Get the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube

Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to use.

Open the stream settings. In the Stream URL field, click the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL.

Copy the RTMPS URL and the stream key belonging to that same stream. Use the values shown there; ingest endpoints and keys are stream-specific, so do not copy an unrelated example URL.

YouTube’s encoder instructions allow the URL and key to be entered separately when an encoder provides separate fields. A direct FFmpeg command may instead need the key included in the destination URL. Follow the exact URL/key formatting shown for your stream and the way your FFmpeg command accepts it; do not assume every endpoint uses the same format. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of screenshots, public logs, repositories, and shared command history. If it is compromised, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it.
Send a file with FFmpeg over RTMPS

The example’s 6000k values are not a universal YouTube recommendation; choose values appropriate to your codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bandwidth.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval; at another frame rate, the interval changes. Set the GOP to match the intended interval.-c:a aac -b:a 128kselects AAC audio at an illustrative 128 kbps stereo rate. Specify sample rate or channel layout when needed for your production.-f flvselects the output format used in FFmpeg’s RTMP-family streaming pattern.
Check the command’s destination carefully before running it: a placeholder is not a usable endpoint, and the key must match the selected YouTube stream. The command line may be visible to other users on a shared machine, so use a private environment and avoid recording the secret in public logs.
Choose video and audio settings for the stream
RTMPS itself does not determine your resolution, bitrate, codec, or audio settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Match your FFmpeg output to the stream you plan to deliver and the encoders compiled into your FFmpeg build.

YouTube bitrate examples

These are YouTube’s recommendations in its guidance checked in 2026, not guarantees of picture quality or rates that suit every connection. Use the corresponding YouTube guidance for other resolution and frame-rate combinations. The command’s 6000k example is below some of these recommendations and should not be treated as a preset for 720p or 1080p in every codec.
Keyframes, rate control, and color
- Set a two-second keyframe interval where possible, and do not exceed four seconds. For example, at 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames.
- Use CBR as YouTube recommends for encoder ingest. Confirm that your selected FFmpeg encoder and options actually apply constant bitrate behavior; naming a target bitrate alone does not establish that every encoder is operating in CBR mode.
- For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709.
Audio choices
- YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio. Its recommended stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
Confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream

Open the selected stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means viewers can see a healthy feed.

Test with representative movement and audio before the event. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth headroom of 20%; count the stream bitrate and any backup feed against the available upload capacity.

Before making the stream public, check that the material is yours to broadcast or that you have the necessary rights. A technically successful RTMPS connection does not establish permission to stream copyrighted material or guarantee that a channel meets YouTube’s rules for monetization or reused content.
Troubleshoot common RTMPS problems
FFmpeg cannot connect or times out
- Check the endpoint: confirm that you copied the RTMPS URL from the lock icon in the selected stream’s settings, not a URL from another stream or an unrelated example.
- Check key formatting: verify that the destination and stream key are combined or entered separately exactly as the selected endpoint and FFmpeg command require.
- Check RTMPS support: a timeout can result from a wrong endpoint or an FFmpeg build without RTMPS support. Confirm the protocol support in the installed build and test network access to the correct endpoint.
FFmpeg reports an SSL or TLS error
First verify the RTMPS server and URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests explicitly setting port 443 if an SSL error persists. FFmpeg’s TLS documentation describes peer verification and certificate-authority configuration; validate the endpoint, network path, and trusted CA configuration rather than routinely disabling certificate verification.
YouTube connects but reports poor stream health
- Compare the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance for the exact target format.
- Reduce the output rate if your connection or hardware cannot sustain it, and leave the recommended 20% upload headroom.
- Check that the selected encoder is available in your FFmpeg build and that the source’s audio and video are being encoded as intended.
- Use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators to distinguish an ingest connection from a usable, stable broadcast.
The stream key may have leaked
Reset the compromised key through an authorized channel owner or manager, then update the FFmpeg destination with the replacement. Do not continue broadcasting with a key that may be exposed.
