For a nonstop YouTube stream, start with the encoder’s total bitrate—not your viewers’ combined usage. Divide that bitrate by 0.8 to plan for YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. A 10 Mbps feed therefore needs about 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. For data use, multiply a steady bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 to estimate decimal gigabytes per day: 10 Mbps uses about 108 GB in 24 hours, before overhead and retransmissions.
Calculate the upload capacity your stream needs
YouTube receives one live feed from your encoder and transcodes it into formats for viewers. Your upload requirement is determined by that outgoing feed, not by the number of people watching. A prerecorded video still has to be sent as a live encoder feed for as long as the stream is running.
- Choose the output resolution and frame rate. Use the settings you intend to send to YouTube, such as 1080p30 or 2160p60.
- Find the matching live ingest recommendation. Select the row for your resolution, frame rate and encoder codec in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. Do not use the separate recommendations for uploading a finished video file.
- Use the recommended ingest bitrate as your planning rate. If your encoder outputs a total rate that includes audio, use that total in the calculation; do not add audio again.
- Reserve upload headroom. Divide the total stream bitrate by 0.8. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total bitrate, and notes that other traffic sharing the connection can reduce capacity available to the stream. See its streaming tips.
- Check the actual connection. Run an upload speed test on the network the encoder will use, then check again under ordinary household or workplace network load. Download speed does not establish upload capacity.
For more than one simultaneous feed, add their total bitrates first, then divide by 0.8. YouTube’s network advice addresses total bitrate, including primary and backup feeds.
Recommended H.264 ingest rates and upload targets
The following upload targets are calculated from YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate divided by 0.8. They are planning estimates, not additional rates published by YouTube. YouTube also lists recommended rates for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the row for the codec configured in your encoder.

#1 Best Overall
- INTERNET OFF AND ON ALERTS IN MINUTES: This internet outage detector reports to the MySpool cloud several times every minute. Two missed check-ins send an Internet OFF alert, usually delivered within 1 to 3 minutes, and an Internet ON alert follows the moment service returns.
- RECIPIENTS AND TIMING YOU CONTROL: Send alerts to up to 5 email addresses plus one SMS number. Internet ON and Internet OFF notifications can be configured separately, so you can enable both or only the alerts you need. Set active hours to help avoid unwanted notifications during the night.
- NO APP, NO HUB, NO SOFTWARE: This wired internet monitor plugs into any open LAN port on your router or switch and runs on its own. Nothing to install on a phone or PC, no gateway or bridge to buy, and no smart home ecosystem to join. A/C power cable with adapter is included. Ethernet cable is not included.
- SET YOUR OUTAGE THRESHOLD: A dashboard slider sets the outage interval anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes, so a brief dropout never fires an internet down alert. Every event is logged with a timestamp on a secure web page you can show your provider.
- RELIABLE REMOTE INTERNET MONITORING: Runs continuously with no manual input, making it practical for vacation homes, rental properties, branch offices, server closets, and camera or NVR cabinets. Designed by Bell Labs engineers, this device monitors your internet connection around the clock for outages.
| Live format | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Available upload target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 26.25 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 42.5 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 42 Mbps | 52.5 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps | 62.5 Mbps |
These H.264 recommendations come from YouTube’s live encoder guidance. The values are ingest settings, not video-upload-file bitrates.
Example: 1080p30 H.264
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264. The upload target is 14 ÷ 0.8 = 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. If other devices, backups or encoders use the same connection, their traffic also competes for capacity.

Estimate data use for a nonstop stream
A continuously running feed sends data around the clock. For a constant encoded rate of R Mbps, use these decimal estimates:
- Per day: R × 10.8 = approximate decimal GB.
- Per 30-day month: R × 324 = approximate decimal GB.
| Steady bitrate | Approximate data per 24 hours | Approximate data per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB | 2,592 GB (2.592 TB) |
| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) |
| 14 Mbps | 151.2 GB | 4,536 GB (4.536 TB) |
| 50 Mbps | 540 GB | 16,200 GB (16.2 TB) |
For example, a sustained 10 Mbps feed sends about 108 decimal GB in 24 hours and 3,240 decimal GB in 30 days. These figures are arithmetic estimates from an uninterrupted constant bitrate, not provider billing totals. Actual transfer can vary with bitrate behavior, network overhead and retransmissions.

Set the encoder for YouTube live ingest
For its listed RTMP/RTMPS live settings, YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Recommended audio rates are 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Include audio in the total-rate estimate once, whether it is already included in the encoder’s displayed output rate or must be accounted for separately.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live ingestion. The stream key tells YouTube to accept the encoder feed and functions like a password; keep it private. See YouTube’s stream key guidance. For the exact bitrate recommendations, consult the live encoder settings page.

Check stability, not just peak speed
A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee that a connection will remain adequate every minute of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% room; shared-network use can further reduce what is available. Test with the actual encoder and intended settings, and observe the stream under normal network load before relying on it continuously.
- Use upload results, not download results, to assess the encoder’s outbound capacity.
- Account for other devices and any simultaneous primary or backup feeds.
- If the computer can connect to the router by cable, Ethernet is an optional way to avoid relying on a wireless link. YouTube does not require Ethernet or specify Cat 6, and a cable cannot increase the upload speed supplied by your internet plan.
- If measured upload capacity does not meet the target with headroom, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution, limit competing traffic, or consider a broadband plan with more upload capacity.
Common bandwidth calculation mistakes
- Using download speed: the encoder sends data outward. YouTube notes that inbound/download bandwidth is often greater than outbound/upload bandwidth.
- Using upload-file settings: finished-video upload recommendations are separate from live encoder ingest recommendations.
- Buying a plan that only matches the bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% headroom, and shared traffic may leave less capacity for the stream.
- Multiplying by viewer count: the encoder sends its feed to YouTube, which transcodes it for viewers; the creator’s outbound requirement does not scale with audience size.
- Treating one speed test as proof of 24/7 reliability: a momentary result cannot establish continuous stability, so test and monitor the actual setup.
