To loop several video files on YouTube Live, install VLC alongside OBS Studio, add the files to an OBS VLC Video Source, enable Loop Playlist, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream. Test the playlist in YouTube’s preview before going live so you can confirm the picture and sound.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio and VLC: The VLC Video Source depends on VLC libraries, so install VLC for the source to be available. Match the architectures; OBS’s documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. The OBS media-source guidance is dated January 11, 2022, so interface details may differ by release. OBS: Media Sources
- Local video files: Have the files ready and decide their playback order. Check that each has the intended video and audio before adding it.
- YouTube live access: Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Initial live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of a planned broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
Build and loop the playlist in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, select or create the scene that will contain the videos.
- Add the VLC source: In the Sources panel, choose + and select VLC Video Source. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add and order the files: In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist and arrange them in the order you want. The source plays the listed order by default; turn on Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback.
- Keep the playlist repeating: Leave Loop Playlist enabled. It is on by default, and restarts playback after the final item.
- Review visibility and audio options: By default, the VLC source stops when it is hidden and restarts when visible. If you switch scenes, choose the continue, pause, or stop behavior that fits your setup. The default network cache is 400 ms, which may matter for network-hosted files; the default audio track is 1, so select another track if the file’s intended audio is elsewhere.
- Check the scene: Play through several points in the playlist and confirm that the video fits the scene and the audio is audible. Use the OBS audio mixer to check that the source is not muted.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select an encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream that uses encoder software. YouTube’s stream setup instructions are at YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key: Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter or connect the stream details. If using a custom server option, enter the URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key as a credential; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not show it on screen or share it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed. YouTube: Manage your live stream settings
Set output quality and encoder options
Choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain consistently, then use YouTube’s resolution-specific bitrate guidance rather than picking a bitrate by guesswork. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check the latest recommendations and bitrate table on YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
HLS is another YouTube ingest option for cases where codec or HDR requirements call for it. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments; use it only when those requirements matter rather than assuming it is interchangeable with RTMP/RTMPS for every setup. The detailed protocol and format guidance is on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Test, then start the broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS: Start the encoder output while your YouTube stream is set up. For a scheduled event, wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview.
- Verify picture and sound: Check the preview and stream health. Listen for missing, muted, or unintended audio, and watch for playback or connection problems. Test the actual playlist—including its audio and motion—rather than a still scene.
- Go live: Once the preview and audio are correct, click Go Live in YouTube’s Live Control Room for a scheduled event. Keep an eye on stream health during the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing before the event: YouTube: Live streaming tips.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having the right to play a video locally does not automatically mean you have permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other material on YouTube. Before streaming, confirm you have the necessary rights or licenses for every playlist item, including background music and clips. YouTube may detect copyrighted content during a live stream; review its guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Also consider whether a channel built around repeated or minimally changed material meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions: permission to use material does not itself guarantee that a channel or video qualifies for monetization. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies before relying on playlist streams as a monetized format.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing from OBS | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match architectures; OBS specifically documents 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| The playlist stops after the last file | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the VLC source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Playback order changes unexpectedly | Shuffle Playlist is enabled. | Turn shuffle off to play files in listed order. |
| A clip stops or restarts when changing scenes | The source’s hidden behavior is set to stop, which is the default. | Adjust the source’s visibility behavior to continue, pause, or stop as needed. |
| Video appears but intended audio is missing | The source may be muted, the wrong audio track may be selected, or the file may not contain the expected audio. | Check the OBS audio mixer, VLC source’s audio-track selection, and the file itself. Track 1 is the default. |
| YouTube does not show the encoder feed | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, the encoder may not be sending, or live access may not be ready. | Confirm OBS is streaming and the URL and key match the selected YouTube stream. Check channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| Preview is unstable or reports stream health issues | The selected output may exceed what the upload connection can sustain, or settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Test the real playlist, check YouTube’s health indicators, and use the bitrate guidance for the selected resolution. Confirm CBR and the recommended 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Someone else could use the credential to send a feed. | Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement. |
