For a 24/7 YouTube cartoon loop sourced at 30 fps or less, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 10 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC at 128 Kbps. Use RTMPS and SDR Rec. 709. These are YouTube’s general encoder recommendations for 1080p30—not settings tested specifically for cartoons. Before committing to a continuous broadcast, verify your computer and upload connection can sustain them, monitor stream health, and decide how you will preserve an archive.
Recommended OBS profile for a 1080p30 cartoon loop
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | Sets the stream’s output dimensions. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps, or match the source when practical | For source footage at 30 fps or less, 30 fps is a sensible baseline. OBS cautions that 60 fps can use more system resources. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A straightforward compatibility baseline. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, but use another codec only if your encoder and workflow support it. |
| Rate control and bitrate | CBR, 10 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps | YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS, if available | YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. |
| Color | SDR, Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use HDR only when the source, encoder, and workflow are deliberately configured for it. |
YouTube’s advanced guidance also lists progressive scan, two B-frames, and one reference frame. These are platform recommendations, not the result of testing this particular cartoon stream. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats, so you do not need to produce every playback resolution yourself. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and live streaming tips.
Set the video and output settings in OBS
- Set the canvas and output. Open Settings → Video. Set the output-scaled resolution to 1920×1080 and the frame rate to 30 fps for a 30 fps-or-slower source. Match the source rate when possible; avoid converting a 30 fps cartoon to 60 fps without a reason.
- Configure the encoder. Open Settings → Output and select Advanced output mode if needed to reveal encoder controls. Choose H.264, set rate control to CBR, bitrate to 10000 Kbps (10 Mbps), and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS labels and available controls can vary by encoder.
- Choose an encoder your system can sustain. If a supported, stable hardware encoder is available, it can shift encoding work away from the CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but the best option depends on the hardware you already have; this is not a reason by itself to buy a particular graphics card.
- Set audio and color. Use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps. Configure SDR color as Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Leave HDR off unless the content and complete streaming chain are intentionally set up for HDR.
- Choose the secure ingest server. In the stream service settings, select YouTube and use an RTMPS server option when your encoder presents one. YouTube identifies RTMPS as its recommended secure protocol.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations are organized by resolution and frame rate, not by content genre. For a genuinely 60 fps source where retaining smoother motion matters, use the 1080p60 recommendation instead: 17 Mbps. YouTube lists minimum H.264 bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; those minimums are not the recommended targets. Check the current YouTube encoder table because platform guidance can change.
Make a 24/7 broadcast stable before launch
Check sustained upload capacity
Your outbound connection needs to carry the selected video bitrate consistently, with room for normal variation and other network use. OBS troubleshooting suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when choosing a bitrate, but that is a heuristic—not a guarantee based on a single speed test. For a long-running broadcast, watch actual dropped frames and stream-health messages under realistic conditions. If the connection struggles, reduce bitrate and test again. YouTube also advises testing that the outbound connection is sufficient for the stream.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Prefer a stable wired connection when practical; an Ethernet cable can connect the computer to the network but cannot create upload capacity or guarantee uptime.
- Pause or limit other uploads and heavy network use during the test and broadcast.
- Test for long enough to reveal instability rather than relying only on a peak speed-test result.
Test the real loop and monitor it
- Before going live, run a test using cartoon footage and audio with movement and sound similar to the intended loop.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then monitor audio and video quality while the stream is running.
- If recording locally, confirm the recording file is being created and continues to grow.
- For an operation that needs encoder redundancy, YouTube describes testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player switches to the backup encoder. This is an advanced option, not a requirement for ordinary creators.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A continuous stream is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a copy matters, record locally and verify that the recording is being saved. You can also end and restart the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours, while accounting for the interruptions that creates. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.
Which 1080p settings should you choose?
| Choice | When it fits | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | The cartoon source is 30 fps or slower | H.264 at 10 Mbps, CBR, with 2-second keyframes. |
| 1080p60 | The source is genuinely 60 fps and smoother motion is important | H.264 at 17 Mbps; confirm the computer and network can sustain the higher workload and bitrate. |
| Hardware encoder | Your computer already has a compatible, stable encoder | Can reduce CPU work; suitability depends on the hardware and OBS support. |
| Local recording or shorter sessions | You need a complete archive | Keep a local copy or split the broadcast into sessions shorter than 12 hours; longer YouTube streams may not be captured. |
Troubleshoot common OBS livestream problems
Dropped frames or unstable stream health
- Likely cause: The outgoing bitrate is too high for sustained upload capacity, or the connection is fluctuating.
- Try: Lower the bitrate, reduce other network traffic, and test again. Judge by sustained stream behavior, not just a speed-test peak.
Encoder overload or stuttering video
- Likely cause: The computer cannot reliably encode the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Try: Use 30 fps rather than 60 fps unless the source and use case justify 60 fps; consider a supported hardware encoder and retest with the actual loop.
The stream looks wrong in the preview or playback
- Likely cause: Output resolution, frame rate, color, or audio settings do not match the source or intended profile.
- Try: Recheck 1920×1080 output, source-appropriate frame rate, SDR Rec. 709, and AAC stereo. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before relying on the broadcast.
The archive is missing or incomplete
- Likely cause: The stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube may not capture streams longer than that.
- Try: Record locally and verify the file, or use sessions shorter than 12 hours if a YouTube archive is needed.
