OBS YouTube Stream Bitrate Settings for a Shared Internet Connection

YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. Learn how to test shared upload capacity, set OBS and troubleshoot dropped frames.

Set OBS to YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec—but only if your shared connection can sustain it while other people and devices are online. A speed test is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that its measured upload capacity will remain available to your stream. Test with realistic video and audio, watch OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and lower the bitrate or output resolution if the connection cannot keep up.

Why a shared connection changes the bitrate decision

Your stream competes for upstream bandwidth with other household or office activity: video calls, cloud backups, uploads, security cameras and other streams can all draw on the same connection. The upload speed shown by a test is a snapshot of available capacity at that moment, not a reservation for OBS. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and rehearsing with similar motion and audio before a live event (YouTube encoder settings).

OBS says that dropped frames indicate the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its suggestion to start at 75% of total upload speed is a starting point, not a shared-network guarantee; concurrent use can leave OBS with less than that share (OBS stream connection troubleshooting).

Choose a YouTube bitrate for your video settings

There is no single correct OBS bitrate for every YouTube stream. YouTube’s recommended ingestion rates depend on resolution, frame rate and codec. These are target video bitrates for sending to YouTube—not estimates of your home upload speed or guarantees that a shared connection will deliver steadily.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

These recommended values come from YouTube’s published encoder-settings table, accessed in 2026. YouTube also publishes minimum bitrates; consult its current full table if you need to compare against those. OBS and YouTube support RTMP/RTMPS ingest, and YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Available codec choices depend on your encoder and setup.

Set and test OBS in a shared household

  1. Choose the target first. Decide the output resolution, frame rate and codec based on your content, encoder support and the quality you need. Fast motion can make a lower resolution or frame rate a practical choice when upload capacity is tight.
  2. Measure upload under realistic conditions. Run a speed test at a time and in conditions resembling the planned stream. If possible, account for normal household use rather than testing only when every other device is idle. Treat the result as a measurement, not dedicated OBS capacity.
  3. Set OBS bitrate with headroom. Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the selected codec and video settings as the quality target, but compare it with upload capacity that is reliably available during shared use. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload suggestion can be a starting reference; do not assume the full speed-test result belongs to the stream.
  4. Rehearse privately or unlisted. Send a test with representative motion and audio. Watch OBS for dropped frames and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube documents health and configuration warnings, including bitrate and keyframe issues, in its LiveStreams API documentation.
  5. Adjust and repeat if unstable. Lower the video bitrate, output resolution or frame rate, then test again. Change one factor at a time when possible so you can see which adjustment improves stability.

Diagnose dropped frames before changing everything

Different causes call for different fixes. Lowering bitrate can help when the configured stream exceeds stable upload capacity; changing the local network helps only when the local link is the source of instability.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Shared upload capacity is insufficient: Ask household members to pause large uploads or cloud backups during the stream if practical. Reduce bitrate or output resolution and retest. The trade-off is lower picture quality.
  • Wi-Fi is unstable: OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi instability is suspected. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one optional way to test a wired connection. Ethernet may improve reliability on the local link, but it does not increase your ISP upload capacity or remove congestion farther along the route.
  • Congestion persists despite a lower bitrate: OBS suggests trying another ingest server where applicable, enabling network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, or testing dynamic bitrate. Dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, but video quality can fall and the setting does not fix the underlying network cause. If the problem remains, OBS recommends contacting your ISP; congestion or route changes may be outside your control.
  • YouTube reports a configuration warning: Check the stream-health message and compare the encoder’s bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current requirements. A warning about encoding configuration is distinct from evidence that household upload capacity is insufficient.
