for your FFmpeg version and the capabilities of your installed binary. FFmpeg documents the filter and its dependencies at drawtext.

Set up a dynamic title overlay

  1. Choose a source for the title. Decide which process knows what is currently playing: for example, your playlist manager, media player, or an external feed. FFmpeg’s drawing filter displays supplied text; it does not automatically discover the currently playing song or video. There is no single title-detection method established for every input.
  2. Create a UTF-8 text file. Have the title source write the current title to a file, such as current-title.txt. Keep it in a location the FFmpeg process can read. Using a file avoids much of the shell and filtergraph escaping needed when embedding changing text directly in a command.
  3. Add drawtext to the video filter graph. The essential shape is drawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:textfile=/path/to/current-title.txt:reload=30. Replace the font and text-file paths with paths valid on your system. Choose a readable font, size, color and screen position; an optional background box can improve contrast. This illustrates the filter options, not a complete tested command for a particular operating system, input or output.
  4. Pick a reload interval. The reload value is a frame interval, not a number of seconds. At 30 frames per second, for example, reload=30 checks once per 30 frames—about once per second if the stream is actually running at that frame rate. A shorter interval can make a title change appear sooner but checks the file more frequently. Select an interval suited to your stream’s frame rate and how quickly the title needs to change.
  5. Update the file atomically. When the title changes, write the new UTF-8 text to a temporary file in the same location, then rename or replace the active file. Do not truncate and rewrite the file that FFmpeg is reading: it could read a partially written title. FFmpeg’s filter documentation specifically cautions that atomic updates reduce the risk of partial reads or failures.
  6. Test the whole chain before going live. Confirm that the title source writes the expected text, that FFmpeg can read the file and font, and that the title changes appear in the video at the expected interval. Check the exact filter syntax against your installed FFmpeg version and build.

Make the title readable and robust

  • Allow room in the frame. Position the overlay where it does not cover essential documentary footage, subtitles or other on-screen information.
  • Use contrast. A background box or outline can help text remain legible over changing footage. Verify it against both dark and bright scenes.
  • Handle title text safely. Keep the file encoded as UTF-8, particularly for accented letters and non-Latin scripts. If you instead place text directly in the filter expression, account for shell and filtergraph escaping; the file-backed method is generally less cumbersome.
  • Define what happens when a title is unavailable. The title-source helper should decide whether to leave the last title, write a neutral label, or clear the text. FFmpeg cannot infer the right fallback for your playlist or media source.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg reports that drawtext is unavailable or unrecognized. The installed build lacks the filter, often because it was compiled without libfreetype. Use a build with the required support and verify its filter documentation and configuration.
The stream starts but no title appears. The file path, font path, filter placement or text content may be wrong. Check that FFmpeg can read both files, that the title file contains text, and that the filter is applied to the video stream.
The old title remains after a track changes. The helper did not update the file, the replacement was not visible at the configured reload interval, or the helper is not receiving current-title information. Check the title source and its output file, use an atomic replacement, and confirm the reload interval is measured in frames.
Text is garbled, clipped or hard to read. Encoding, font coverage, size, position or contrast may be unsuitable. Use UTF-8, a font that supports the characters, and adjust placement and styling against the actual footage.
Text contains unexpected punctuation or the filter fails when a title changes. Special characters can be interpreted by the shell or filtergraph when embedded directly. Prefer textfile; if embedding text, escape it for both the shell and FFmpeg filter syntax.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than maintain a local FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
