A YouTube stream-health warning during a 1080p60 loop does not automatically mean the bitrate is wrong. First read the exact Live Control Room error, then check the stream’s codec, selected ingest settings, encoder output, keyframe interval and connection stability. YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1/H.265; the correct setting depends on which codec you actually send.
What the warning tells you—and what it doesn’t
YouTube’s Live Control Room displays stream errors beside the Health Indicator. The wording and severity matter: red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. An unresolved message stays visible with a timestamp showing when it was seen. YouTube’s error-message guide describes the categories and their meanings.
Do not treat every warning as a bitrate diagnosis. YouTube reports separate issues for incorrect bitrate, video settings, keyframe frequency and resolution. By contrast, OBS defines network dropped frames as a connection to the remote ingest server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. One can coexist with the other, but they point to different checks.
Check the codec before changing 1080p60 bitrate
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives different recommended bitrates by codec. These are live-ingest recommendations, not YouTube upload-encoding settings. Compare the actual outgoing codec and bitrate in your encoder with the selected ingest configuration.

| 1080p60 codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. A minimum is not the same as the recommended target, and either figure is meaningful only when the codec and selected ingest settings match.
For an “incorrect bitrates” message, YouTube says that, unless you use a variable-resolution entrypoint, the exact bitrate for the selected resolution on the Ingestion Settings page is required. If your available bandwidth cannot reliably support the chosen resolution, YouTube advises lowering the selected resolution.

Verify output mode, keyframes and video settings
Use constant bitrate
YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate) for live encoding. Confirm the encoder is actually sending CBR rather than assuming a saved profile or preset has applied it.
Set the keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the encoder’s keyframe setting, especially after changing frame rate: keyframe cadence and frame rate are linked, so a frame-rate change can require a keyframe adjustment.

Match resolution and frame rate at both ends
Compare the selected resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s ingest configuration with the encoder’s actual output. A mismatch can trigger video-settings or video-size errors independently of bitrate. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Its transcoding of the incoming feed into multiple viewer formats does not remove the need to send a correctly configured, stable ingest stream. See Manage live stream settings.
Diagnose the warning in order
- Read and record the complete message. Open YouTube Live Control Room, note the exact error beside the Health Indicator, its red or yellow severity, and its timestamp. Do not diagnose from the generic phrase “stream health warning.”
- Compare the selected and transmitted video settings. Check resolution and frame rate in the ingest settings against the encoder’s actual output. Correct any mismatch before changing unrelated settings.
- Confirm codec and bitrate. Identify whether the feed is H.264 or AV1/H.265, then compare its actual configured bitrate with YouTube’s codec-specific 1080p60 recommendation and the requirement for the selected ingest configuration.
- Check CBR and keyframes. Confirm CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds. Recheck keyframes if you changed frame rate.
- Test upload capacity and stability. Run an upload speed test, then test the actual stream. A speed-test result alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable during a long broadcast.
- Compare encoder statistics with YouTube health. Watch both during a representative test. The encoder’s counters can show output or connection problems; Live Control Room reports YouTube’s view of the incoming stream.
When the symptom is dropped frames
If OBS reports network dropped frames or the stream intermittently disconnects, investigate the connection rather than treating the symptom as proof of a codec or keyframe error. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, recommends trying a wired connection as one diagnostic step.

A wired comparison can help isolate whether the current network path is contributing; it does not prove Wi-Fi is the cause, and it will not fix a wrong codec, bitrate, resolution or keyframe setting. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen quality, lower the resolution or otherwise choose a more reliable stream configuration, then test again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test a long loop, not just the setup screen
YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health during the event. A loop that runs for hours should be observed over a meaningful period rather than assumed stable from a brief setup check. For a documentary loop, test representative sections with the actual audio, motion, encoder settings and network path you plan to use.
