FFmpeg YouTube Stream Freezes After a Network Hiccup: Reconnect Options

A practical guide to FFmpeg HTTP reconnect flags, retry limits, EOF behavior, and diagnosing yt-dlp versus FFmpeg failures.

If FFmpeg is reading a direct HTTP media stream, start by placing -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 before -i. Add retry limits that suit the job. Use -reconnect_at_eof 1 only when an endless or live input should reconnect if it reports end-of-file; it can be wrong for a finite video. A YouTube watch-page URL may involve an extractor such as yt-dlp, so first identify whether the failure occurs in URL extraction, downloader handoff, or FFmpeg’s actual media input.

First identify what “freezes” means

A paused picture alone does not tell you whether the network connection dropped. FFmpeg may still be running, waiting for data, retrying, or receiving no usable packets. Inspect its log and timestamps before choosing a reconnect option: look for read errors, reconnect attempts, EOF, HTTP status codes, or continued packet output.

The right fix depends on the failure stage and input type. These HTTP protocol options are not a universal switch for every stalled YouTube workflow, and availability can vary by FFmpeg build.

Start with the direct HTTP input case

If FFmpeg reads a direct HTTP media URL and the connection drops during transfer, try this pattern:

  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30 -reconnect_max_retries 10 -i 'HTTP_MEDIA_URL' -c copy output.mkv

Replace HTTP_MEDIA_URL with the direct media URL, not necessarily the YouTube watch-page URL. Input options belong before the -i they configure. The values 30 seconds and 10 retries are examples for tuning, not universal recommendations or guarantees. An interactive download may need a shorter limit; a long-running process may call for a different retry budget.

-reconnect_delay_max limits an individual reconnect delay, while -reconnect_max_retries bounds the number of attempts. FFmpeg also documents -reconnect_delay_total_max to cap total reconnect delay. Choose limits deliberately so a failed input does not wait longer than your workflow can tolerate.

Choose options by failure stage

Option What it handles When it may fit
-reconnect 1 Reconnect after a disconnect before EOF. A connection drops while media bytes are being read.
-reconnect_streamed 1 Allows reconnects for streamed or non-seekable inputs. The HTTP input is streamed and cannot be sought.
-reconnect_at_eof 1 Treats EOF as an error and reconnects; documented as useful for live or endless streams. A live input can temporarily report EOF and should continue.
-reconnect_on_network_error 1 Reconnects on TCP/TLS errors during connection establishment. Opening the connection fails; this is not a general fix for every mid-stream freeze.
-reconnect_on_http_error '5xx' Reconnects for selected HTTP status codes or classes, including classes such as 4xx or 5xx. The server returned a status that is plausibly transient. Scope retries to relevant responses rather than retrying every error indiscriminately.
-reconnect_delay_max Sets the maximum reconnect delay. You need to bound an individual wait.
-reconnect_max_retries Sets a retry-count limit. You need to bound the number of attempts.
-reconnect_delay_total_max Sets a maximum total reconnect delay. You need an overall wait budget.

Descriptions follow FFmpeg’s protocol documentation and HTTP implementation reference. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg build you actually run.

Handle EOF carefully on live and finite inputs

For a genuinely live or endless HTTP input, test adding -reconnect_at_eof 1 before -i if logs show EOF and reconnecting is the intended behavior. Do not add it blindly to a finite video: a normal end of file could trigger another connection attempt when the file is already complete.

When the input is a YouTube URL

A YouTube watch-page URL can involve an extractor such as yt-dlp rather than being a direct media URL that FFmpeg can read as-is. The extractor may resolve and download media, invoke FFmpeg as an external downloader, or send media through standard output. Those are separate paths, and a freeze can happen before FFmpeg receives media or during FFmpeg’s own read.

  1. Check the command and logs from the start. Identify whether yt-dlp is involved and which process first reports an error or stops producing output.
  2. Identify FFmpeg’s actual input. Determine whether it receives a resolved HTTP media URL, an HLS or DASH playlist, or media from another process. Do not assume the watch-page URL is the input governed by HTTP flags.
  3. Apply protocol options only to the relevant input. If FFmpeg is reading HTTP media directly, place supported HTTP input options before that input’s -i. If extraction or downloader launch is failing, diagnose that stage instead.

The yt-dlp documentation describes YouTube URL handling, FFmpeg use, external downloaders, and standard-output workflows. It does not determine which path your particular command uses; capture the complete command and logs to establish that.

Check your installed FFmpeg version

The online protocol documentation describes current behavior, and FFmpeg’s 8.1 HTTP source reference lists reconnect options and defaults. That does not establish that an older, customized, or differently built binary supports the same options. If FFmpeg reports an unknown option, check ffmpeg -version and consult documentation matching that build before relying on a command copied from a newer installation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

  • Read error or disconnect during transfer: Try -reconnect 1; include -reconnect_streamed 1 when the input is streamed or non-seekable.
  • EOF on an intended endless input: Consider -reconnect_at_eof 1 only if reconnecting at EOF matches the input’s intended behavior.
  • TCP/TLS error while opening: Consider -reconnect_on_network_error 1, which is for connection-establishment errors.
  • HTTP error response: Inspect the status. If retrying is appropriate, scope -reconnect_on_http_error to the relevant code or class; not every HTTP error is temporary.
  • Picture stops but FFmpeg remains active: Check logs and packet timestamps. A visual pause by itself does not establish a network disconnection.
  • Watch URL with yt-dlp: Find the first failing stage—extraction, downloader launch, or FFmpeg input read—before changing FFmpeg protocol flags.
  • Unknown option: Verify the installed version and matching build documentation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube around the clock, rather than repairing a particular FFmpeg input, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
