A 1 vCPU VPS may be enough to relay compatible, already-encoded media to YouTube if FFmpeg copies the streams instead of decoding and re-encoding them. But that does not guarantee a successful or reliable broadcast: the input must stay available, the selected streams must work with the output format, and the VPS needs enough sustained outbound bandwidth. No official source establishes a universal bitrate, resolution, or reliability limit for this workload.
What “without re-encoding” means
FFmpeg can either copy encoded audio and video streams or decode and encode them again. The -c copy option requests stream copy: it avoids re-encoding the selected streams, so the CPU-heavy encoding stage is absent. FFmpeg recommends stream copy when transcoding is unnecessary because encoding tends to be computationally expensive and can reduce quality. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Stream copy is not a compatibility converter. If YouTube’s ingest path or the selected output format cannot accept a source codec or stream arrangement, adding -c copy will not fix it. The command must be checked against the actual input, FFmpeg build, output container and ingest mode.
First, identify what “YouTube playlist” means
These workflows are not interchangeable, and the available documentation does not establish that every online YouTube playlist can be used directly as an FFmpeg input.

- Local playlist sent to YouTube: FFmpeg reads media files or a local playlist on the VPS and sends the selected streams to YouTube. The files must remain readable throughout playback.
- Online YouTube playlist used as the source: The playlist must be continuously accessible in a form FFmpeg can read. Do not assume a YouTube watch-page URL is a directly usable media input; URL extraction, availability and rights are separate issues.
- Looped source: A file or list of files is repeated as the input. Confirm that the playlist mechanism handles transitions and that each item is compatible with the output. A single successful file does not establish that every item in a mixed playlist will work.
When one vCPU may be enough
For a straightforward pass-through relay, FFmpeg need not encode the video again. That makes a 1 vCPU VPS plausible for the processing portion, but not guaranteed for every host or workload. The official sources provide no benchmark proving that a particular one-vCPU instance can handle a given resolution or bitrate.
CPU capacity becomes more important when the workflow must decode and encode media. FFmpeg notes that common reasons to transcode include applying filters such as resizing or deinterlacing, resampling or mixing audio, or converting to a codec the destination cannot decode. Without -c copy, FFmpeg transcodes streams by default.

Build a pass-through command carefully
The general pattern is to select the intended streams and request copy. This is a template, not a verified command for every playlist or YouTube ingest configuration:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy OUTPUT
-rereads input at real-time pace. FFmpeg documents it as a building block in live-paced examples; that does not prove a particular playlist URL, codec combination or output will work.-i INPUTmust be replaced with an input FFmpeg can actually read, such as an accessible local media file. For a list or online source, use the input form appropriate to that source and validate it independently.-map 0:v:0and-map 0:a:0select the first video and audio streams. Change the maps if the source has different streams; remove or adjust them if a stream is absent or not wanted.-c:v copy -c:a copycopies the selected video and audio streams. Use-c copywhen copying all selected streams is appropriate. Neither form makes an unsupported codec or output combination compatible.OUTPUTmust be replaced by the destination required by the chosen YouTube ingest mode. Confirm the current ingest details in YouTube’s live setup; no YouTube-specific codec, protocol or bitrate limits are established here.
FFmpeg’s complete documentation includes -re in HLS examples, but this is evidence for a supported live-paced workflow component—not a guarantee that any playlist can be relayed to YouTube unchanged. See the FFmpeg complete documentation.

Check the VPS beyond its CPU count
- Outbound capacity: Compare the stream’s measured bitrate plus protocol overhead with the VPS provider’s sustained egress capacity. Confirm traffic allowances and any fair-use limits. No safe bitrate or suitable VPS plan is established here.
- Source continuity: The input files, playlist and any remote source must remain available for the duration of the broadcast. A CPU that can copy streams cannot compensate for a missing or stalled source.
- Host and network reliability: Check the provider’s CPU allocation policy, network reliability and region for your use case. A nominal vCPU count alone does not establish performance.
- Playlist consistency: Inspect each item’s codecs and stream layout. A later file that differs from the first may fail even if the initial item plays.
FFmpeg’s SRT documentation discusses bandwidth control for SRT live transmission, but it does not state YouTube ingest requirements. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.
If the workflow has to encode
When filters, audio changes or codec conversion are required, the VPS must decode and encode in real time. Google’s VP9 live-encoding guidance says a live encoder must sustain at least 1× real-time speed; falling behind can cause buffering or broken transmission. That is a general encoding threshold, not a benchmark for a 1 vCPU VPS or proof that it can encode a particular resolution.
Troubleshoot by failure type
- FFmpeg rejects stream copy or the output is not accepted: Check the source codecs, selected streams, output container and ingest mode. Stream copy does not repair incompatibility; choose a compatible source/output combination or accept that transcoding may be necessary.
- CPU use is high despite expecting a relay: Confirm the command includes copy options for the streams being sent and does not apply filters, resizing, audio mixing or conversion elsewhere in the workflow. Those operations can require transcoding.
- The broadcast buffers or disconnects while CPU use is modest: Check sustained outbound throughput, transfer limits and network stability, then compare egress capacity with the actual stream bitrate plus overhead.
- The stream works initially, then stops at a playlist transition: Verify that the next item is available and its selected streams are compatible with the same output path.
- Encoding falls behind real time: If transcoding is unavoidable, measure whether the encoder sustains real-time speed. A one-vCPU label alone cannot answer that; the result depends on the encoding workload and the host.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Technical ability to relay a playlist does not establish that you have the right to broadcast its contents or that a channel will qualify for monetization. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current rules for live broadcasts, copyright and reused content before running a continuous playlist. No YouTube-specific policy thresholds are established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than configure and maintain a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded videos stream at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
