Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to read a playlist and -stream_loop -1 to repeat it indefinitely. Pace the file input with -re, then send the encoded output to the ingestion URL and stream name shown in YouTube Studio. The command below is a starting point: verify the bitrate and keyframe interval for your chosen resolution and frame rate, and test the full playlist before broadcasting.
Build and loop a playlist with FFmpeg
This approach encodes the playlist as H.264 video and AAC audio in an FLV container for RTMP-style ingest. The example uses the concat demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding when the source files are compatible. It is illustrative, not a tested command; check your installed FFmpeg build and test before going live.
1. Create the playlist file
Save a text file named playlist.txt in the directory containing the clips:
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
Use one file line per clip, in playback order. Relative paths within the working directory are a good starting point. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1; avoid disabling that safeguard casually, because safe=0 permits any filename. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Get the YouTube ingest values
In YouTube Studio, open the live stream’s settings and obtain its ingestion URL and stream name. YouTube’s API describes these as the ingestion address and streamName; depending on the encoder interface, the stream name may be supplied separately or appended to the URL. Use the form required by your setup. Treat the stream name like a credential: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or shell history. See Google’s LiveStreams API documentation.
3. Start the stream
Set the two shell variables to the values for your YouTube live stream, then run:

export YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL='YOUR_INGEST_URL'
export YOUTUBE_STREAM_NAME='YOUR_STREAM_NAME'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_NAME"
-stream_loop -1 requests indefinite input looping; -re reads file input at its native rate, which is commonly used to pace a live output. Input options belong before the corresponding -i. Confirm option behavior with ffmpeg -h for your installed version. If YouTube or your encoder expects the stream name separately, adjust the output form rather than appending it.
Set output quality and keyframes for YouTube
The example’s -g 60 makes a 60-frame GOP—two seconds only when output is 30 fps. For other frame rates, choose a GOP that produces a keyframe about every two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR and supports RTMP/RTMPS; listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, while listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3. The example uses H.264/AAC in FLV for an RTMP-style output. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing values.

The sample video rate of 4,500 kbit/s is not a universal YouTube recommendation. For example, YouTube’s current guidance lists these recommendations:
| Output | H.264 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations, not measured results. Select the applicable entry from YouTube’s full current table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the output bitrate. The cited guidance page does not show a publication year, so verify its values when configuring a stream.

Check whether the clips can be concatenated directly
The concat demuxer is appropriate when the files’ streams are compatible enough to be read in sequence without re-encoding. Check that clips have consistent stream layouts, dimensions, frame rates, and codecs; exact compatibility depends on the media and FFmpeg build, so test transitions. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; that route lets you normalize inputs before they are joined. See the FFmpeg FAQ on joining video files.
If a transition produces a pause, freeze, audio discontinuity, or timestamp error, inspect the source files and consider normalizing them with a filter-based workflow instead of forcing a direct concat. Documentation does not establish an uninterrupted-playback guarantee for every playlist.

Preflight and monitor the live output
- Check that every playlist path resolves and that the clips play in the intended order.
- Run a short test with representative motion and audio. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Confirm the live control room receives data at the expected resolution and frame rate. YouTube can detect these automatically unless a custom stream key is set for manual resolution.
- Watch stream health and YouTube’s messages while the test and broadcast run. The LiveStreams API exposes health status and configuration issues for API clients.
- Protect the stream name and stop the FFmpeg process cleanly when you intend to end the broadcast; looping the input does not itself manage YouTube’s live event settings.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist entry | Incorrect working directory, misspelled path, or a path disallowed by the concat demuxer’s safe-path default. | Check each filename and use safe relative paths. Do not switch to safe=0 unless you understand the path implications. |
| YouTube receives no data | Ingest URL or stream name is wrong, missing, or supplied in the wrong form. | Compare the output target with the values and format in YouTube Studio and the encoder interface. |
| Stream health reports configuration or quality issues | Output settings do not match the selected YouTube configuration, or the network cannot sustain the bitrate. | Review YouTube’s messages, codec and resolution settings, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity. |
| Video or audio breaks at a clip boundary | Source clips may have incompatible stream layouts, timestamps, codecs, frame rates, or dimensions. | Test each transition; normalize and re-encode with a concat-filter workflow if direct demuxer concatenation is unsuitable. |
| Keyframes arrive too far apart | The GOP size does not correspond to the intended interval at the chosen frame rate. | Set the GOP based on output frames per second; target two seconds and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second limit. |
