Add your files to its playlist, leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order, and enable Loop Playlist to start over when the final file ends. This repeats the media; OBS and the computer running it must remain online to keep sending the broadcast.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio and VLC media player. VLC Video relies on VLC libraries; if your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. Without VLC installed, VLC Video may not appear as a source. OBS Media Sources documentation
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time live access may take up to 24 hours to activate. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
- The video files you want to play, stored somewhere the computer running OBS can access. If you use an external drive, keep it connected for the duration of the stream.
The steps below use YouTube’s standard encoder setup, which connects OBS to a broadcast using a server URL and stream key. Interface labels can change; the cited OBS help pages are dated 2022-01-11, and YouTube’s help pages were available on 2026-10-03.
Add multiple videos to one OBS source
- Open the scene for the broadcast. In OBS, select the scene you will use for the YouTube stream.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources dock, select the plus button, then choose VLC Video. Name the source if useful, then open its properties. OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist-capable option; the standard Media Source is intended for a single file. OBS Media Sources documentation OBS Sources Guide
- Add the files in playback order. Use the playlist controls in the source properties to add your local videos. Arrange them in the order you want them to play. The playlist order is the playback order when shuffle is off.
- Set looping and shuffle. Turn on Loop Playlist to return to the beginning after the last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; turn it on if you want the file order randomized. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default and Shuffle Playlist as disabled by default, but check the properties rather than relying on defaults. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. VLC Video’s documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. Keep the source visible in the broadcast scene, or deliberately adjust its visibility behavior if you need something different. The eye icon in the Sources dock hides or shows a source, so avoid toggling it accidentally during playback. OBS Media Sources documentation OBS Sources Guide
Connect OBS to a YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or select the broadcast you intend to use.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter these in the server and stream key fields. Treat the key like a password: do not show or share it publicly.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the encoder preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, confirm that it is the intended stream, then select Go live in YouTube. YouTube encoder setup
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but it is an advanced alternative to the usual encoder setup: HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires additional protocol settings. Use it only if you specifically need that ingestion method. YouTube HLS setup
Test the whole sequence before broadcasting publicly
Use a short private or unlisted broadcast to check the actual output. Confirm that the first file appears, audio is audible, the transition to the next item works, and the final item returns to the start when looping is enabled. If you are using a scheduled stream, verify that OBS is connected to the correct broadcast before selecting Go live. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes preview and private or unlisted stream settings. YouTube encoder setup

Choose the right OBS source for your files
| Source or setup | Media items | Repeat and order | What must keep running | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local file | Can loop that file; not a multi-file playlist control | OBS and the encoding computer | Repeating one video |
| OBS VLC Video | Multiple local files in a playlist | Loop Playlist repeats the list; Shuffle Playlist randomizes it | OBS, VLC, and the encoding computer | Playing a fixed sequence or shuffled set of local clips |
| Cloud continuous-stream service | Depends on the provider’s library and limits | Depends on the service | A service account and its upload or library workflow; confirm provider details | Running prerecorded content without a dedicated local OBS computer |

Copyright and YouTube policy checks for a documentary playlist
- Only include footage, music, narration, and other material that you have the right to livestream on YouTube. A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you have streaming rights.
- Review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before assembling a long-running playlist. Repeating content does not change the rights status of the underlying material or guarantee that a channel complies with YouTube policies.
- Check every item, including background music and clips embedded in a documentary. Keep records of licenses or permissions relevant to your use.
The OBS and YouTube setup documentation cited here explains the technical workflow, not whether any particular documentary or clip is cleared for your channel.

Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: install VLC, matching its architecture to OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), then reopen or refresh OBS as needed. OBS Media Sources documentation
- The playlist plays only one file or does not repeat: confirm that the files were added to the VLC Video playlist, not as separate one-file Media Sources, and check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Files play in the wrong order: disable Shuffle Playlist and arrange the playlist entries in the intended sequence.
- The picture stops when you switch scenes or hide the source: check whether the VLC source became hidden. Its documented default stops playback while hidden and restarts it when visible. Keep it visible in the live scene or adjust the relevant source behavior deliberately.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: verify that OBS contains the server URL and stream key for the selected broadcast, and check that live streaming is enabled for the channel. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The broadcast preview is black or silent: confirm the VLC source is visible, the selected files are available to the computer, and their audio is audible in OBS before you go live. Use a private or unlisted stream to identify problems without starting a public broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS looping depends on OBS, the computer, power, and the internet connection continuing to send the encoder feed. If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start with StreamNeo.
