Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOBS usually appears to skip a video because the playlist is shuffled, a source restarts after becoming visible again, or a media entry cannot play—not because YouTube’s live broadcast has skipped the OBS playlist. For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source; then check its shuffle, loop, and visibility settings before changing anything in YouTube.
First, identify which playlist is involved
Here, “playlist” means the media files OBS plays into your broadcast. YouTube also uses the word for a rolling playlist of HLS stream segments, but that is part of stream delivery—not the list of videos you arranged in OBS. Changing OBS’s media playlist and troubleshooting YouTube’s ingestion are different tasks. OBS’s Media Sources guide covers the sources that play files; YouTube’s HLS guide covers delivery.
Check the source and playlist settings
Choose the source for the job
OBS’s Media Source plays an individual media file and has a Loop option. For a playlist of multiple files, use VLC Video, which supports playlists and has separate Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist settings. VLC must be installed; OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Confirm order and looping
- If videos should play in list order, turn Shuffle off. With Shuffle on, OBS randomizes the files; the next title may not be the one you expected.
- If the list should start again after its last item, enable Loop Playlist. Without it, do not expect the playlist to repeat indefinitely.
- For one file that should repeat, use Media Source and enable Loop rather than building a multi-item VLC playlist.
Check what happens when the source is hidden
VLC Video’s default visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If you switch scenes or hide the source, playback may stop and begin again from the first item when the source reappears. That can look like a playlist reset or a skipped item, but it is not the same as the YouTube broadcast ending. If the video should retain its place or continue in the background while hidden, select a pause/unpause or always-play behavior instead. The setting and its effect are described in OBS’s Media Sources guide and Sources Guide; OBS’s source code distinguishes source activation and deactivation from stopping the outgoing stream.

Diagnose a playlist that still stops or misses an item
- Inspect the list. Confirm that each entry points to the intended file and that its path and filename are correct.
- Play suspect files directly in VLC. If a particular file fails there, it is a more useful lead than changing YouTube settings.
- Test a smaller known-good playlist. If it works, add the other entries back individually to isolate the problem file or entry.
- Check VLC diagnostics if playback repeatedly stops at the same item. A 2019 OBS forum reply suggested looking at VLC messages for a file error in one user’s large shuffled playlist. That is a troubleshooting lead from an individual report, not proof of a universal cause. Read the forum discussion.
- Verify the VLC installation and architecture. If VLC Video is missing or behaving unexpectedly, make sure VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. See OBS’s guide.
If the reset happens after editing a live playlist
Adding an item while a YouTube Live session was active reportedly reset playback to the first video in one user’s setup. That single report does not establish that live edits always interrupt playback, or that the behavior applies to current versions and every configuration. Test playlist edits before relying on them during a public broadcast. See the user report.
Quick setting guide
| Goal | OBS source or setting | Expected behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video | Media Source; enable Loop | Repeats that file. |
| Play several files in a fixed order | VLC Video; disable Shuffle; enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat | Plays list order and repeats after the final item if looping is enabled. |
| Randomize several files | VLC Video; enable Shuffle | Randomizes the order; the next item is not predictable from the list position. |
| Keep playback moving or preserve its place while hidden | VLC Video visibility behavior; choose always play or pause/unpause instead of stop/restart | Avoids the default stop-and-restart behavior when the source is hidden. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos rotating on a YouTube channel without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping in the cloud, so nothing at home has to stay on; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
