For one repeating nature video in OBS, use a Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then test the last-to-first transition in OBS and on YouTube: looping repeats playback, but OBS does not promise a gapless transition. If OBS stays visible while YouTube goes black, troubleshoot stream delivery separately from the video source.
Choose the right OBS source for your nature footage
The setting depends on whether your stream plays one file repeatedly or cycles through several. The loop controls are different, and neither one by itself guarantees a frame-perfect transition.
| What you want to play | OBS source | Loop control | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video, repeated | Media Source | Loop | Check Show nothing when playback ends and test the restart boundary. |
| Several local videos in sequence | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | Confirm VLC is installed, playlist files play, and visibility behavior suits your scene. |
OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes Loop as replaying a file after it completes and Loop Playlist as restarting a VLC source after it runs out of media files. Those descriptions explain repetition; they do not promise seamless transitions.
Set up one video to repeat
- Add the source: In the OBS scene that should show the footage, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable repetition: Open the source properties and turn on Loop.
- Check the end behavior: Review Show nothing when playback ends. When enabled, OBS automatically hides the source after its file completes. If no other visible source supplies a picture, the scene can appear empty at the endpoint.
- Test the full cycle: Preview the video through its end and restart. Check the OBS program output and the YouTube player at the boundary, not just the source properties.
Set up a playlist of nature videos
- Install the matching VLC version: OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC.
- Add VLC Video: In the intended OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the local files you want in its playlist.
- Confirm the playlist: Check that every entry points to an available file and that the clips play in the intended order.
- Enable repetition: In the VLC Video source properties, turn on Loop Playlist.
- Review visibility behavior: Check the source’s Visibility Behaviour. Its setting determines what playback does while the source is not visible; choose behavior that fits whether playback should continue when another scene is active.
- Test the boundary: Watch the final clip finish and the first clip begin. Verify both the OBS output and the remote YouTube player.
Find which part of the stream is going black
Observe OBS’s program output and YouTube at the same moment the picture disappears. This separates a local playback problem from a delivery problem; changing bitrate will not repair a source that has stopped producing a picture.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- OBS output is black too: Inspect the active scene, source visibility, file paths, playlist order, source end behavior, and whether the relevant loop option is enabled.
- OBS output looks correct but YouTube is black or stops: Check encoder stream status, messages in YouTube Live Control Room, upload bandwidth, and connection stability.
- Only a transition is affected: Re-test that exact file boundary. A loop setting repeats playback but is not a documented gapless-transition guarantee.
Test the stream and check delivery settings
YouTube’s official streaming guidance recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Test representative footage, including its motion and audio, and watch the actual destination player through at least one file boundary. YouTube’s encoder guidance provides bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current guidance for your chosen configuration rather than treating one bitrate as a universal fix.
- Check available upload capacity: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate. That margin can help with delivery reliability, but it cannot fix a local source that emits no picture.
- Separate delivery symptoms from playback symptoms: Poor or disrupted connectivity can affect the remote stream even while local playback looks normal. Conversely, a black OBS output at a file endpoint points first to the source, scene, or playlist.
- Use the correct type of fix: Adjust encoder or network settings for remote delivery trouble; fix source, visibility, or playlist behavior when the local output goes black.
Common black-screen causes and fixes
- Loop is off on a single-file Media Source: Enable Loop and test the restart.
- Playlist repetition is off: For multiple local files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; the single-file Media Source control is not the playlist control.
- The source hides at the end: Check Show nothing when playback ends in Media Source. If it is enabled, make sure another visible layer supplies the image or change the setting to fit your scene.
- VLC Video is unavailable or files do not play: Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. Check playlist entries and file availability.
- The source is hidden or playback stops off-scene: Inspect VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour and select behavior consistent with your scene setup.
- OBS looks fine but the YouTube stream does not: Check YouTube stream-health messages, encoder status, upload headroom, and connection stability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the source and transitions are working but you do not want a home computer and connection to remain on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded video; it does not broadcast from a camera. This changes where the stream runs, not the need to test your video transitions.
