PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchAdd both elements in the stream scene before the video reaches YouTube: use OBS to play the playlist, place a countdown source and a now-playing source above it, then send the composed scene to YouTube Live. A playlist alone does not make YouTube read filenames or display the current title. The exact setup depends on whether your countdown is for a scheduled start or for transitions between videos, and whether your playlist tool can expose its current item.
How the overlays fit into a 24/7 stream
OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) combines the video, countdown, and text into one output. YouTube receives that finished picture and audio; it does not automatically add a label based on the playlist’s current filename. For an automatically changing title, the playlist system must provide that information to an overlay. A regular OBS text source can show a fixed label, but it will not update itself from a playlist.
The instructions below describe a local OBS setup. OBS interface labels can vary by version, and the projects mentioned for automatic playlist information are independent third-party tools, not official OBS features. Check current compatibility and installation guidance for your operating system and OBS version before installing any plugin.
Build the looping playlist in OBS
For one video
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the stream.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the video file and enable its Loop property. OBS’s Media Source is suitable for repeating one local file.
For multiple videos
- Install a VLC version compatible with your OBS installation. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed and compatible with the OBS architecture.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a VLC Video source.
- Add the media files to its playlist, then set the source to loop if you want playback to restart after the final item.
- Choose ordered playback or shuffle according to your programming plan. Confirm the playlist plays as intended before going live.
Keep the video source below the overlay sources in the Sources list so the countdown and text appear on top. If an overlay is hidden, move its source above the video or check its visibility control.

Add a now-playing label
Fixed text
For a label that does not change—such as a channel name or “Now Playing”—add an OBS text source, enter the text, and position and style it in the preview. This is not a live playlist title: you must edit it yourself when the video changes.
Automatically updated playlist titles
Automatic title display requires a playlist tool that makes the current item available to an overlay. Two independent OBS projects describe this kind of functionality:

- 24/7 Playout describes a Now/Next display with progress and remaining time. Its repository describes a Windows x64 release and recommends OBS 32.x or compatible. Confirm the current release, operating-system support, and OBS compatibility before installing.
- OBS Playlist Deck describes an OBS dock that can show the current and next item and operate supported media sources. Its project page warns that its builds are unsigned; consider that security and trust implication before downloading or running one.
These project descriptions are not a guarantee that a particular release works with your setup. Follow the project’s current installation and configuration instructions, then test that the displayed title changes when the playlist advances. If your playlist tool does not expose its current item, an OBS text source alone cannot infer it from the video.
Add the countdown that matches your schedule
Decide what the countdown means before choosing a source. A timer to a scheduled broadcast start is different from a timer between playlist videos. The latter must detect each item’s end and restart for the next one; a start-time countdown does not do that automatically.

OBS’s official materials referenced here do not document a native countdown widget with exact setup steps. Choose a currently supported OBS script, plugin, or browser-based widget whose documentation explicitly supports the behavior you need. Check what it counts down to, whether it can remain visible throughout the stream, and whether it resets or updates automatically. Do not assume a source will restart between playlist items unless its current documentation says so. Add it as a source above the video, set its target and appearance using that source’s instructions, and preview the behavior—including the transition or start point—before broadcasting.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. YouTube’s interface and workflow may change, so follow the current on-screen prompts.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select the YouTube service and enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube, or use the connection method currently offered by OBS and YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start streaming in OBS and check the preview and status in YouTube’s Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s go-live flow there; starting the encoder and making the scheduled event public are not necessarily the same action.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that a 24/7 broadcast will be archived as one complete video, so plan separately if you need a recording of a long-running stream.

Choose a 24/7 operating method
For a local setup, OBS must keep playing and encoding, and the computer and internet connection must remain available. OBS notes that dropped frames can occur when the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; it says, “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” No local machine, network connection, or YouTube ingest is guaranteed to stay online continuously.
If you use YouTube’s HLS ingest instead of the usual OBS-to-YouTube workflow, YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are HLS-specific requirements, not settings you need to apply to every OBS stream.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a hosted service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. For countdown and now-playing overlays, confirm the current service features meet your needs before relying on them; do not assume a particular overlay capability.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: playback and streaming run in the cloud.
- One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for service details, then start your free day.
Troubleshoot common problems
The countdown or text is missing
- Check that the source is visible and sits above the video in the Sources list.
- Confirm the source is inside the active scene and within the canvas; a source can be present but positioned off-screen.
- For a browser-based or plugin source, follow its current setup instructions and verify that it is supported by your OBS version.
The now-playing title never changes
- A standard text source is static. Edit it manually or use a compatible playlist system and overlay that expose the current item.
- Check that the plugin supports the media source type you use and that it is configured to read that source. Test by advancing the playlist before going live.
The countdown reaches zero and stops
- Check the selected widget’s documentation: it may count down only to one scheduled time rather than restart for each playlist item.
- If you need a between-video timer, use an implementation that explicitly supports playlist transitions and test its reset behavior. Do not assume a start countdown will repeat.
Video does not advance or loop
- For one file, confirm the Media Source’s Loop property is enabled.
- For a playlist, confirm VLC is installed and compatible, the files are available, and the VLC Video source has the intended loop or shuffle behavior.
YouTube reports a weak or interrupted stream
- OBS identifies an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate as a cause of dropped frames. Check the connection and whether it can maintain the bitrate you selected.
- Check OBS and YouTube’s current streaming guidance for the correct encoder settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The sources cited here do not establish one bitrate that is right for every stream.
- For 24/7 operation, decide how you will detect an interruption and restore the broadcast; do not assume a local setup recovers automatically.
Copyright and monetization checks for documentary playlists
Only stream video and audio you have the right to use, including music, archival footage, and narration. A countdown or now-playing label does not change the rights status of the material. Before scheduling a long-running playlist, review YouTube’s current copyright rules and monetization policies, including its rules for reused content. Permission to rebroadcast material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions; do not treat one as proof of the other.
