Run tmux on the remote Linux host that runs FFmpeg, start your stream inside a named tmux session, then detach with Ctrl+b followed by d. You can close SSH; FFmpeg remains in that session as long as the process, host, and network connection keep working. Later, SSH back into the same host and account and reattach to the session.
What you need before starting
- A remote Linux host with FFmpeg and tmux installed, and network access to YouTube Live. tmux must run on the same host as FFmpeg; running it on your laptop does not protect a process running on the remote machine.
- A YouTube channel able to go live, and the current stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- An FFmpeg command appropriate for your video and audio inputs, codecs, and intended stream settings.
If you do not already have a remote host, a Linux VPS is one possible hosting option; it is not required if you already have a suitable machine.
Start the stream in a named tmux session
- SSH into the host that will run FFmpeg. Confirm you are using the account under which you intend to keep the session.
- Create a named session: run
tmux new -s youtube-live. If you may already have started it, inspect existing sessions withtmux lsfirst. To attach to an existing session or create it if absent, usetmux new-session -A -s youtube-live; this can help avoid launching a duplicate stream. - Run FFmpeg inside the tmux terminal. For a file input, FFmpeg documents this real-time streaming pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
Replace the input and destination placeholders with your actual source and YouTube endpoint. This is a pattern, not a complete YouTube command: configure codecs, bitrate, resolution, audio, and any looping or playlist behavior for your source. The-reoption reads a file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. A normal finite file stops at its end; tmux does not loop it. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation. - Get the destination from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS URL and key shown for your stream, and ensure your FFmpeg build and network support the chosen protocol. Keep the real key private; use a placeholder such as
<STREAM_KEY>in scripts, screenshots, or shared examples. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. - Check the output before detaching. Wait for FFmpeg to connect and inspect its output for errors. In Live Control Room, check stream health and test with representative motion and audio before relying on the stream. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance covers supported codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Recommended bitrates depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose from YouTube’s applicable table rather than treating one value as universal.
Detach, close SSH, and reattach later
Detach without stopping FFmpeg
While FFmpeg is still running in the session, press Ctrl+b, release both keys, then press d. This detaches the tmux client while leaving the session and its programs running. Now you can close the SSH connection.
Do not type exit in the shell where FFmpeg is running, stop FFmpeg, or kill the tmux session if you want the stream to continue.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reconnect to inspect the stream
SSH back into the same host as the same user, then run tmux attach-session -t youtube-live (or tmux attach -t youtube-live). You will return to the session and can inspect FFmpeg’s output. Check YouTube Live Control Room as well for stream health.
What tmux does—and what it cannot do
tmux keeps a terminal session available after its client disconnects, so losing the SSH terminal alone does not end a program still running in that session. It is not a process supervisor: it will not restart FFmpeg after an error, bring the stream back after a host reboot, or guarantee that the connection to YouTube remains healthy. Those are separate failure cases involving FFmpeg, the host, or the network. If restart after failure or recovery after reboot is required, configure a suitable service manager or another deliberate recovery mechanism; tmux alone does not provide it.

FFmpeg also has a FIFO muxer example intended to retry streaming after temporary output failures. That is an FFmpeg-level behavior, separate from tmux’s terminal-session persistence; see the FFmpeg documentation.
Troubleshooting
tmux attachsays the session was not found: confirm you SSHed to the same host and account where you created it, and that the tmux server/socket configuration is unchanged. The session may have ended if its shell exited or it was killed.- FFmpeg exits when you disconnect: confirm tmux is running on the remote host and that FFmpeg was launched inside that tmux session, not in a separate SSH shell.
- FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube: retrieve the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check for transcription errors, and verify the FFmpeg build and network support the selected protocol. YouTube notes that a connection problem can indicate an incorrect URL or lack of RTMPS support in the encoder.
- The stream stops at the end of the video: that is expected for a finite input. Configure a loop or playlist deliberately; tmux does not repeat the input automatically.
- The stream does not recover after a temporary output failure: tmux does not retry FFmpeg. Consider an FFmpeg-level retry approach such as the documented FIFO muxer behavior, and test it with your actual input and endpoint.
- The session disappears after a reboot or FFmpeg failure: that is outside tmux’s persistence guarantee. Use a separately configured supervisor or recovery mechanism if those failures must be handled automatically.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: check FFmpeg’s output and the Live Control Room, then verify codec, bitrate, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings for the selected resolution and codec.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than managing a remote Linux process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free first day.
