Choose an OBS plugin that matches the architecture and OBS version of the OBS installation actually running on your dedicated PC. Neither 32-bit nor 64-bit is automatically “better” for plugins: a mismatched build may not load, and plugin bitness is not a way to improve stream performance.
What 32-bit vs. 64-bit means for OBS plugins
OBS plugins are built for particular software environments. The OBS Project’s Plugins Guide identifies platform, architecture, and OBS version as compatibility factors. A plugin compiled for one architecture should not be assumed to work with OBS running as another architecture.
The rule is to match the plugin to the OBS process/build in use—not simply to choose the architecture of the PC’s operating system. Check the plugin author’s documentation or release notes for its supported platform, architecture, and OBS versions.
Check compatibility before installing or updating
- Identify the OBS build you actually run. Check the installed application’s build or executable information rather than inferring its architecture from Windows alone. The official OBS download page lists OBS Studio 32.2.2 and says its Windows release supports Windows 10 and 11; the retrieved installer listing does not state whether the Windows installer is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not infer a 32-bit build’s availability from that page.
- Check the plugin’s own compatibility notes. Confirm the supported operating system/platform, architecture, and OBS release. OBS notes that some plugins are available only for particular platforms and that plugins may be incompatible if they were not updated for the OBS version in use.
- Check version direction as well as version number. OBS Studio 32.0 release notes say OBS will no longer load plugins built for a newer OBS release, to prevent compatibility issues. A matching architecture alone does not guarantee a plugin will load.
- Install the matching supported build, then verify it in OBS. Follow the plugin author’s installation and troubleshooting instructions. If it does not appear or load, check architecture, platform, and OBS-version support before changing stream settings.
How to update a dedicated streaming PC safely
A dedicated PC does not change the compatibility rule. Because plugins are loaded when OBS starts, an OBS update can affect a working production setup. OBS’s Developer Guide explains that plugins are commonly dynamic libraries and that later OBS versions may require recompilation.

- Record the currently working OBS version and the versions of plugins your scenes depend on.
- Before updating OBS, read the plugin authors’ release notes for support for the target OBS version.
- Update in a controlled window, then open the project and verify the scenes, sources, filters, audio, and video chain used for your broadcast.
- Keep a known-good configuration and a recovery plan available before relying on the updated setup for a scheduled stream.
This is a precaution based on OBS’s compatibility and loading documentation, not a guarantee that any particular update will fail.
Plugin bitness does not determine stream performance
Do not switch between 32-bit and 64-bit plugins as a performance tweak. OBS says CPU requirements depend on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee that a particular streaming or recording workload will run well. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then validate the actual stream workload on the PC.

Compare the relevant factors separately:
- Architecture: plugin build versus the OBS process/build architecture.
- Platform: Windows, macOS, Linux, or the relevant distribution and packaging method.
- OBS release: the plugin’s stated support for the installed OBS version.
- Workload: encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity—not plugin bitness.
Version and driver notes
The OBS download listing identifies version 32.2.2 as released August 14, but its retrieved page text does not state a year. OBS Studio 32.2 release notes, dated July 21, 2026, say the minimum supported driver version is now 570 in the context of an NVIDIA SDK update. That is a release-specific note for affected NVIDIA functionality, not a universal driver requirement for every OBS installation.
