For one prerecorded video, use OBS Studio’s Media Source and enable Loop. For several files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. These settings repeat playback, but OBS does not promise a gapless transition between separate playlist files—or a seamless join when one file loops back to its start. Test the exact video and audio boundaries in a private or unlisted stream before relying on them.
Choose the right kind of loop
First decide whether the material is one file or multiple files. A single file is the simpler setup; a playlist is easier to manage as separate videos but introduces handoffs between files. Neither OBS setting alone guarantees that viewers will see and hear uninterrupted playback at every boundary.
| Setup | Best suited to | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with one file looping | Repeating one video or a sequence already assembled into one file | Simple playback control, but the end-to-start join still needs testing. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Repeating several separate files | Convenient playlist control, but no official zero-gap promise at file boundaries; VLC must be installed. |
| StreamNeo, a hosted YouTube streaming service | Keeping prerecorded video live without leaving a local encoder computer running | Always on from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day. |
Choose based on whether your videos are separate files, how precisely the audio and picture must join, whether a computer can stay powered and connected, and whether you prefer local control or a hosted workflow.
Prepare your YouTube channel and live event
- Enable live streaming. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and instructions for creating a stream with an encoder.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it gives an encoder access to send video to the event.
- Plan a test event. Use a private or unlisted test to check the actual transitions, audio, and stream health before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream.
Set up OBS for one looping video
- In OBS, create a scene for the prerecorded broadcast.
- Under Sources, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS documents this as restarting the media when playback completes.
- Configure OBS to send to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. In OBS stream settings, select the YouTube service if available, then enter or connect the required stream details.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event. Watch the end-to-start join in the test rather than assuming it will be seamless.
OBS’s official Media Sources guide describes looping a single file. A single preassembled file can avoid handoffs among separate playlist entries, but its final frame-to-first-frame transition still needs to be checked.

Set up OBS for a playlist of videos
- Install VLC on the same computer as OBS. Add the VLC Video source; OBS notes that the source will not appear without VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documents that 64-bit VLC is required.
- Add the video files to the VLC source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts over after the playlist finishes.
- Send the OBS output to the YouTube event using its server URL and stream key, then check the preview during a private or unlisted test.
- Watch both picture and sound at every file change and at the playlist’s final-to-first transition. Adjust or replace files if the observed boundary is not acceptable.
The OBS documentation explains how to repeat a VLC playlist, not how to guarantee a gapless transition between different files. A 2020 OBS forum post described a brief pause when repeating a clip in a VLC playlist and no pause with a single-file Media Source loop in that poster’s setup. That is an individual report, not a guarantee across media formats, hardware, or software versions. See the OBS forum discussion.
Choose stream output settings
Set OBS’s output resolution and frame rate to match what you intend to broadcast and what your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the bitrate corresponding to your selected resolution and frame rate; do not guess a bitrate from a different format or connection.

- Use a representative test file. Include the kind of motion and audio that will actually be broadcast.
- Check the preview and stream health. Look for buffering, dropped frames, audio problems, or an unexpected blank interval at a boundary.
- Monitor the broadcast while it runs. A successful start does not confirm that the computer, connection, and media will remain trouble-free for the entire session.
Plan for long broadcasts, archives, and content rights
YouTube’s encoder article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer broadcast, do not assume the platform will create a complete archive; verify current YouTube behavior and plan how you will preserve any recording you need. YouTube also recommends setting up the encoder well before an event, starting it before the scheduled start, confirming the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality.
Only stream videos and audio you have the right to use. A loop setting does not change the rights status of the material. If monetization matters, review YouTube’s applicable rules for reused content separately; a livestream’s technical setup does not establish eligibility.

Troubleshoot playback and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS sources | VLC is not installed on the OBS computer, or the VLC and OBS architectures do not match. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check Sources. |
| A pause or click occurs between playlist files | The separate files are not joining cleanly in this playback setup. | Test the specific files and transitions. If continuity is critical, try a single preassembled file, then test its end-to-start join too. |
| The video repeats but the boundary is still visible or audible | Looping restarts playback; it does not remove a discontinuity built into the file’s ending and beginning. | Inspect and revise the source edit, then repeat the private or unlisted test. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | The event, server URL, or stream key may not be configured correctly, or live streaming may not yet be enabled for the channel. | Check the event details in Live Control Room, re-enter the correct stream details in OBS, and confirm channel eligibility and enablement. |
| Preview shows unstable video or audio | Output settings or upload capacity may not suit the stream. | Check OBS output settings against YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected resolution and frame rate; test and monitor again. |

If you already have a capable computer and a stable connection, the OBS method can use equipment you own; it does require that the computer and connection remain available during the broadcast. A hosted service removes that local-computer requirement but has its own plan and provider terms. Decide whether local control or unattended cloud operation matters more, then test the exact playback boundaries whichever workflow you choose.
