YouTube Encoder Keeps Reconnecting After a VPS Network Reset: Recovery Settings

YouTube Encoder Keeps Reconnecting After a VPS Network Reset: Recovery Settings
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube encoder keeps reconnecting after a VPS network reset, first confirm the VPS is back online, then let the encoder retry with automatic reconnect enabled. Check that it is still sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and verify the incoming video, audio, and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Reconnect attempts alone do not prove the broadcast has recovered.

Recover the stream in this order

  1. Confirm VPS connectivity. Check your hosting provider’s status panel and verify the VPS itself has network connectivity using instructions for your operating system and network configuration. The right commands depend on the provider, OS, and network manager, so there is no safe universal command to give here.
  2. Keep a healthy encoder running. If the encoder process is still running, avoid restarting it reflexively. Check that automatic reconnect is enabled and review the retry delay and maximum retries. These controls govern attempts after an output connection is lost; they cannot repair a broken VPS-to-YouTube route.
  3. Verify the YouTube destination. Confirm the encoder is configured with the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guidance explains where to enter these values and how to reset a key if necessary: YouTube live streaming encoder setup. Reset a key only if it is incorrect or may have been compromised, not as a routine reconnect step.
  4. Check the encoder and YouTube. Review the encoder log for connection errors, then open Live Control Room and confirm that video and audio are arriving, the preview is visible, and stream health is acceptable. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. If it still retries, investigate the path. Check whether the VPS can consistently reach the configured YouTube ingest destination, and whether its available upload capacity can sustain the stream. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as signs of a network issue between the host and remote ingest server: OBS dropped frames and connection issues.

Set encoder reconnect controls

OBS Studio

OBS versions may differ in the location and wording of reconnect controls. In the installed build, open Settings and look under Advanced for the network or automatic-reconnect options. Enable automatic reconnect, then choose a retry delay and maximum retry count appropriate for the length of the interruption you can tolerate. A secondary OBS guide describes these controls, but labels and locations are version-dependent: OBS automatic reconnect guide. Check your current interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.

A higher retry limit can give a brief provider-side outage more time to clear, but repeated attempts cannot restore a VPS network path that is still down. Treat retry controls as a way to resume attempts when connectivity returns, not as a guarantee that the same YouTube broadcast will continue uninterrupted.

Other encoders

For an encoder other than OBS, find its output or streaming connection settings and look for automatic reconnect, retry interval, or retry limit controls. Because the encoder is unspecified, consult the documentation for the installed software and version before changing values. Keep the process running only if it is healthy and its destination settings are correct.

Use YouTube-compatible output settings

If you need to rebuild the encoder profile after the reset, follow YouTube’s current guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not apply one number to every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations and test the configuration before the next broadcast.

Common causes and fixes

What you see Likely area to check What to do
Retries continue immediately after the reset The VPS may not yet have a working route to YouTube ingest. Check provider status and VPS connectivity first; then retry and inspect the encoder log.
The VPS is online but the encoder cannot connect The route to the configured ingest destination, or the destination settings, may be wrong. Verify the stream URL and key, then investigate VPS-to-ingest connectivity.
The encoder reports a connection but YouTube has no usable preview The incoming feed may not be healthy even though connection attempts occurred. Check Live Control Room for incoming video and audio, preview, and stream-health messages.
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections persist Network instability or insufficient upload capacity may be affecting the VPS-to-ingest path. Investigate the route and confirm the available upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate.
YouTube does not accept the encoder output The profile may not match YouTube’s recommended protocol or encoding settings. Use RTMP or RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and a bitrate suited to the codec, resolution, and frame rate.

What reconnect settings cannot guarantee

Automatic reconnect does not by itself establish that the original live broadcast resumed, that YouTube will retain the same stream session, or that retries continue indefinitely. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls are separate stream-lifecycle settings; do not treat them as proof of recovery after a VPS outage. Confirm the actual incoming feed and health in Live Control Room before considering the broadcast back.
