Choose OBS Studio if you want a graphical setup, scenes, or straightforward playlist controls; choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable configuring and supervising a command-line process. Both can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live in a loop. Neither choice is proven to be inherently more reliable, so a nonstop stream also needs testing, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?
The main difference is how you set up and manage playback. OBS provides a graphical interface for sources and scenes. FFmpeg lets an operator define playback and output in a command. There is no controlled comparison establishing that one has better uptime or generally uses less CPU.
| What matters | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Graphical scenes and source controls. | Command-line arguments and process configuration. |
| Loop one file | Media Source has a Loop option. | A cited third-party guide uses -stream_loop -1 with realtime input pacing. |
| Loop a playlist | VLC Video source supports playlists, looping, and shuffle; VLC must be installed. | Can be scripted, but playlist setup depends on the command and is not covered in the cited guide excerpt. |
| Likely fit | Creators who want scene composition and visual source management. | Operators comfortable with command construction, automation, and supervision. |
| Comparative uptime evidence | No controlled comparative uptime result established. | No controlled comparative uptime result established. |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation is dated 2022-01-11, so interface details may differ in later releases: OBS Media Sources. FFmpeg’s loop example is from a third-party guide, updated 2026-07-13, not an official YouTube recipe or a verified promise of seamless playback: Streamloop’s FFmpeg guide.
What you need before going live
- A prerecorded video you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder computer and a reliable network connection for a local setup.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio.
- The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as the credential that directs the feed to the right stream; keep it private and reset it if exposed.
- A plan to test and monitor the stream, including someone or something able to notice a failure and act on it.
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations rather than carrying settings forward from an old tutorial: YouTube Live encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its setup instructions explain where to retrieve the stream URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

How to loop a prerecorded video with OBS
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then open Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it in a command, screenshot, or public post.
- Add a single file. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the video, and enable Loop. Confirm the file plays in the OBS preview and that its audio is routed as intended.
- Build a playlist if needed. Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist and loop or shuffle options. Install VLC first; 64-bit OBS needs a 64-bit VLC installation.
- Configure the YouTube output. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. Select an available server/ingest option, preferably RTMPS where supported, and set output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format to YouTube’s current guidance.
- Test before relying on it. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and watch representative motion and audio. Verify the loop behaves as expected at the file boundary before leaving it unattended.
YouTube’s official guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult the live table rather than guessing or applying one value to every stream.
How to loop a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a good fit when you want a compact command-line process and can manage its configuration and supervision. The example pattern below illustrates the loop and realtime pacing described in a third-party guide; it is not an official YouTube command or a tested guarantee of gapless playback. Replace the placeholders with the actual input path and the RTMP(S) ingest URL plus stream key from Live Control Room, and adapt encoding settings to your media and YouTube’s live recommendations.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -c:v copy -c:a aac -f flv "rtmp://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This example copies the video stream and re-encodes audio as AAC, as in the cited guide’s workflow. Copying video avoids a video re-encode only when the source format, codec, resolution, frame rate, and other stream properties are accepted by YouTube and suitable for the output. If not, configure a compatible video encode and its bitrate, keyframe interval, and frame rate explicitly. Use an RTMPS endpoint where supported; the exact endpoint and required settings should come from YouTube Live Control Room and current help.
- Prepare the input. Check that the file decodes correctly and that its video and audio formats suit the intended output. Do not assume every prerecorded file can be copied unchanged to a live ingest.
- Build the command. Use
-stream_loop -1to repeat the input and-reto pace file reading in realtime, then set the output URL to the stream endpoint and key. Protect the key: shell history, process listings, or logs may expose command-line credentials depending on the environment. - Start a test stream. Confirm FFmpeg is still running, YouTube receives the feed, preview and stream health are acceptable, and audio and video continue across a loop boundary.
- Supervise the process. Plan how to detect a stopped process, network interruption, or YouTube ingest drop and how to restart or reconnect it. A loop flag alone is not a process supervisor or a recovery guarantee.
The cited FFmpeg guide describes a particular implementation, not an official YouTube recipe; its note that an on-the-fly re-encode can occupy a CPU core is specific to that configuration and should not be treated as a general comparison between OBS and FFmpeg. No general CPU or uptime benchmark is established.

Settings and YouTube limits that matter
Match output to the source and current ingest guidance
Set resolution and frame rate deliberately, then choose a codec and bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendation for that combination. A higher output setting cannot add detail absent from the source, and an unsuitable copy-through stream may be rejected or produce poor playback. YouTube’s recommendations can change; check its live encoder settings before publishing.
Protect the stream key
The stream key authorizes an encoder feed for a specific YouTube stream. Store it as a credential, avoid exposing it in shared scripts or screenshots, and reset it in YouTube if compromised. The YouTube encoder setup guide describes obtaining the stream URL and key.

Plan around testing, monitoring, and archives
YouTube recommends testing, checking preview and stream health, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Its encoder tips also discuss testing failover: YouTube live streaming tips. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s setup guidance. That page does not promise a complete archive for a single stream that runs beyond 12 hours, so do not plan on an indefinite broadcast producing one complete recording.
Rights and monetization are separate from encoder choice
OBS and FFmpeg only transmit the feed; using either does not establish that a particular prerecorded program is permitted or monetizable. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video and audio element, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel monetization rules for your circumstances. No encoder guarantees a policy outcome.

Troubleshooting a nonstop stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Wrong stream URL or key, an inactive stream setup, or a connection/ingest issue. | Copy the URL and key again from the correct Live Control Room stream, verify the encoder output target, and inspect YouTube’s stream health. |
| OBS’s VLC playlist source is unavailable | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; with 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and recheck the source. |
| FFmpeg exits or stops sending | Input decode, output configuration, network, or ingest failure. | Inspect FFmpeg’s output for the error, confirm the input remains readable and the endpoint/key are correct, and test a restart/reconnect procedure rather than assuming the loop will recover it. |
| Video is rejected or quality is poor | Incompatible copied-through media or mismatched output settings. | Check codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance; re-encode when the source is not appropriate to copy unchanged. |
| Unexpected silence or poor audio | Incorrect source routing, an unsupported audio stream, or audio encode settings. | Monitor the live preview with sound and inspect audio format and routing using representative material before launch. |
| The stream is live but nobody notices a failure | No alerting or operator coverage. | Set an explicit monitoring and escalation plan; process choice by itself does not provide a documented uptime guarantee. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can either encoder guarantee uninterrupted streaming?
No. The encoder choice alone is not a documented uptime or recovery guarantee; a nonstop setup needs monitoring and a response plan.
Does YouTube automatically archive a 24/7 stream in full?
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but it does not promise a complete archive for a single stream that runs longer.
