A switch from 1080p to 720p is a good reason to recheck your encoder, but it does not identify the cause of a YouTube stream-health warning on its own. Open the event’s Live Control Room, read the exact Stream status message, then verify what your encoder is actually sending: resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Check CBR, keyframe interval and upload bandwidth before changing settings again.
Start with the exact Stream status message
In YouTube Studio, open the event in Live Control Room and look at Stream status. YouTube provides specific error messages and instructions there; the wording is the first diagnostic clue. Preserve the full message when troubleshooting rather than assuming the resolution change caused the warning. Without that text and details of the encoder output, the cause cannot be diagnosed from the change alone. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream
Verify the signal your encoder is sending
Check the encoder’s active output, not just the settings displayed in the event setup. Confirm the outgoing video is 1280×720 if you intended to switch to 720p, and note its frame rate, codec and bitrate. A preset or profile change may not have altered the encoder output as expected.
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key. If you deliberately selected a resolution manually, confirm that the encoder output matches it; otherwise, YouTube recommends automatic detection. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings

Compare the live bitrate with the codec and frame rate
Use the live-ingestion recommendations below, which YouTube Help lists for RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest. They are configuration guidance, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that a particular bitrate will clear a warning. The recommended bitrate differs by codec; these 720p targets are the same for 30 and 60 fps in YouTube’s table.
| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current live-ingestion recommendations; the source does not display a publication date. The 1080p values are useful for comparing the previous output, but they are not the 720p targets. First establish the actual codec and frame rate, then compare the encoder’s bitrate to the matching row. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings

Check the general encoder settings
- Bitrate mode: Set encoding to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube’s guidance says not to exceed four seconds.
- Codec: Confirm the encoder uses a supported video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1.
- Frame rate: Keep it at 60 fps or below, and verify it matches the intended output.

Make sure your upload connection has headroom
Run an outbound speed test under conditions similar to the live event. Compare the measured upload capacity with the stream’s bitrate and account for other devices, services or simultaneous streams using the connection. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom and notes that upload speed may be lower than download speed; a shared office connection may also have competing traffic. A download-speed result alone does not establish that your upload is sufficient. YouTube Help: Check your upload speed

There is no single internet-speed figure that can be prescribed without knowing your stream bitrate, any backup stream and other network use. If the connection is unstable or crowded, retest with competing traffic reduced before concluding the encoder settings are at fault.
Do not use upload-video bitrates for a live encoder
YouTube publishes separate recommendations for uploading finished videos. Its upload table lists 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates. Those are upload-video figures, not live-ingestion targets, so use the live table above when configuring an encoder. The upload guidance page does not display a publication date. Troubleshoot in a controlled order
- Record the warning exactly. Open Stream status and retain the complete message and any instructions it provides.
- Confirm the event’s resolution mode. Check whether the stream key uses automatic detection or a manually selected resolution; if manual, make the encoder output agree with that selection.
- Inspect the outgoing signal. Verify dimensions, frame rate, codec and bitrate in the encoder’s active output or status display.
- Compare bitrate to the right row. Use the live-ingestion figures for the actual codec and frame rate, not the separate upload-video table.
- Check CBR and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Test upload capacity with headroom. Compare outbound capacity against stream bitrate plus other traffic; YouTube recommends 20% room.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Observe Stream status after each adjustment so you can tell whether the warning changes.
If the warning remains, the most useful details for further diagnosis are the exact status text, encoder and codec, frame rate, active bitrate, whether resolution is automatic or manual, and a realistic upload-speed result. There is no published figure establishing how often warnings specifically follow a 1080p-to-720p switch or what share are caused by bitrate, network conditions or encoder mismatch.
