Windows can reopen Streamlabs Desktop when you sign in, but that does not mean it will resume your previous live broadcast. Set Windows update restarts for a convenient time, enable Streamlabs to launch at sign-in, and check the stream manually after Windows restarts.
Before an update: avoid restarting during a stream
Windows may need to restart to finish installing an update. To reduce the chance that this interrupts a broadcast, plan the restart outside your streaming hours.
- Set active hours: Open Windows Settings and go to Windows Update. Set active hours to cover the times you normally use the computer, so Windows can better avoid automatic restarts during that period.
- Schedule a restart: When Windows Update indicates that a restart is required, use its restart-scheduling option to choose a convenient time rather than restarting in the middle of a stream.
Windows Update controls the restart timing; it does not preserve a Streamlabs live session across that restart. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ for its guidance on restarts and active hours.
Make Streamlabs Desktop open after you sign in
Enable Streamlabs Desktop as a startup app. This starts the program at sign-in; it is not a setting that automatically restores a live broadcast.

- In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find Streamlabs Desktop and turn it on if it is listed.
- Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps and enable Streamlabs Desktop there if it appears.
- If Streamlabs is not listed, Microsoft documents adding an app shortcut through the Windows Startup folder. Follow its instructions for locating the app shortcut and placing it in that folder.

After Windows restarts: check the broadcast yourself
Once you have signed in and Streamlabs Desktop opens, confirm that it is ready before relying on the channel being live. Windows startup guidance covers launching an app at sign-in; it does not document automatic restoration of a Streamlabs live session.

- Confirm the intended scene is selected and the expected video sources are visible.
- Check microphone, desktop audio, and other audio sources using Streamlabs’ meters.
- Confirm the correct streaming destination and account are selected.
- Review the stream settings and make sure the intended stream key is configured. Treat a stream key as a password: do not show or share it.
- Start the broadcast if needed, then verify the live status in Streamlabs and in the destination’s live dashboard.
If Streamlabs Desktop will not launch or crashes
Streamlabs’ crash guide recommends working through common Windows and application causes. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
- Update Windows and graphics drivers. Install available Windows updates and current drivers for your graphics hardware, then restart and try Streamlabs again.
- Repair Visual C++ redistributables. Use Streamlabs’ documented installer or repair steps for the required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime components.
- Try administrator access. Right-click the Streamlabs Desktop installer or application and choose Run as administrator, then follow the guide’s instructions.
- Check security software. Make sure your firewall or antivirus is not blocking Streamlabs Desktop. Only allow the application if you trust the installation and understand the security implications.
- Reinstall if needed. If the earlier checks do not resolve the crash, follow Streamlabs’ reinstall instructions. Save any configuration you need before removing or resetting application data.

If Streamlabs keeps looking like a fresh install
Streamlabs says a recurring first-launch experience can happen when background processes did not close properly. Before resetting the app, close Streamlabs and check for leftover processes:
- Close Streamlabs Desktop.
- Open Task Manager and look for lingering Streamlabs, Electron, OBS, or crash-handler processes.
- End only the related processes that remain after closing the app, then reopen Streamlabs Desktop.

Use Clear Cache and Restart only as a last resort
Streamlabs says Clear Cache and Restart wipes user data and starts the application clean. It is not a routine restart fix. Preserve any settings or configuration you may need, and try the less destructive checks above first. Streamlabs describes the reset in its Getting Started with Streamlabs Desktop guidance.
