A 1080p label in the YouTube player does not, by itself, prove your encoder sent only 1080p. First check the encoder’s outgoing resolution and the input reported in YouTube Live Control Room; then check bitrate, connection health, and the viewer’s playback settings. YouTube detects the incoming resolution and frame rate by default and transcodes live input into multiple formats for viewers. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the distinction.
First determine where 1080p appears
There are two different things to check: the signal your encoder sends to YouTube (ingest) and the quality available or selected in the player (playback). A camera, game, or video source being 4K does not establish that the encoder is outputting 4K. Likewise, a viewer seeing 1080p does not establish that YouTube received only 1080p, because YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats.
- If the encoder output or Live Control Room input is 1080p: investigate encoder output resolution, scaling, frame rate, and the selected stream key.
- If Live Control Room confirms 4K input but a viewer sees 1080p: check the player’s quality menu and the viewer’s device and network. YouTube documents multi-format output, but that alone does not identify why a particular viewer has 1080p as the highest available option.
Check the encoder’s actual output
During the live session, inspect the active output resolution and frame rate in your encoder—not just the source or project canvas. Confirm it is sending 3840×2160 at 60 fps. If the encoder sends 1920×1080, YouTube receives 1080p even when the original camera or game is 4K.
If the outgoing signal is 1080p, check the encoder’s output-resolution and scaling settings, then verify that the correct profile or scene is active. Names and menu locations vary by encoder, so use its output or streaming settings rather than assuming the source resolution controls the broadcast.

Check YouTube’s stream-key resolution setting
YouTube’s default is automatic detection of the encoder’s incoming resolution and frame rate. In Live Control Room, inspect the selected stream key. If you need manual resolution selection, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. YouTube’s stream-key instructions describe the custom-key option.
A manual stream-key choice is not a way to turn a 1080p encoder output into 4K. Configure the encoder to send 4K60 as well, and compare its active output with the input shown in Live Control Room.

Match codec and bitrate to 4K60
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives different bitrate recommendations by codec. For RTMP/RTMPS, its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Video bitrate encoding should be CBR, with a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds. The 4K60 figures are:

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular setup will sustain the stream. Check that the encoder’s selected codec and actual bitrate match the relevant guidance. A low or unstable bitrate can contribute to stream-health trouble, but bitrate alone does not establish why a viewer’s player shows 1080p.

Test the connection and monitor stream health
- Test upload capacity. YouTube recommends running a speed test to assess upload bitrate. Compare sustained upload capacity with the bitrate you intend to send, leaving room for fluctuations rather than relying on a brief peak.
- Run a representative test stream. Include the kind of movement and audio your real stream will contain; a static test image may not reveal the same issues.
- Watch stream health in Live Control Room. Note any connection or bitrate warnings and compare their timing with drops or quality changes.
- Recheck the encoder output and YouTube input. Confirm both still report 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps during the test.
YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for the available connection and monitoring stream health messages. If the health status indicates trouble, test again at a bitrate your upload path can sustain. A wired connection may be one troubleshooting option, but YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular cable or guarantee that changing cables will solve a resolution issue.
Check what the viewer is actually watching
If Live Control Room confirms 4K input, ask a viewer to open the player’s quality menu and select the highest available setting. Check on another device or network too. YouTube says it transcodes live input into multiple output formats; the available or selected quality can differ with playback conditions. Its documentation does not establish one universal reason that a particular viewer may see only 1080p.

Quick comparison: 4K60 and 1080p60 guidance
If you are checking whether the encoder is configured for the intended mode, compare the matching codec and resolution guidance rather than borrowing a 1080p bitrate for a 4K stream.

YouTube’s encoder guidance also says low-latency improvement is unavailable for 2160p; 4K streams use normal latency. The bitrate figures above are YouTube’s current published guidance and vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Troubleshoot by symptom
