How to Fix Silence Between Songs on a YouTube Radio Stream

Find whether a song-boundary gap is in the media, playlist player, encoder output, or YouTube delivery—and follow the right troubleshooting branch.

First find where the silence enters the chain: check the source files and the song transition, then listen to the encoder’s output before changing YouTube or network settings. If the gap is already in a local recording or encoder preview, focus on the media, player, audio routing, or encoder. If local output is clean but viewers hear a gap, check YouTube’s stream-health information and compare reports from viewers on different networks.

Diagnose the gap before changing settings

A gap that happens at the same song boundary points first to the files, playlist transition, or duration and timestamp handling. A gap that happens unpredictably—or only for some viewers—calls for a different branch of troubleshooting. These clues narrow the search; none proves the cause by itself.

  1. Note what happened. Record the track names and approximate time. Distinguish complete silence from a brief dropout or viewer buffering, and note whether it repeats at the same boundary.
  2. Compare viewer reports. Find out whether one viewer, viewers on the same network, or viewers on different networks are affected. YouTube says a problem reported by one viewer may be local to that viewer; reports from viewers using different internet connections can point toward an encoder issue. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explains this triage.
  3. Play the exact source files. Listen to the end of the outgoing track and the start of the incoming one. If the silence is in either file, replace or correct the media, then listen to the revised files at the transition.
  4. Check whether it repeats at a playlist boundary. If it does, examine how the player loads and transitions files, including whether the next file is prepared in advance. Gapless playback depends on the playback pipeline; compressed audio can also involve codec delay. GStreamer’s stream-synchronizer documentation describes these considerations.
  5. Listen to the outgoing stream locally. Check the encoder preview or a local recording/archive, if available, at the same transition. This separates a gap generated before delivery from one that appears only on the way to viewers.

If the gap is in the source or local encoder output

When the file, encoder preview, or local archive contains the silence, changing the internet connection or YouTube delivery settings will not remove silence already present upstream. Work through the local audio path:

  • Media: Confirm the exact files used by the live playlist are the ones you listened to. Replace or edit a file with an unintended silent ending or beginning.
  • Playlist or player: Inspect the transition and loading behavior. If the problem recurs at the same boundary, test that transition with the revised media or player configuration.
  • Routing: In the encoder, confirm the intended media and audio sources are routed to the live output and that no source is muted or being switched off at the boundary.
  • Encoder health: Check the encoder’s error messages and CPU load while reproducing the problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, preview output, and a local archive.

If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, inspect the durations and compatibility of the listed files. FFmpeg reads files sequentially and uses each file’s duration to position the next one; its documentation warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. The files must also have the same streams, codecs, and time base. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. This applies to concat demuxing, not every playlist setup, and concat alone does not guarantee gapless playback.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

After a targeted change, replay or record the same transition and compare it with the original. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affected the gap.

If the local output is clean but viewers hear silence

If the encoder preview or local archive sounds normal at the same boundary, check YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health information and compare reports from viewers. Match each warning to the symptom it describes; a warning is not automatically an explanation for a song-boundary silence.

  • Viewers on one shared network affected: Compare with a viewer on another connection before changing the encoder.
  • Viewers on distinct networks affected: If local output remains clean, investigate encoder delivery and the outbound connection, alongside the stream-health report.

OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of trouble between the computer and the ingest server. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether the bitrate can be sustained by stable upload capacity and using wired networking when Wi-Fi may be unstable. An Ethernet connection is relevant only when the evidence points to network instability; it cannot repair silence present in the source or local encoder output.

OBS also notes that viewers’ devices, locations, and internet connections differ. Its buffering troubleshooting guide recommends checking dropped frames and says reducing bitrate can sometimes better accommodate viewers. Treat bitrate changes as a delivery diagnostic, not a fix for a gap already present in local output.

Do not use unrelated stream settings as an audio-gap fix

Do not change latency, HLS, sample rate, or video keyframe settings just because songs have a gap. First identify a matching diagnostic signal and confirm the actual ingest mode. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance gives HLS-specific audio recommendations, including 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 Kbps for stereo in HLS mode. Those recommendations do not establish that changing sample rate or switching protocols cures a between-song gap.

Retest the same boundary

Once you have changed a source file, player behavior, routing, or delivery setting, check the same track transition again. For a continuous broadcast, where practical, verify the change in a short controlled stream before relying on it for the full run.
