To find out why a YouTube live stream process stopped on Ubuntu, first identify how the encoder was launched, then compare its application and supervisor logs with kernel messages and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health errors. The YouTube player going offline alone does not show whether the encoder exited or YouTube stopped receiving usable video.
Capture the incident details before changing anything
Write down when the stream disappeared, including the time zone; the Ubuntu release; the encoder and version; and whether the machine rebooted. If the incident is still under investigation, capture the relevant logs before restarting services or rotating logs. Use one time zone when comparing local records with YouTube’s messages.
The available evidence can narrow the cause, but it cannot identify what happened on a particular host without that host’s logs. If records have been rotated or were never captured, the original cause may remain unknown.
Find the encoder’s logs based on how it was started
If systemd manages the encoder

systemctl status <unit>
sudo journalctl -u <unit> --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pager
Look at the final application output and any exit status, signal, restart count, or supervisor message. The service-specific journal is useful only if that systemd unit managed the encoder. Ubuntu’s documentation uses journalctl -u lxd as an example of inspecting a service’s journal (Ubuntu LXD troubleshooting).
If it ran in a shell, container, or another supervisor
For an interactive launch, check the terminal output or the logging destination configured by the launcher. For a container or another process supervisor, inspect that environment’s logs as well as any application log. A systemd journal may not contain the complete record for a process it did not manage.
Check kernel and host evidence
Inspect kernel messages around the incident for memory pressure or OOM events, device resets, kernel errors, and security denials:

sudo dmesg -T | tail -n 250
sudo journalctl -k --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pager
dmesg displays the kernel ring buffer. On Ubuntu 20.10 and later, access is restricted by default to privileged users with CAP_SYSLOG; using sudo is appropriate when you are authorized to administer the host (Ubuntu kernel protections).

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check for AppArmor denials
AppArmor denial entries can include the operation, profile, requested path or name, and process ID or command. Ubuntu’s guide says denials appear in dmesg and other logs that collect kernel messages. However, explicit AppArmor denies do not produce a log entry, so finding no denial message does not conclusively rule out policy involvement (Ubuntu AppArmor debugging).
Account for release and edition differences
Ubuntu 22.04 release notes say systemd-oomd shipped by default on Ubuntu Desktop to help avoid overload before the kernel OOM killer acts, and mention oomctl for checking OOMD status. This is specific to that release and edition; do not assume it applies to every Ubuntu installation (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release notes).

Compare local evidence with YouTube stream health
Open the relevant stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health messages for the incident window. YouTube says those messages include timestamps and distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow errors (Live streaming error messages). Match their timestamps to the local journal and encoder output.
An encoder exit and an ingestion or stream-format error are different observations. If YouTube reports an ingest or format issue while the encoder is still running, examine the encoder’s output, stream URL or protocol, codec, and network path. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions); a platform error alone does not establish why a local Ubuntu process exited.

Test the network when the process is still running
If the encoder remains alive but YouTube stopped receiving usable content, investigate outbound upload capacity, packet loss or interruptions, and recent network changes. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom, and warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream (YouTube streaming tips).

Distinguish a planned stop from an unexplained termination
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping content from the encoder; they also say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). In local records, an explicit operator or systemd stop, a scheduled shutdown, an abrupt signal, a crash, resource termination, and a host reboot may leave different evidence. Give more weight to the process exit status and supervisor event when deciding whether the local process terminated than to the player going offline by itself.
Troubleshoot by what the evidence shows
| Observation | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| The service is inactive or reports an exit | Check the unit journal and final encoder output for an exit status, signal, or restart event. |
| The encoder is still running, but YouTube reports an error | Compare the timestamped stream-health message with encoder output, stream configuration, and network evidence. |
| Kernel messages show memory or OOM activity | Correlate those messages with the process exit time and, where applicable, check whether the host uses systemd-oomd. |
| Kernel messages show an AppArmor denial | Inspect the logged operation, profile, requested resource, and process details; absence of a denial log does not rule policy involvement out. |
| The host rebooted or logs are missing | Use remaining supervisor, application, and YouTube timestamps to narrow the window; without retained records, a definitive cause may not be recoverable. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose an Ubuntu encoder, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
