If OBS keeps trying and failing to reconnect to YouTube, first check whether its dropped-frames counter is rising. Rising dropped frames or an unstable connection status usually point to the network path or a bitrate that exceeds your stable upload capacity. If YouTube instead reports a key, URL, RTMPS, SSL, or timeout error, check the stream destination and credentials. Use the exact OBS and YouTube messages to choose the right branch before changing settings.
Identify whether the problem is your connection or YouTube ingest setup
OBS Project says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. That does not by itself prove your home connection is at fault: the path can also involve Wi-Fi interference, software, equipment, the ISP, or routing beyond your network.

In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection status while YouTube Live Control Room displays Stream health. Note the exact YouTube message and whether OBS still shows local video and audio. YouTube’s health view provides specific status messages and instructions: YouTube stream health.
Lower bitrate if OBS is dropping frames
A stream can disconnect when the network cannot reliably carry the configured bitrate. OBS Project’s 2024 troubleshooting guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: use stable measured upload capacity, not a brief peak, and leave room for other devices and traffic.

- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Reduce Video Bitrate and apply the change.
- Test again under a similar streaming workload, watching whether dropped frames stop increasing and whether YouTube Stream health improves.
YouTube’s published H.264 ingest recommendations, accessed in 2026, include these examples. They are recommendations, not minimum requirements for every stream; choose a bitrate your connection can sustain.

For current supported codecs and other encoder settings, consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates. YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and supports RTMP or RTMPS; the appropriate settings depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, and current YouTube guidance. Test before going live.

Check the network path from your computer to YouTube
Try Ethernet and restart troubled equipment
If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If the modem or router is having connectivity trouble, restart it and test again. If you cannot tell whether equipment is faulty, OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing hardware.
Isolate VPNs, security software, and network utilities
A VPN can introduce an unstable route, while a firewall or antivirus program can interfere with OBS connections. Temporarily disable only the suspected item to test; if that resolves the issue, re-enable security software and create an OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled. Also check for network “boost,” “optimizer,” or prioritization utilities and outdated network drivers. OBS cites Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples, not a complete list.

Review OBS network settings
- Open Settings → Advanced → Network and check that Bind to IP is set to Default.
- On Windows, test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing, then check whether the connection improves.
- You can also test IPv4 Only. If it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
- If you cannot resolve the cause of congestion, try dynamic bitrate as a fallback. It can reduce dropped frames by lowering quality when the connection is congested, but it does not fix the underlying network problem.
Network optimizations and TCP pacing are Windows-specific options in OBS’s guidance. The available controls can differ by platform.
Fix stream-key, URL, RTMPS, SSL, or timeout errors
Use this branch when YouTube’s status message points to encoder startup or ingest configuration, rather than when OBS is clearly losing frames because of an unstable connection.

- Encoder startup or key error: In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream key for the intended stream and update the key in your encoder. Confirm the destination is the intended stream.
- URL or protocol error: Check that the server URL is correct. For an RTMPS error, YouTube says to verify that the URL uses RTMPS rather than RTMP and that the encoder supports RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP protected with TLS/SSL encryption.
- SSL error: Check RTMPS support and, as YouTube advises, try specifying port 443.
- Timeout: Verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports the selected protocol.
Follow the error-specific instructions in YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide and its RTMPS guidance. Replacing a key or URL is appropriate for a setup error, not a general cure for packet loss or insufficient upload capacity.

- If dropped frames continue after testing bitrate, wired networking, and relevant software settings, test outbound connectivity and contact your ISP. Congestion or routing problems may be outside your computer and home network.
- If your outbound connection appears stable but YouTube Stream health remains unhealthy, save the OBS log and the exact YouTube status message before contacting support.
- Do not assume reinstalling OBS or buying networking hardware will fix the issue. Match the next step to the error and the tests already performed.
