To replace what viewers see without ending an active YouTube event, change the media source in the encoder or cloud playout service that is sending the feed. Keep that system connected to YouTube with the event’s existing server URL and stream key. YouTube’s documented instructions do not describe a universal Live Control Room button for swapping a file midstream, so the exact steps depend on the software or service producing your stream.
Where to change the video
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder. The encoder uses the YouTube server URL and stream key to send that feed; the video file or playlist is selected in the encoder or playout system. YouTube documents editing stream details in its settings, but that is not the same as changing the live video input. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions and stream settings guidance.
The practical implication is to switch the source at the system creating the outgoing feed, not to look for a file-swap command in YouTube Studio. That conclusion follows from YouTube’s documented encoder workflow; its cited help pages do not provide vendor-specific source-switch steps or guarantee a seamless transition.
Replace the file without ending the event
- Identify the feed producer. Determine whether the active video comes from software on a computer, a standalone hardware encoder, or a cloud playout service. YouTube describes software and hardware encoder options and lists OBS among the software choices in its encoder guidance.
- Prepare the replacement in that system. Add the new file or update the playlist before switching if the system allows it. Check that the replacement’s format, audio, and aspect ratio suit the current production settings. YouTube’s cited instructions do not set requirements for preparing a file specifically for a midstream replacement.
- Switch the source while maintaining the feed. Use the encoder or playout service’s source controls to select the replacement, leaving its connection and outgoing transmission to YouTube active. Check the encoder preview, then verify picture and sound on the public stream. Exact controls vary by product; these are workflow principles, not tested instructions for a particular encoder.
- Do not stop transmission to make the change. YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Stopping the encoder’s content transmission ends the stream rather than merely replacing its source. Consult YouTube’s instructions before making changes to the active event.
- Plan for the archive separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited help article does not establish the archive outcome for every broadcast longer than that, including a 24/7 stream.
What viewers may experience during a switch
A source change affects what the encoder sends; YouTube’s stream key and server URL route that feed to the event. A metadata edit changes stream details, not the incoming video. YouTube also describes DVR, which lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream, but its cited guidance does not explain how viewer playback positions behave when the encoder changes source. Do not assume everyone will see the replacement at the same point or that the transition will be seamless.

Live Redirect is not a substitute for changing the source inside the current event. YouTube describes it as sending viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current stream ends. See YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.
Choose the system that will keep producing the feed
| Approach | How a replacement is handled | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | Select the replacement file or playlist in the software that is sending the feed. YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software. | You manage the computer, encoder session, media files, and internet connection. YouTube’s documentation establishes the category, not a specific OBS midstream procedure. |
| Hardware encoder | Use the encoder’s own source or playlist controls, if supported by your setup. | YouTube describes standalone hardware encoders, but replacing a prerecorded file does not by itself establish that buying hardware is necessary. |
| Cloud playout | Change the source or playlist in the hosted service while it continues sending the feed. | YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded video and says its listing does not require a dedicated PC. Confirm current features and pricing with the provider; YouTube’s listing is not a comparative performance assessment. |
| StreamNeo | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. | StreamNeo is the first option to consider if you want an always-on YouTube stream without keeping a computer running: any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free. |
Troubleshooting a replacement that does not appear
- The stream ends: Check whether the encoder or playout system stopped sending content. YouTube says stopping the encoder transmission ends the stream; changing metadata in Studio does not replace the feed.
- The old video remains visible: Confirm that the replacement was selected in the system actually producing the outgoing feed, rather than only changing stream details in YouTube Studio. Verify the encoder preview and then the public stream.
- The replacement has no sound or the picture looks wrong: Recheck the replacement file’s audio and aspect ratio against the production settings. YouTube’s cited help does not specify file-preparation rules for this particular operation.
- The change is not seamless for viewers: A seamless transition is not guaranteed by the cited YouTube instructions. Plan for a visible or audible change, and avoid promising identical playback positions for viewers using DVR.
- The archive is missing or unexpected: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. It does not settle archive behavior for every longer broadcast.
- You need to hand viewers to another destination: Live Redirect applies after the current stream ends; it does not swap the source within the active event.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
