You can use VLC to play podcast episodes in sequence and loop the playlist, but the available official documentation does not establish that every VLC version can reliably send that output directly to YouTube Live. Build and test the playlist first, then confirm your VLC build supports YouTube’s ingest connection—or use a compatible encoder that accepts VLC’s output—before scheduling a public broadcast.
What you need before streaming
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and is operated by someone at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- VLC installed on the computer that will play the episodes, plus the podcast media files or supported sources.
- Permission to livestream every episode and any embedded music, clips, artwork, or other material. Downloading or owning a copy does not by itself grant rebroadcast rights.
- A reliable upload connection with spare capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips.
Keep the computer, VLC, and any separate encoder running throughout a do-it-yourself broadcast. This workflow does not promise uninterrupted service; test the full chain before announcing a public event.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create an encoder stream or schedule one for later. Scheduling gives you a watch page to share in advance.
- Set the event’s privacy and audience details deliberately. Review YouTube’s current options in Studio rather than assuming a setting from another event will carry over.
- In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. You will enter these in the encoder in a later step; do not expose the key in a screenshot or public post.
YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe connecting an encoder with the stream URL and key, then starting the encoder and checking the preview. For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
Build and loop the episode playlist in VLC
- Open VLC and add the episode files or supported media sources to its playlist.
- Arrange them in the intended broadcast order. Check that each episode’s video and audio play correctly, including transitions between files.
- Enable the playlist-wide repeat or loop control. The intended behavior is to return to the first episode after the last one finishes.
- Do not choose repeat-current-item if you want the whole lineup to cycle; that setting repeats one episode instead of advancing through the playlist.
- Play through the playlist and confirm that it advances and loops as intended before connecting it to a public event.
VLC’s exact controls can differ by version and platform. VideoLAN project correspondence distinguishes repeating one item from repeating all items, but VideoLAN’s current documentation landing page cautions that its online documentation is incomplete or out of date. Verify the labels and behavior in your installed build.

Choose how VLC reaches YouTube
Direct VLC stream output
VLC may expose stream-output options in your installed build, but the official material available here does not demonstrate a current, reliable, multi-episode VLC-to-YouTube RTMP(S) workflow. Before relying on direct output, confirm that your VLC version and platform can send the required audio and video stream to YouTube’s ingest destination, set encoding parameters, and maintain the connection. Do not schedule a public event on the assumption that VLC’s playlist playback automatically means its output is compatible with YouTube Live.
VLC playback with a separate encoder
If direct VLC output is unavailable or unsuitable, use an encoder that you have confirmed can accept VLC’s playback output and connect to YouTube. This adds setup and another running component, but lets you use an encoder’s documented YouTube connection and settings. Test how it captures both picture and sound, and how it behaves at episode transitions, before going live.

Connect the encoder and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event.
- In the encoder, enter the URL in its server or destination field and the key in its stream-key field. Field names vary by encoder.
- Choose RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection; RTMP is an alternative when the encoder does not support RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not paste it into public examples, screenshots, or shared documents. If it is compromised, the channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start the encoder. When the preview appears in Live Control Room, check the video and audio, then click Go live for a scheduled event.
Set and verify the stream settings
There is no one bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder. Match the encoder to YouTube’s current recommended live encoder settings and bitrate table, and use values the installed encoder actually supports.
| Setting | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; availability depends on the encoder and configuration. |
| Frame rate | YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Select a frame rate appropriate to the source and encoder. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Bitrate mode | Use CBR (constant bitrate) as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance, with a bitrate appropriate to the chosen output and its current table. |
| Audio | YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3. Confirm the selected encoder sends the podcast audio and that levels are clear. |
| Transport | Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it; it encrypts the connection. |
Run a representative test with both audio and visuals, including a transition between episodes and a playlist loop if practical. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify the watch page from a viewer’s perspective. Leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends rather than sizing the connection exactly to the stream’s bitrate.

End the broadcast and plan for the archive
When finished, end the scheduled stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output following YouTube’s instructions for ending a live stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous playlist may run longer than that, so do not rely on the automatic archive to preserve the entire broadcast. If a complete recording matters, make a separate local recording and verify YouTube’s current archive behavior for your event.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
- VLC repeats one episode: Switch from repeat-current-item to repeat-all or the equivalent playlist-loop control, then test the end of the queue.
- The direct VLC connection does not work: Compatibility is not established across VLC versions and platforms. Confirm your build’s stream-output support or route VLC playback to a compatible encoder that accepts it.
- Audio or video is missing: Check the encoder’s selected capture/input and audio source, confirm the source plays in VLC, and inspect the YouTube preview before going live.
- The stream is unstable or drops: Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom; inspect stream health and encoder status. No setup here guarantees zero interruption.
- The broadcast archive is incomplete: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For a longer broadcast, use a separate local recording if you need a complete copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded podcast episodes without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
