How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream of Recorded Math Lessons with OBS

Use OBS Media Source to repeat one math lesson, or VLC Video to loop a playlist. Learn how to connect YouTube Live, choose encoder settings, and plan for a 24-hour broadcast.

To run recorded math lessons continuously on YouTube Live with OBS, create a YouTube encoder stream, add your lesson as an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled—or add a VLC Video playlist with Loop Playlist enabled—then connect OBS using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Keep the computer, OBS, power, and internet running for the broadcast; a single uninterrupted stream lasting 24 hours is longer than YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold of under 12 hours.

Choose how your lessons should repeat

Playback plan OBS source What to enable Best fit
Repeat one lesson Media Source, using a local video file Loop A single lesson or themed recording that should start over when it ends.
Cycle through lessons VLC Video source with a playlist Loop Playlist A sequence of lessons that should play in a chosen order. VLC must be installed; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

OBS Media Source supports local formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Sources Guide for source details.

Prepare YouTube Live before the scheduled start

  1. Check channel eligibility. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and make sure the channel is verified and not restricted from live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance.
  2. Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream and set its title, description, privacy, and schedule if needed.
  3. Copy the connection details. Keep the server URL and stream key available for OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Reset it if it is exposed.

YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide explains the encoder workflow and connection details.

Build and test the lesson scene in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the lesson output. Add a Media Source, select the local lesson file, and enable Loop if the video should repeat.
  2. Or make a playlist. Add a VLC Video source, add the lesson files in the desired order, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if the source is unavailable.
  3. Check the lesson presentation. Preview the scene at the output size you plan to stream. Confirm equations and written work are legible, audio is audible without clipping, and the lesson starts and ends as intended.
  4. Run the sequence locally. Let the video or playlist reach its end and restart. Check order, transitions, end cards, pauses, silence, and any black gaps. For a playlist, recordings edited to avoid unintended gaps generally make for a cleaner sequence.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. Open OBS streaming settings. Choose YouTube if it is offered, or enter the server URL from YouTube Studio and the stream key for the encoder stream you created.
  2. Start streaming from OBS. In the YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and use Go live when the scheduled workflow calls for it.
  3. Confirm the stream is actually available from its YouTube watch page. Check playback from another device, such as a phone, rather than relying only on the OBS preview.

YouTube’s controls vary with the stream setup; follow the status and actions shown for your specific stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set encoder quality for readable math

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table gives different recommended H.264 bitrates for 1080p at 30 fps and 1080p at 60 fps, among other output modes. Match the table to the actual OBS output and codec rather than carrying a bitrate over from a different mode. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.

  • Prioritize legibility and stability. For a lesson dominated by a teacher’s voice, slides, and equations, a higher frame rate is not automatically better. Choose an output mode that keeps writing readable and the stream stable.
  • Leave upload headroom. YouTube’s general streaming guidance recommends maintaining 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Check the available upload capacity; download speed alone does not establish that the connection can sustain the encoder feed.
  • Test representative material. Use a section with typical speech, any music, and the most detailed writing or motion. Inspect the Live Control Room preview, the public watch page, and playback on a mobile device; monitor both audio and video quality.

Keep the broadcast running and plan for interruption

A local OBS setup depends on the computer, OBS, power, and internet remaining available. A restart, crash, power loss, or connection failure can stop the feed. YouTube recommends using a reliable network, checking stream health, verifying a configured backup encoder, and monitoring the broadcast continuously. These practices help you spot problems; they do not guarantee a single computer will recover from every outage. Decide who will monitor the stream and how they will respond if OBS or the connection stops.

YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one continuous 24-hour session will be archived as one video. If you need a replay, consider shorter sessions or a separate local recording, then test the arrangement before relying on it. See YouTube’s encoder stream setup guidance.

Copyright, reused lessons, and monetization

Use only recordings and included material that you have the necessary rights to stream and archive—including music, images, and other third-party content. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match may result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination. If you have a license for third-party content, the rights owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams can be monetized if the channel is in the YouTube Partner Program. That does not mean a particular channel is eligible, or that continuously replaying prerecorded lessons will qualify under current monetization policies. Check the rules that apply to your channel and content; a looping stream by itself does not guarantee monetization.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming signal Wrong server URL or stream key, an exposed or reset key, or live streaming is not active for the channel. Compare the OBS connection details with the current encoder stream in Live Control Room. Check channel eligibility and activation status; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
The lesson plays once and stops Loop is off, or the source is not configured for playlist looping. For one file, enable Loop on the Media Source. For a VLC playlist, enable Loop Playlist.
VLC Video is missing from OBS VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Equations look soft or hard to read The output size, scaling, or original recording may not preserve small writing clearly. Inspect the scene and stream at the intended viewing size, including on a phone. Adjust the output mode or use a recording with clearer writing before running the full broadcast.
Video stutters or stream health degrades The encoder output may exceed stable upload capacity or the connection may be unreliable. Check stream health and available upload bandwidth, leave the recommended headroom, and test a representative section. Match bitrate to the selected output mode using YouTube’s encoder table.
Audio is missing, too quiet, or clips The source’s audio or OBS mixer levels may be misconfigured. Check OBS meters and listen to a test on the watch page, including at a mobile-device volume. Test the audio throughout a full lesson transition.
The stream stops after a copyright match Content in the lesson or its audio may match third-party material. Confirm you have the rights to stream and archive every included element. For licensed third-party content, check whether the rights owner must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

Or let it run in the cloud
