Those checks can help narrow down whether the trouble is with YouTube, your device, or the mobile connection. Buffering by itself does not prove packet loss or show that Vi is responsible.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Buffering, stuttering, playback errors, or a sudden drop in video quality are symptoms, not diagnoses. They can arise from the video or YouTube service, the app or phone, or the connection between your phone and the internet. A speed test measures throughput at a particular moment; it does not establish packet loss or guarantee that a video stream will remain stable.
Before changing settings, note when and where the problem happens, your phone model and operating system, whether you use the YouTube app or a browser, the displayed cellular network mode and signal indication, the selected video quality, and whether the video is live or on demand. Also note whether other apps or websites stall. If the problem comes and goes, repeat the checks at another time. YouTube recommends trying a different internet connection when troubleshooting buffering (YouTube streaming and video troubleshooting).
Diagnose the problem in order
1. Compare the same video across connections
Replay the same video on Wi-Fi or another available internet connection. Then, while using Vi, check whether other apps and websites load and play normally.

- If only YouTube has trouble, try a different video and compare the app with a browser. The app, a particular video, or the YouTube service path may be involved.
- If several services stall on Vi but work over Wi-Fi, the mobile connection, local radio conditions, or congestion become more plausible. This still does not prove packet loss or identify where the fault lies.
- If the same video fails across devices and connections, a video- or service-side issue becomes more plausible. Try another video and check again later.
- If the problem appears on only one phone, investigate its app, settings, or SIM/device configuration.
These are clues rather than definitive tests: a problem on the route to YouTube can make a YouTube-specific issue look different from a general connection problem.
2. Lower playback quality and observe the result
In the YouTube player, open the quality controls and manually choose a lower resolution. If playback stabilizes, available throughput may be limiting the video at its previous quality. Record the selected quality and whether the change helped; it does not show that packet loss was the cause.

YouTube publishes the following approximate sustained-speed guidance for common resolutions. These are not packet-loss thresholds, guarantees, or measurements of Vi’s network (YouTube video-error troubleshooting).

A speed test can provide context, but it is a snapshot rather than proof of stable throughput throughout playback.

3. Check the app and phone
- Close and reopen YouTube, or reload the video in your browser.
- Check for an available app or browser update, then restart the phone.
- On Android, consider clearing YouTube’s cache through the phone’s system settings.
- Confirm mobile data is enabled for YouTube and review any data restrictions that may apply.
- Inspect DNS settings only if you have reason to think they were changed. These checks can help identify an app or device issue; they do not establish a carrier fault.
4. Refresh and check the Vi connection
Briefly toggle airplane mode or restart the mobile connection, then try again. Confirm that your account has data available and consider whether the issue is limited to a particular location or time. Vi directs customers with data problems to its network troubleshooting and support information; its app also offers speed checking. Support routes can change, so use the current contact options on Vi’s page. Ask whether there is an incident or local network issue, and share what you observed rather than assuming a cause or expecting a particular repair.
5. Change APN settings only if there is a reason
Do not begin by editing the access point name (APN). If mobile data configuration appears incorrect, first check current Vi guidance and your phone’s instructions. Vi’s APN FAQ lists “www” for Android and “iphone” for iPhone, but its menu paths or values may not match every device and operating-system version. Verify the current instructions before making a change; an APN edit is not a universal fix for unstable video.

When and how to escalate to Vi
If the problem persists, contact Vi through its current support channels and provide observations that can help narrow down the issue. Avoid posting a full address publicly; give an approximate location directly to support.
- Approximate location and the dates and times when the issue occurred.
- Phone make and model, operating system, YouTube app or browser, and cellular network mode.
- Whether the affected video was live or on demand, the selected quality, and whether lowering it changed playback.
- Whether other services stalled on Vi and whether the same video worked on Wi-Fi or another connection.
- Any repeatable speed or packet-loss measurements, including the test method and conditions.
A ping or traceroute result alone is not conclusive evidence about YouTube traffic: routing differs, and intermediate devices may deprioritise or ignore ICMP responses. Vi’s article on improving mobile internet speed discusses general measures such as resetting network settings. Treat that as a later step: review the phone’s reset prompt first, because a network reset can remove saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings.
