YouTube says the key tells an encoder where to send a feed and lets YouTube accept it. People with access to your channel, computer, OBS settings, or shared diagnostic files may create different exposure risks. YouTube documents some channel-role limits, but the available OBS guidance does not establish whether current local or uploaded OBS logs redact stream keys. Inspect files before sharing; if a key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in your encoder.
What a YouTube stream key reveals
YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s “password and address.” They are credentials entered into encoder software—not public stream URLs. Keep the key out of screenshots, screen shares, chat, and public support posts. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains the key’s purpose and reset flow.
Who can see or reset the key on YouTube?
Access depends on channel permissions, and the ability to monitor a stream is not the same as the ability to reveal or reset its key.
| Role or access | What YouTube documents |
|---|---|
| Viewer | Can view and monitor created streams and see stream settings except the stream key. |
| Editor | Can manage live streams but cannot delete or reset stream keys. |
| Owner or Manager | Can reset a stream key; YouTube’s reset instructions require one of these roles. |
These are the documented distinctions, not proof that every other role’s credential visibility is identical in every channel configuration. YouTube recommends channel permissions instead of sharing the owner’s Google Account password or other sensitive sign-in details. See YouTube’s channel-permissions guidance.

What OBS does—and what its logs establish
OBS has a stream-key field in its settings, with a show/hide control in the interface. That establishes that a manually entered key is part of the OBS configuration context; it does not establish whether the value is absent from every local file, backup, or diagnostic log. OBS’s settings source shows the field and control.
OBS creates a diagnostic log each time it runs and offers instructions for uploading a current or last log when seeking help. The OBS log-upload instructions do not, in the material available, confirm whether current local and uploaded log formats redact YouTube keys. Do not assume logs are safe to publish: inspect the actual file and remove any credential before sharing it.

What “server logs” means here
The available documentation covers OBS diagnostic logs and YouTube’s stream transport, not the contents or retention of YouTube’s internal server logs. It does not establish what those internal logs contain or who can access them. Nor does it show that ordinary channel delegates can read platform server logs. Avoid treating “server logs” as an established place where a key is either exposed or guaranteed to be hidden.
What RTMPS protects
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the stream connection in transit. Use an RTMPS preset or URL when configuring an encoder, following YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance. Transport encryption protects the connection between encoder and YouTube; it does not control who can access the computer or channel settings, nor does it make screenshots or diagnostic files safe to share.

What to do if the key may have leaked
- Reset it in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, go to the Stream tab, and reset the key. YouTube documents that this action requires an Owner or Manager role.
- Update the encoder. Replace the saved key in OBS or the encoder you use with the newly generated value.
- Review channel access. Use delegated channel roles with appropriate permissions instead of sharing account sign-in details.
- Check materials you shared. Inspect diagnostic logs, screenshots, configuration exports, and support posts; remove any credential that appears. This precaution does not assume OBS necessarily writes the key into a log.
- Use RTMPS where supported. Encryption in transit is useful, but it does not replace resetting a credential after suspected exposure.
Or let it run in the cloud

The first day is free with no card, and Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a camera-based live broadcast.
