Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS, add the videos as a playlist, choose ordered or shuffled playback, and send the OBS output to a YouTube broadcast. Keeping file management, playback, encoding, and YouTube delivery as separate steps makes a large library easier to audit and troubleshoot.
1. Organize the video library before building the playlist
A playlist is only as useful as the files and order behind it. Give each video a filename that helps you identify its subject and intended place in the stream. A practical pattern is Series - Topic - 001 - Title.mp4; use sequence numbers where a specific order matters.
- Group files into folders by series, subject, or intended program block.
- Keep a simple inventory with each filename, its title or topic, and its intended sequence. This makes it easier to spot missing or duplicate entries.
- Split a very large catalog into themed playlists when that makes review and scheduling easier.
- Keep a backup of important source videos. An external drive is one possible storage option, but the right capacity and type depend on your library; there is no established drive requirement for this workflow.
This is organizational advice, not an OBS requirement. OBS documents playlist playback but does not prescribe folder naming, directory structure, or a maximum playlist size.
2. Build a local playlist in OBS Studio
Install the required software
OBS Studio’s VLC Video source is the documented way to play a playlist of local video and other media files. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add and check the playlist
- Open OBS and select the scene where the videos should appear.
- In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video Source. If that option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Create or select the source, then add the files you want in its playlist. Arrange them in the intended sequence and check the list against your inventory.
- Choose whether the playlist should Loop after its last item or Shuffle into randomized playback. Use ordered playback when sequence matters; shuffle only when any order is acceptable.
- Set the source’s behavior when it is not visible in the scene. OBS documents options to continue, pause, or stop playback while hidden. Choose deliberately: stopping or pausing can change what happens when the source becomes visible again.
- Preview the scene and check that the first video, audio, and transitions between files behave as expected.
OBS does not document an automatic “watch this folder and add new files” feature or a playlist-size ceiling in its media-source guidance. For a changing collection, update and review the playlist yourself rather than assuming new files will be picked up automatically.
3. Connect OBS playback to a YouTube live broadcast
The local playlist and the YouTube live event are separate parts of the setup. The playlist source plays the files; OBS encodes and sends the resulting audio-video feed; YouTube presents the broadcast to viewers. Google’s documentation distinguishes a liveBroadcast event from the incoming liveStream feed and describes binding them. It also documents an ongoing 24/7 feed as a use case: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

- Set up a live broadcast in YouTube Studio and obtain the stream connection details for your encoder.
- In OBS, configure the YouTube service and enter the stream key or other connection details YouTube provides. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel’s stream.
- In OBS, confirm that the video canvas and output match the video you intend to send. A playlist does not set the encoder’s output quality by itself.
- Start the OBS stream and confirm that the broadcast is receiving the feed before relying on it for unattended playback.
For YouTube’s general encoder workflow, the platform recommends RTMPS. Its recommended resolution and bitrate settings vary by codec and frame rate, so use the current values on YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate page when configuring OBS. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, test with representative audio and moving video, and monitor stream health during the event.
4. Test the full run, not just the first file
Before leaving a stream unattended, test enough of the playlist to catch problems that a single-file preview cannot reveal. Check that later items play, audio is present and at a suitable level, the order is right, and the loop or shuffle behavior matches your plan. Confirm that the stream remains healthy while OBS is sending it.

If delivery fails, distinguish a playback issue from an encoder or YouTube connection issue. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference describes stream state and health fields, including configuration issues; these can help identify whether the problem is with the incoming feed rather than the local playlist.
5. Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS. For 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.
- A video does not play: Check that the file still exists at the listed path and plays in your media player. If files were moved or renamed after the playlist was built, update the playlist entries.
- The wrong video plays next: Review the playlist sequence and confirm that shuffle is off if order matters.
- The playlist stops at the last item: Enable looping if it should begin again from the start. Confirm the setting by testing through the end of the playlist.
- Playback changes when you switch scenes: Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior. It can be set to continue, pause, or stop while not visible.
- OBS plays video but YouTube does not receive it: Check the stream key and connection settings, then inspect YouTube’s stream health. Local playback working does not prove the feed is reaching YouTube.
- The YouTube feed is unstable: Test the available upload connection and use a bitrate it can sustain. Recheck YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload your videos, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud; it does not stream a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
