Run FFmpeg as a Docker Compose-managed service on a rented Linux server. It reads authorized video files from persistent storage, loops and encodes them as needed, and sends the stream to YouTube over RTMPS using the stream key from Live Control Room. This keeps your personal computer out of the streaming path, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the server, network, encoder, media, and YouTube ingest all still need monitoring.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream with an encoder. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned start time. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and its encoder setup guidance.
  • A rented Linux server with enough sustained outbound capacity for your chosen stream settings, plus headroom for audio and network overhead. If FFmpeg must transcode the video, the server also needs enough CPU for that workload. There is no single server size or transfer allowance that fits every source file and output.
  • Video and audio files you have permission to livestream and, if applicable, archive. Permission to use a file does not necessarily cover every song, image, or other element inside it.
  • A Docker installation with Docker Compose available on the server, persistent storage for your media, and a way to keep the stream key out of public files, logs, and source control.

Prepare the channel and stream key

  1. Enable encoder livestreaming early. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check that the channel meets the current eligibility conditions before building around it.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the connection details shown there rather than guessing an ingest endpoint. YouTube documents the stream URL and stream key as separate values that an encoder may accept separately or together; see the LiveStreams documentation.
  3. Choose RTMPS. Use the RTMPS URL supplied for the stream. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP and specifies TLS over port 443; its RTMPS setup guidance explains the secure ingest option. Do not replace the supplied host or path with a guessed address.
  4. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Put it in protected runtime configuration, not a public Compose file, container image, shared repository, or command history. Restrict access to the server and rotate the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed.

Choose the encoder settings

Match the output to the source, the server’s capacity, and YouTube’s current recommendations. YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec; select the applicable range from its RTMPS ingestion recommendations rather than using a universal bitrate.

Setting Use What to check
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate as YouTube recommends for encoder output.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; never over 4 seconds Configure the encoder to meet YouTube’s recommended interval.
Video codec H.264, H.265, or AV1 Choose a supported codec that your encoder and playback workflow handle correctly.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Confirm the stream has the intended audio track and that it is audible in the preview.
Resolution and frame rate Choose for the source and intended output Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not upscale a low-resolution source merely to raise the output setting.

For a file already compatible with YouTube, FFmpeg may be able to pass through its encoded streams rather than transcode them, reducing CPU use. That only works when the input format, timestamps, audio, frame rate, and keyframe behavior meet the output requirements. Otherwise, configure an encode and test it with the actual files and container image. FFmpeg supports RTMPS transport; see its protocol documentation.

Build the Docker Compose service

Use a maintained FFmpeg image and define a service that reads your media, runs FFmpeg in real time, and publishes to the RTMPS destination. The exact image, FFmpeg arguments, and Compose configuration depend on the source files, whether you need transcoding, and how you manage secrets. There is no single safe command or ready-made configuration that can be assumed to work for every input, and the specific Compose syntax should be checked against current Docker documentation before deployment.

  1. Stage the media. Put the source files in persistent server storage. Mount that directory read-only into the container where possible. If you also record a local copy, use a separate persistent volume and monitor its free space.
  2. Define the service’s responsibilities. Configure it to read the intended file or playlist, repeat or advance through the media as required, and output compatible audio and video. Ensure the process reads at real-time speed rather than consuming the file as fast as possible.
  3. Supply credentials at runtime. Pass the RTMPS destination and key through a protected runtime mechanism supported by your current deployment. Do not bake credentials into the image. Confirm that logs do not print the key.
  4. Configure recovery and observability. Use a container restart policy for process or container exits, and make restart loops visible through logs or alerts. A restart policy cannot fix a failed provider network, insufficient transfer allowance, invalid media, a revoked key, or a YouTube-side interruption.
  5. Start with a test stream. Use an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test, then confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room and that picture and sound are correct before relying on the setup.

Test the stream and monitor its health

Test using representative video and audio, not only a short static sample. Review the stream preview and Live Control Room’s stream health, and watch the encoder logs for errors. YouTube’s livestream tips recommend testing and monitoring quality; they also call out checking local archive growth when recording.

  • Verify that the video is moving as expected, the audio is present and balanced, and the selected resolution and frame rate are reaching the preview.
  • Confirm that the media loops or advances to the next item without an unintended dead period or process exit.
  • If recording locally, check that the file continues to grow and that the volume has enough free space.
  • Test the failure cases relevant to your deployment: container exit and restart, host reboot, end-of-file behavior, a rotated key, and whether your monitoring detects a failed or stalled stream.
  • Watch both sides of the connection: a running container only says the process is alive; it does not prove YouTube is receiving or displaying the feed.

Plan for long streams and archives

A continuous public livestream and a dependable YouTube replay are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams beyond 12 hours. Check YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance for current details.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to inspect Practical next step
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Stream URL, key, channel readiness, or outbound connectivity Recheck the exact RTMPS details in Live Control Room, verify the channel is enabled for encoder streaming, and inspect the server’s connection and FFmpeg logs.
The container exits when a file ends Loop or playlist behavior Check how the FFmpeg process handles end-of-file and confirm the service is configured for the intended repeat or playlist behavior.
Video appears but has errors or poor stream health Bitrate, output settings, or server capacity Compare the chosen bitrate and output format with YouTube’s table, then check sustained server outbound capacity and encoding load.
The image works but audio is missing or wrong Input track selection or audio encoding Inspect the source’s audio tracks and the encoder output; verify a supported audio codec and listen to the Live Control Room preview.
The process is running but viewers cannot watch normally YouTube ingest or stream health Check Live Control Room as well as container logs; a healthy Docker process does not establish that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
The stream stops after a credential change Stream key or runtime configuration Copy the active key from Live Control Room into protected runtime configuration and restart the service without exposing the value in logs.
The container repeatedly restarts Invalid arguments, unreadable files, or a failing process Read the container logs, confirm the media mount and permissions, and validate the FFmpeg configuration against the actual input before restarting.
A long stream has no YouTube replay Archive duration limits Do not rely on automatic capture for streams over 12 hours; use a monitored local recording if an archive is required.

Budget for the rented server

Compare servers by region and route to YouTube ingest, sustained outbound capacity and transfer allowance, CPU if transcoding, storage for source files and any local archive, and recovery and monitoring options. Check the provider’s current limits and recurring cost for the exact location and plan you intend to use. No universal server size or hosting price can be specified for this workflow: requirements change with the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, whether FFmpeg transcodes, and how much you record.
