Use an OBS Scene Collection to copy and organize scenes and sources, and use an OBS Profile when you need a separate set of stream, video, or output settings. Set up each YouTube live event separately in YouTube Studio; its “Reuse settings” option copies a previous event’s metadata, settings, and stream key. These are separate steps: duplicating an OBS scene does not connect it to a YouTube playlist or make OBS switch scenes when a playlist changes.
Choose what you need to duplicate
OBS keeps scene layouts and output configuration in different places. The OBS Project’s Scene Collections documentation, dated January 14, 2022, says collections save scenes and sources and do not store output settings. Its Profiles documentation, also dated January 14, 2022, says profiles save stream, video, and output settings, but do not store scenes. Menu appearance can vary in newer OBS versions, but the distinction is the key to choosing the right feature.
| Your goal | Use | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse or change a set of scenes and sources | Scene Collection | Scenes, sources, and Global Audio Sources |
| Reuse or change a destination, connected account, video setting, or output configuration | Profile | Stream (including Connected Account), Video, and Output settings |
| Create a YouTube event using details from an earlier event | YouTube Live Control Room: “Reuse settings” | Previous stream metadata, settings, and stream key |
Use a Scene Collection and a Profile together if both the layout and the stream configuration need to differ.
Duplicate or organize the OBS scene setup
Use a Scene Collection for scenes and sources
Scene Collections are the OBS feature for keeping different scene and source arrangements. The OBS Project describes them as a way to save scenes and sources for different situations, such as separate collections for different kinds of streams. They also contain Global Audio Sources configured through Settings → Audio.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open the Scene Collection menu.
- Choose the collection you want to work with, or create a separate collection for the alternate stream setup.
- Add or arrange the scenes and sources needed for that setup. Keep in mind that a collection does not save output settings.
- Switch collections when you need the corresponding scene-and-source arrangement.
OBS’s documentation describes saving and switching Scene Collections; it does not establish a dedicated command that links a duplicated scene to a YouTube playlist.
Duplicate a Profile only for settings
If you need a separate set of output or account settings, use the Profile menu’s Duplicate command. The OBS Project lists Stream (including Connected Account), Video (including Base (Canvas) Resolution), and Output settings as Profile contents. A Profile is not a scene copy.

Create the matching YouTube Live event separately
OBS scene organization does not create a YouTube event. Set up the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then connect OBS to that event.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, open the Manage tab and select Schedule Stream.
- Choose Reuse settings to copy a previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, or choose Create new.
- Review the event after creation. Confirm its title, description, privacy, schedule, and stream key; edit any details that should not carry over from the prior event.
- In OBS, enter the intended YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder settings, or select YouTube directly if that option is offered. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the stream preview to appear in Live Control Room for a scheduled event, then click Go live.
YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s password and address. Keep it private, verify that OBS is connected to the intended event, and reset the key through YouTube if it is compromised. Because “Reuse settings” includes the key, check it even when the copied event details look correct. YouTube’s Help pages do not state a publication date; their interface labels may change.

What this does—and does not—automate
These documented features let you reuse OBS scene/source arrangements, reuse OBS output profiles, and copy settings for a new YouTube Live event. They do not establish that duplicating a scene creates a YouTube playlist association, or that a playlist change triggers OBS scene switching. Treat the OBS setup, YouTube event, and playlist as separate pieces unless you have verified a separate automation method for your particular setup.
Troubleshooting
- The copied Profile has the wrong scenes: Profiles do not store scenes. Switch to or set up the needed Scene Collection.
- The Scene Collection has the wrong output settings: Collections do not store output settings. Choose or duplicate the appropriate Profile.
- The new event has an incorrect title, privacy, schedule, or key: YouTube’s “Reuse settings” copies prior metadata, settings, and the stream key. Edit and verify the event before starting the encoder.
- OBS is sending to the wrong event: Check the server URL and stream key in OBS against the intended YouTube event before broadcasting.
- You expected a playlist change to switch the OBS scene: The documented Scene Collection, Profile, and YouTube reuse features do not provide that link. Do not rely on them for playlist-triggered switching.
