How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Running on a Raspberry Pi During Indian Monsoon Outages

Keeping an FFmpeg stream live through a monsoon outage means backing up the whole chain—not just the Pi—and testing power, network, and process recovery on the real setup.

A Raspberry Pi can keep an FFmpeg stream going through a monsoon power cut only if the whole chain stays powered and connected: the Pi, its video source and network equipment, plus a stable internet connection. Match the Pi’s power supply to its model, size backup power for every essential device, leave upload headroom, and test power-loss and network-recovery behavior on the actual setup. There is no universal UPS size or India-wide internet provider recommendation that guarantees continuity.

What has to stay online for the stream to survive a power cut?

A live stream depends on more than the Raspberry Pi. Trace the signal and power path from the video source to YouTube, and identify every device that must remain operational.

  • Video source: camera, capture device, or media file and its storage. Include any powered accessories that the chosen input needs.
  • Encoder: the Raspberry Pi, its power supply, storage, cooling, and connected USB devices.
  • Local network: router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and any switch or access point needed to connect the Pi.
  • Internet service: the ISP’s local equipment and upstream connection. Keeping your own router powered does not ensure that the ISP’s network remains available.

Write down which components are essential, their power requirements, and how they connect. A battery backup connected only to the Pi cannot preserve a stream if the router, modem, ONT, camera, or capture device loses power.

How do I keep my YouTube live stream running during a power cut?

1. Match the power supply to the exact Raspberry Pi model

Use the power guidance for the board you have, rather than treating every Raspberry Pi as if it had the same needs. Raspberry Pi documentation recommends an official power supply appropriate to the model. Its currently listed guidance is:

Raspberry Pi model Documented supply recommendation Important qualification
Raspberry Pi 5 or Raspberry Pi 500 5 V, 5 A A 5 V, 3 A supply limits available peripheral power to 600 mA.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B or Raspberry Pi 400 5 V, 3 A Check the current guidance for the exact board and attached devices.
Raspberry Pi 3 5 V, 2.5 A Check the current guidance for the exact board and attached devices.

These are supply recommendations, not measurements of your stream’s actual power draw and not promises of battery runtime. USB peripherals, a capture device, fans, and cable voltage loss can affect whether the board receives adequate power. Review the current Raspberry Pi getting-started and power guidance for your exact model before choosing backup equipment.

2. Back up the complete powered chain

Choose backup power that can support every component the stream needs, not just the Pi. That may mean a Raspberry Pi UPS or battery backup for the board and a separate UPS for the router, modem/ONT, or switch. Check that the backup has suitable outputs and that its transfer behavior works with your equipment.

Do not infer runtime from a UPS’s advertised capacity or a power supply’s maximum rating. Runtime depends on the actual load, usable battery capacity, conversion losses, connected devices, and how the backup behaves under load. The right runtime cannot be calculated without those installation-specific values. Measure the load and verify runtime with the whole setup running.

3. Check whether the internet connection survives local mains loss

Ask your ISP whether service at your address continues during a local power cut and whether its nearby network equipment has backup power. If you use a cellular router or a backup mobile connection, check signal and upload performance at the installation location during the hours the stream will run. A second connection is only useful if it has sufficiently independent power and network failure points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no established India-wide provider recommendation or universal claim that internet service will remain available during monsoon outages. Local coverage, network design, and backup arrangements matter.

4. Test a real power interruption before relying on the setup

  1. Start the Pi, input device, network equipment, and stream under the conditions in which you expect to broadcast.
  2. Watch YouTube Live Control Room and the stream while someone safely interrupts mains power to the backed-up equipment. Confirm that the backup transfers without a reboot, undervoltage warning, or loss of input.
  3. Check that the router, modem/ONT, and any switch remain online, and that YouTube continues receiving video and audio with acceptable stream health.
  4. Separately test a brief network outage and a stopped FFmpeg process. These are different failures from a power cut and need separate recovery checks.
  5. Repeat the checks after changing the Pi, input device, power supply, UPS, cabling, router, or encoder settings.

Do not rely on a battery runtime estimate alone: confirm the behavior of the real installation while monitoring the YouTube stream.

Which FFmpeg and YouTube settings should I use?

Start with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to fit the measured upload capacity and what the Pi can encode or pass through. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; four seconds is the maximum. Use a codec supported by YouTube, such as H.264, and confirm the current YouTube live encoder settings before configuring the encoder, since guidance can change.

Use measured upload capacity, not the advertised plan speed

Measure stable outbound upload at the location and times the stream will run. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom: the stream’s total bitrate should stay below the available upload bandwidth, with that margin left over. A connection that briefly reaches the target speed is not sufficient evidence that it can sustain a stream through busy periods or adverse weather.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube’s currently surfaced H.264 recommendations include these examples. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees of achievable quality, Pi encoding performance, or stability on a particular connection.

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate YouTube H.264 minimum shown
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

Values depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s current table for your chosen output and leave the recommended upload margin rather than treating the minimum as a target.

Keep encoding load within the Pi’s capabilities

The Pi model, input format, and whether FFmpeg has to transcode the video are not specified here, so no particular resolution or frame rate can be guaranteed to run reliably. If the input is already encoded in a format and output configuration YouTube accepts, copying the encoded stream rather than transcoding may avoid extra encoding work; verify that the stream’s codec, dimensions, frame rate, and audio are compatible with the intended output. If you need to transcode, test the exact workload and watch for dropped frames or encoder overload before making it unattended.

FFmpeg options depend on the input and chosen encoding path. Build the command from the current FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s encoder requirements; do not paste a generic command without adapting its input, output format, credentials, and codec settings. Never publish or share your YouTube stream key. Enter it only in the encoder configuration you control, and replace it if it is exposed.

How do I restart FFmpeg automatically if it disconnects?

Use a process supervisor or operating-system service manager configured to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected process exit. First decide what should happen after a normal stop: some configurations should remain stopped until an operator starts them again, while others should restart unless deliberately disabled. Validate the behavior on the deployed operating system rather than assuming a universal FFmpeg reconnect command applies.

Process supervision addresses only one failure case. Restarting FFmpeg may recover after the process exits, but it cannot restore missing input, internet access, valid credentials, exhausted backup power, or damaged storage. Test at least these cases separately:

  • FFmpeg exits while the input and internet remain available.
  • The network drops briefly and then returns.
  • The router or modem reboots or loses its upstream service.
  • The Pi loses power, then power is restored.
  • The input device or media file becomes unavailable.

Watch YouTube Live Control Room during those tests. A local process restart, successful reconnection to YouTube, and the viewer-facing event/player behavior are related but distinct outcomes.

Protect the Pi’s storage and plan a safe shutdown

Sudden power loss can put storage integrity at risk. If your UPS exposes battery status and your setup supports it, configure a clean shutdown before the battery is exhausted, and test that shutdown and subsequent boot. Do not treat an RTC battery or the Pi’s ordinary power supply as outage backup.

Use storage and a boot configuration appropriate for unattended operation, and keep a recovery plan for restoring the system if its boot media is corrupted. Verify that FFmpeg and the network service start as intended after a planned reboot; a successful manual launch does not prove that the unattended startup path works.

Why YouTube may still stop a stream even when the Pi stays powered

Power continuity does not guarantee a healthy YouTube broadcast. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room, confirm that the configured event and encoder settings are correct, and test the complete stream before depending on it. YouTube advises checking the stream before going live and verifying backup-encoder failover where it is part of the setup.

Copyright and reused-content considerations also apply to uploaded or looped material. Use content you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable policies for the channel and content. A continuously available encoder does not make copyrighted material authorized or guarantee that a channel or stream will remain eligible under YouTube’s rules. Use this copyright safety checklist as a practical pre-stream review.

Troubleshooting: common interruptions and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate What to check or do
The Pi reboots or reports undervoltage when the stream starts. Supply capacity, cable voltage loss, or connected peripherals. Use the model-appropriate supply, inspect the cable and connections, and account for USB devices and capture hardware. Re-test the full load.
The Pi stays on, but YouTube loses the stream during a power cut. Router, modem/ONT, switch, input device, or ISP service is unpowered or unavailable. Identify which part of the chain failed. Back up every essential local device and confirm with the ISP whether service remains available at the address during mains loss.
The stream disconnects or shows poor health while the Pi remains powered. Upload capacity, network instability, encoder settings, or upstream service. Measure stable upload during broadcast hours; lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed while preserving YouTube’s recommended headroom; check Live Control Room health.
FFmpeg stops and does not return. Process exit, service configuration, or an unrecoverable input or network problem. Confirm the supervisor’s restart policy using a controlled process-stop test. Inspect logs and verify input and network recovery separately.
FFmpeg restarts but YouTube does not resume the expected live event. Stream-key or event configuration, credentials, connection state, or YouTube-side behavior. Check the encoder configuration and Live Control Room. Test reconnect and event/player behavior separately; a process restart alone does not ensure the event resumes.
The system fails to boot after a sudden shutdown. Storage integrity or power-loss damage. Use a tested recovery path for the boot media. If supported by the UPS and system, configure and test a clean low-battery shutdown.
The UPS runs out sooner than expected. Runtime estimate did not reflect actual load or usable battery capacity. Measure runtime with the Pi and all essential network and input devices operating together; do not extrapolate from the unit’s maximum rating.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your broadcast is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to running FFmpeg on a Pi: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered at home. It does not broadcast a live camera feed.
