YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Configure the streaming encoder—not the separate recording encoder.
Set the streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds
- In OBS, open Settings, then select Output.
- Set Output Mode to Advanced if the streaming encoder controls are not visible.
- Open the Streaming section and locate Keyframe Interval for the selected NVENC encoder.
- Enter 2 seconds, then apply the change. Confirm that you changed the streaming value, not the separate recording value.
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance says: “Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as accepted live video codecs; the keyframe-frequency guidance is not limited to one of those codecs. YouTube’s live encoder settings
If the control uses frames instead of seconds
Convert the two-second interval using the outgoing frame rate: at 30 fps, set 60 frames; at 60 fps, set 120 frames. These are arithmetic conversions of the target interval, not separate YouTube recommendations. OBS NVENC documentation describes frame-based keyint controls and notes that its additional NVENC options begin with OBS 31.0, so labels and available controls can vary by version. Use the ordinary Keyframe Interval control when available rather than copying a custom option string that may not match your OBS version or encoder. OBS Advanced NVENC Options (31.0)
What the interval does—and does not—change
The interval specifies how often the encoder inserts keyframes into the outgoing video. It does not set bitrate, resolution or frame rate; YouTube treats those as separate encoder settings. YouTube lists CBR as the bitrate encoding mode for live video, but changing the keyframe interval alone does not configure bitrate. YouTube live encoder settings

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
NVIDIA’s OBS guide also recommends a two-second keyframe interval for YouTube streaming and describes configuring it in OBS’s Advanced output settings. Codec recommendations in that guide may depend on GPU generation; they are not a reason to change codec merely to use the two-second interval. NVIDIA’s OBS streaming guide
Common configuration problems
- The live stream still reports an incorrect interval: Check the Streaming encoder section in Advanced Output. Recording settings are separate and do not set the live ingest interval.
- You entered 2 in a frames-based field: That would mean two frames, not two seconds. Use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps, or use the seconds-based control if OBS provides one.
- You cannot find the same labels: OBS controls differ across versions and output modes. Select Advanced output mode and check the options for the active streaming encoder. Custom NVENC options documented for OBS 31.0 or later should not be assumed to apply to earlier releases.
- You are adjusting bitrate to fix keyframe timing: These are separate settings. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; diagnose bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for your resolution and frame rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video playing live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than an OBS/NVENC setting. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the service can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
