If fast scenes look blocky in your YouTube stream, first check that OBS is using a bitrate suited to your codec, resolution and frame rate—and that your connection can sustain it. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 8 Mbps for 720p60. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then test with representative movement. If the connection is stable but motion still pixelates, test a lower output resolution or frame rate.
Start with the right YouTube bitrate
Fast motion changes more of the image from frame to frame, making it harder to encode cleanly at a fixed bitrate. YouTube’s recommended rates depend on codec, resolution and frame rate; they are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every scene will look clean or that your upload connection can sustain the stream.
| Output and codec | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p60 AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps |
| 720p60 AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026; check its live encoder settings for the full, current table and any revisions. YouTube’s guide covers RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1, and up to 60 fps.
Set rate control and keyframes
In OBS, set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds for YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and specifies a maximum of four seconds. Confirm both settings in the encoder controls before changing bitrate; a higher rate alone does not correct every configuration problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make bitrate fit your connection
Your OBS bitrate must fit both YouTube’s recommendation for the selected output and the upload capacity your connection can reliably maintain. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, but this is a heuristic, not a stability guarantee. Leave enough capacity for connection variation and other upload activity. If OBS reports dropped frames, do not raise bitrate to chase sharper motion: reduce it to a sustainable level and diagnose the connection.
Distinguish compression artifacts from dropped frames
Pixel blocks concentrated in fast-moving scenes can point to compression limits: more visual change has to fit into the same bitrate. Dropped frames are different. OBS says they indicate the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A stream can also have more than one issue, so assess the image and OBS’s dropped-frame indicator separately.

- Blockiness during movement, with no dropped frames: after confirming the codec-appropriate bitrate and stable connection, test a lower output resolution or FPS.
- Dropped frames: check upload stability and reduce the video bitrate to a level the connection can sustain.
- Local recording is also poor, or OBS reports encoding/rendering overload: investigate encoder and system load. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but encoder generation affects quality at a given bitrate; the symptom alone does not establish that new hardware is needed.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats. Your ingest settings still matter, but viewers’ available quality options and playback depend on YouTube’s transcodes and on their device and network. A viewer seeing a low-quality rendition does not by itself prove that your OBS bitrate is wrong.
Change settings in a controlled test
- Record your baseline. Note OBS output resolution, FPS, codec, rate control, bitrate and keyframe interval so you can compare changes rather than guessing.
- Check the ingest settings. Confirm CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Verify that your bitrate matches YouTube’s current recommendation for your codec, resolution and FPS. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264—not the older 6 Mbps advice sometimes repeated in forum posts.
- Test privately or otherwise off-air to the public. Use movement and audio representative of the actual program. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health; see its encoder guidance.
- Check OBS dropped frames during the test. If frames drop, address network stability and lower bitrate to a reliable level before evaluating image compression.
- If the connection is stable, reduce output resolution and test again. A lower resolution means less image data must fit into the available bitrate. Compare the same moving scene at the same frame rate where practical.
- If needed, test lower FPS. This reduces the number of frames encoded each second, but motion may look less smooth. Choose based on the material: preserve frame rate where smooth motion matters, or compare a lower rate if the stream’s visual style allows it.
- Check the encoder and system load if the problem remains. If local recordings also look poor or OBS shows encoding/rendering overload, investigate those symptoms separately rather than assuming bitrate is the sole cause.
OBS’s streaming guide covers output setup and checking that the computer can sustain the selected FPS. Its dropped frames guide explains connection-related symptoms, and its encoder overload guide addresses encoding and rendering load. High-motion scenes are especially demanding to compress, as described in the OBS community’s NVENC guide.

When a lower resolution or FPS is the better trade-off
If upload capacity is limited, increasing bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain can exchange compression artifacts for unstable delivery. If the connection is healthy and the stream still looks blocky in motion at the recommended rate, test lower output resolution first when preserving motion smoothness is important. If reduced resolution is not acceptable, compare a lower frame rate instead, understanding that movement will look less smooth. There is no universal best choice for every game, documentary, encoder and connection.
OBS’s Video settings include output (scaled) resolution and common FPS. Change one setting at a time, repeat the same representative motion test, and keep the option that produces the best balance of detail, smoothness and reliability for your program.
