OBS YouTube Stream Keeps Reconnecting on Windows? Network Checks for India

When OBS reconnects repeatedly, use its dropped-frame counter and YouTube stream health to distinguish network trouble from encoder problems, then test bitrate, Windows settings, Wi-Fi, and your ISP connection.

If OBS keeps disconnecting from YouTube Live, first check whether OBS is actually dropping network frames. Rising dropped frames or a changing connection indicator, alongside connection warnings in YouTube Live Control Room, points to the outbound connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain—not automatically to a faulty OBS installation. Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, then test OBS’s Windows network options, VPN and security software, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, and the router connection one change at a time.

First identify what is failing

During a test stream, watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator, and check the corresponding stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Write down the time of each interruption. YouTube recommends testing before an event with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health.

  • Network drops: If OBS’s network dropped-frame count rises or its connection state changes while YouTube reports connection trouble, investigate the outbound network path and bitrate.
  • Local picture, sound, or performance problems: If the output is already poor before it reaches YouTube, check the encoder, sources, and CPU rather than treating it as a network-only issue.
  • Startup or stream-key error: An error starting a third-party encoder is different from recurring disconnections during an active stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to create a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder for this kind of startup error.

OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Lower bitrate to match stable upload capacity

A speed-test peak or the upload speed advertised on a plan does not establish what your connection can sustain throughout a stream. OBS’s 2024 guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed, but treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee. If connection drops continue, reduce the video bitrate in OBS under Settings → Output, test again, and record whether stability changes.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says to choose a quality that can produce a reliable stream on your connection. Its published H.264 examples include these minimum and recommended bitrates:

H.264 output YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s platform guidance, not a measurement of your home connection or a promise that it can sustain the recommended rate. YouTube’s encoder page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 as codecs; up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you use.

Test OBS’s Windows network settings

OBS documents several options under Settings → Advanced → Network. Change one setting at a time and test after each change so you can tell whether it helped.

  1. Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing, then run a test stream.
  2. Leave Bind to IP at Default.
  3. If the issue remains, try IP Family set to IPv4 Only as an isolation test. If it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
  4. OBS also documents Dynamic Bitrate as a beta option. It can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce dropped frames, but that reduces quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.

These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes. OBS’s instructions are at obsproject.com/kb/stream-connection-troubleshooting.

Isolate Wi-Fi, software, and equipment

After recording a baseline, test likely points of failure without changing several things at once:

  • Wi-Fi versus Ethernet: If the PC uses Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and repeat the test. OBS recommends wired connectivity because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A cable is useful here as a diagnostic: it can isolate the local wireless link, but it cannot fix an ISP route or a YouTube-side fault.
  • VPN: Temporarily disconnect the VPN for a controlled test. Note whether the result changes.
  • Security software: If you suspect it is interfering, test temporarily, then add an OBS exception and re-enable protection if the test points to interference.
  • Network optimization utilities: Check whether software bundled by the PC or network-adapter manufacturer is managing or prioritizing network traffic; test without it if appropriate.
  • Network drivers: Check for current drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  • Router and modem: Restart them and test again. Avoid replacing equipment unless testing points to an equipment fault; OBS advises consulting your ISP if you are unsure about hardware.
  • Other devices: Note whether other devices or services on the same connection show problems at the same time.

What is specific to streaming from India?

The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a special India-only OBS network setting, an active India-wide outage, or a best Indian ISP. The relevant checks are the same: observe OBS and YouTube diagnostics, fit bitrate to stable upload capacity, isolate the local network, and ask the ISP to investigate if the evidence points beyond your PC or home network.

When to contact your ISP

If the disconnections continue after local tests, give your ISP evidence that can help it investigate the line and route. Include:

  • Dates and times of interruptions, with your time zone.
  • Whether OBS’s dropped-frame count rose and what its connection indicator showed.
  • YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages or reported errors.
  • Whether lowering bitrate improved stability.
  • Whether Ethernet worked differently from Wi-Fi, and whether disabling a VPN or network utility changed the result.
  • Connection-test results and whether other devices or services were affected.

OBS notes that an ISP can experience unexpected congestion or make changes along the route. YouTube also advises contacting the ISP when connection testing identifies issues. The results of your tests—not a general claim about Indian providers—are the useful basis for investigating your particular connection.
