A desktop and OBS are not required for this file-based workflow. You still need to check YouTube’s stream health separately; a running FFmpeg process does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu server or virtual machine that can stay online and reach YouTube’s ingest service. An existing always-on Ubuntu machine or a rented cloud VM can work; compare ongoing cost, sustained outbound bandwidth, host control, power and network reliability, and access to logs before choosing.
- FFmpeg built with support for your input, output encoder, and RTMPS. Ubuntu package builds can differ, so verify the capabilities of the FFmpeg you install rather than assuming a particular codec or protocol is available.
- A video file, or a playlist workflow you have checked for your specific media. The account running FFmpeg must be able to read the files.
- A YouTube Live stream and its RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
This procedure focuses on sending prepared media. Camera capture, hardware encoding, and a universal playlist command are outside what the cited documentation establishes; adapt and test the input stage for your source.
Set the YouTube stream and encoder targets
Get the secure ingest details
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream as appropriate for your channel.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key for that stream. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so confirm you have selected RTMPS. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Handle the stream key like a password. Do not paste a real key into a public command, source repository, or publicly visible log.
Choose a format your connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder-settings page, checked in 2026, recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. For H.264, its listed bitrate guidance is:
| Output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not tested results for your Ubuntu host or network. Choose a bitrate your sustained upload can carry with headroom, then test with representative motion and audio. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. For stereo audio, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build and chosen YouTube settings are compatible before relying on a non-H.264 codec.

Install and verify FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for your Ubuntu release, then inspect the installed build. For example:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -protocols
ffmpeg -encoders
Check that the build provides the input and encoder you plan to use, plus RTMPS support. Package availability and capabilities can vary by Ubuntu release and build; if a required feature is absent, use a suitable build before configuring the service. Ensure the eventual service account can read the media directory.

Send a prerecorded file to YouTube
FFmpeg documents real-time input pacing with -re and sending through the FLV muxer. Use the RTMPS endpoint and key you copied from Live Control Room. The following is a pattern, not a universal tested Ubuntu command; replace the placeholders and verify the file’s streams, codecs, and output settings.
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrative output targets 720p30 H.264 at 8 Mbps, with a 60-frame GOP corresponding to two seconds at 30 fps. It does not resize or guarantee that the input is 720p30; inspect and, if needed, explicitly scale and set the output frame rate to match your intended format. The fixed video bitrate options illustrate CBR-style configuration, but confirm actual encoder behavior for your build and check YouTube’s incoming stream indicators. Never publish a command containing a real key.

The example sends one file. A continuous schedule or loop needs a deliberate input strategy. FFmpeg’s official protocol documentation describes its real-time input and FLV patterns, but there is no single universally certified playlist command. When looping or concatenating files, validate timestamps, duration handling, transitions, audio/video synchronization, and behavior at file boundaries with your actual media before leaving it unattended.
Keep FFmpeg running with systemd
A service manager can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart a process that exits. This supervises the local process; it cannot ensure YouTube ingest or a healthy viewer-facing broadcast. Run the service as an unprivileged account and keep the key out of the unit file where practical. One approach is a root-readable environment file:

sudo install -m 600 -o root -g root /dev/null /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
sudoedit /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
Put the stream destination in that file, for example as STREAM_URL, and restrict access to it. Anyone who can read the URL containing the key may be able to use the stream key. Create a dedicated service account and grant it read access to the media and environment it needs. Then create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service:
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube Live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /srv/video/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv ${STREAM_URL}
Restart=always
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Adjust the executable path, account, media path, input plan, and encoder parameters for your host. This example is an operational template, not a tested service unit. In particular, validate how your systemd version expands the environment variable in ExecStart and ensure the URL is not exposed through service inspection or logs. A more restrictive secret-handling arrangement may be appropriate for your environment.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
systemctl status youtube-stream.service
journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f
Use the status and journal to diagnose the local process. Keep access to the host’s logs and a recovery path; a service showing active only establishes that systemd sees a running process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream and monitor both ends
- Start the encoder while watching its logs for input, encoding, and connection errors.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream and inspect its status, stream-health messages, and preview before relying on it.
- Test representative sections of the media, including audio, motion, and any playlist transitions. Check that the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval produce a healthy ingest.
- Continue to monitor both the local service and YouTube’s receiving indicators. YouTube documents stream states such as active, ready, and inactive, and health issues that can flag configuration problems. A local restart policy and platform health checks address different failure points.
YouTube’s ingest health documentation includes problems such as unsupported codecs, missing audio or video, excessive audio channels, bitrate issues, and keyframe intervals longer than four seconds. Its API reference also defines videoIngestionStarved for insufficient incoming video, which can cause viewer buffering. If that appears, inspect FFmpeg logs and the host’s CPU and network capacity as diagnostic leads; the status alone does not identify a particular root cause.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| SSL error or connection timeout | Whether you copied the RTMPS URL, rather than the default RTMP URL, and whether the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. | Use the correct RTMPS endpoint. YouTube says to try port 443 if an SSL error remains while the server URL is correct. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. |
| YouTube flags a configuration issue | Codec support, presence of both audio and video, audio channel count, bitrate, and keyframe interval. | Match the encoder output to YouTube’s current settings guidance and correct the specific health warning. |
| YouTube reports sparse or insufficient video | FFmpeg logs, encoder load, and whether the host can sustain the selected output rate. | Investigate CPU and network capacity, reduce output demands if needed, then test again and verify YouTube’s receiving status. |
| systemd says active but viewers report a bad or missing stream | YouTube’s ingest status and stream-health indicators, not only the local process state. | Use the platform’s health messages to distinguish ingest problems from local process supervision; restarting FFmpeg alone does not establish a healthy broadcast. |
| The stream stops at a file boundary or drifts out of sync | Playlist/concat timestamps, file durations, codec differences, transitions, and audio/video synchronization. | Rework and test the input/playlist strategy with the exact files. A single command is not guaranteed to handle every playlist correctly. |
Choose where Ubuntu runs
| Option | Best fit | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Existing always-on Ubuntu machine | You already have a host you can leave online and administer. | Account for power, home-network reliability, sustained upload capacity, and how you will recover access to logs and the machine. |
| Rented Ubuntu VPS or cloud VM | You do not want a computer at home to remain on. | Compare recurring cost, outbound bandwidth terms, reliability, host control, and operational access. No provider-specific price or uptime guarantee is established here. |
A cloud VM is optional, not a requirement of the FFmpeg-to-YouTube method. YouTube’s docs establish ingest settings; they do not establish a maximum continuous-broadcast duration, long-stream archive retention behavior, or any particular provider’s uptime or bandwidth guarantees. Check current YouTube policy and the chosen host’s specifications for those questions.
Or let it run in the cloud
