To loop a music playlist in OBS, install VLC Media Player, add OBS’s VLC Video source to a scene, select your tracks, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to YouTube as an encoder, check the audio meters, and run a short test. VLC is required for a multi-file playlist; OBS’s built-in Media Source can loop a single file.
Before you start
- Install OBS and VLC Media Player on the computer that will run the stream. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source to appear.
- Keep the music files accessible on that computer, and use files VLC can read. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the audio types supported by its built-in Media Source; that list does not guarantee every codec variant or damaged file will work.
- Check that the YouTube channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube says channels need verification and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Confirm current access and channel status in YouTube Studio, since eligibility and interface details can change.
- Use only tracks you are authorized to broadcast on YouTube, including any intended monetization. Local playback access does not establish livestream rights.
Set up the playlist in OBS
- Make a scene. In OBS, select or create the scene you intend to stream.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add your music files. In the source properties, add the files in the order you want them to play. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want randomized playback.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents looping as on by default. With it enabled, playback starts again after the final playlist item. If you do not want the music to repeat, disable it.
- Check visibility behavior. OBS’s documented default is to stop the source when it is not visible and restart it when visible. Keep the playlist source visible in the scene that is live, and avoid switching to a scene without it if playback must continue.
Connect OBS to YouTube
YouTube identifies encoder streaming as a method for content that uses overlays and other production elements. In YouTube Studio, use the current live-stream setup to connect OBS as your encoder; follow YouTube’s current on-screen instructions for stream-key handling and encoder settings, which may change. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it in a screenshot.
OBS and YouTube’s exact recommended resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval are not specified here, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all numeric recipe. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and choose settings appropriate to your channel and available connection.
Check audio and test before going live
- Start playlist playback and watch the Audio Mixer meters in OBS. They should move when the music plays.
- If the expected meter does not move or OBS captures the wrong device, open Settings → Audio and select the correct audio device.
- Review Settings → Output and confirm your encoder output is configured as intended.
- Run a short test stream before the longer broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes to catch issues rather than going straight into a first stream.
- During the test, verify that YouTube receives audio, the playlist order is right, and playback repeats when the list ends.
Choose between a single file and a playlist
| OBS source | Best for | Looping and dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local audio or video file | Can loop the individual file; no VLC playlist is involved. |
| VLC Video | Multiple local files in a playlist | Can loop the playlist and control shuffle; requires VLC to be installed. |
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video does not appear: Install VLC, then check that the VLC architecture matches OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist stops after the last track: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Tracks play in an unexpected order: Disable Shuffle Playlist if you want the order in which files were added.
- There is no audio or the wrong sound is captured: Check the Audio Mixer meters during playback, then select the intended device in Settings → Audio.
- Playback stops after a scene change: Check the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting and ensure the playlist source remains visible in the live scene.
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification and live-streaming status in YouTube Studio, including whether a restriction has applied within the previous 90 days.
- YouTube interrupts or limits the broadcast over music: Review whether you have rights covering YouTube livestream use and any planned monetization. YouTube requires livestream content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; no particular track’s rights can be inferred just because it plays locally.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer or connection to keep OBS running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops from the cloud.
