There is no dependable one-size-fits-all VA rating: size a UPS for the combined power draw of the PC, monitor and network equipment you need to keep running, then check both its watt and VA limits. Runtime is a separate choice. A short bridge to end a broadcast and shut down safely needs less battery than keeping a stream online through an extended cut. Measure your setup and verify runtime for the exact UPS model at that load before buying.
Decide what the UPS must do
First choose the outage goal. UPS output capacity determines whether it can support the connected load; battery capacity and the load determine how long it can do so. A unit with enough watts and VA is not automatically a unit with enough runtime.
| Goal | What to keep powered | What to check | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridge an interruption and shut down safely | The essential PC, monitor and network gear needed to end the broadcast, save work and shut down | Exact-model runtime at your measured load | A shorter runtime target may allow a smaller battery system. |
| Keep the stream running through an extended cut | Every device required for the stream and internet connection | Exact-model runtime at the full load, and whether supported external batteries are available | Longer runtime can require a larger UPS or battery system and higher cost. |
Do not assume that a UPS will sustain a stream for a particular number of minutes just because its VA rating looks large. Use the manufacturer’s runtime information for the specific model and your estimated load.
Measure the full streaming setup
- List the equipment that must stay on. Count the PC tower, each monitor, modem or router, audio interface, capture hardware and any other essential device. Leave out equipment that can safely lose power during the outage.
- Find or measure each device’s draw. Use device specifications where they provide power consumption, or measure the running setup. A representative workload matters: account for the CPU and GPU activity expected while streaming, rather than relying only on idle consumption or the PC’s power-supply label.
- Add the load in watts. Total the wattage of the equipment that will be connected to battery-backed UPS outlets. Eaton’s calculator accepts watt or VA inputs and includes 230 V as a voltage option: Eaton UPS Power Calculator.
- Check both UPS output ratings. The rated output watts must exceed your total load, and the UPS’s VA rating must also be sufficient. Watts measure real power; VA measures apparent power. The relationship is power factor: watts = VA Ă— power factor, and VA = watts Ă· power factor. Eaton’s handbook illustrates the calculation with a 525 W load at 0.7 power factor, which equals 750 VA; that is an electrical example, not a streaming-PC estimate. See the Eaton UPS fundamentals handbook.
- Allow headroom, then verify runtime. Vendor recommendations differ: Eaton’s UPS sizing guide advises at least 15% more VA than the total load; Vertiv India and Eaton’s desktop guide advise 20% headroom; APC recommends UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above connected-equipment draw. Treat these as vendor rules of thumb, not a guarantee or universal engineering standard. Apply a margin to a realistic measurement, respect both UPS output limits and then check the exact model’s runtime at your load. Eaton explains that supported battery packs or larger battery systems can increase runtime.

Check waveform and Indian-market fit
Confirm the waveform specified for the exact UPS model and whether it is compatible with your PC power supply. APC recommends pure sine-wave output for the highest compatibility with active-PFC supplies. Eaton notes that waveform output varies between products and says to check the product specifications; some active-PFC computers require pure sine-wave output. This is a compatibility check, not a claim that every PC needs the same UPS. See the Eaton guidance on sine-wave and active-PFC compatibility and APC’s UPS buying guide.
For a purchase in India, verify the exact unit’s Indian-market input and output voltage, plug and outlet fit, service and warranty terms, and battery availability with the manufacturer or seller. Vertiv’s India-facing home-office UPS guidance likewise frames sizing around equipment draw and required runtime; it does not establish one universal model for every PC.

Why a single VA answer or runtime promise would mislead
Without your PC’s measured streaming load, monitor count, network equipment, UPS model, battery condition and runtime goal, an exact recommendation such as “buy a 1500 VA UPS” or “expect 30 minutes” cannot be justified. Compare candidate units on rated output watts and VA, runtime at your load, waveform, local compatibility, battery replacement support and warranty or service—not on VA alone.
APC lists 13 minutes for a “Gaming PC with one monitor” on its 900 W/1500 VA Back-UPS Pro Gaming example. The page says router/modem equipment is included in its default setups and that gaming times vary. This is a vendor illustration for that product and setup, not a prediction for an arbitrary streaming PC or confirmation of an Indian-market model. See APC Gaming UPS. For a model-specific lookup, Vertiv provides a Liebert GXT5 runtime tool.

Troubleshoot sizing and outage problems
- The UPS overload alarm sounds or it switches off under load: Recheck the combined draw, including monitors and connected network equipment. Confirm that the load is within both the UPS watt and VA limits; reduce the backed-up load or choose a unit with sufficient output capacity.
- Runtime is shorter than expected: Compare the actual equipment load with the manufacturer’s runtime data for the exact model. A workload heavier than the estimate, or battery condition, can affect the result. If the model supports external battery packs, confirm compatibility and runtime with its manufacturer.
- The PC restarts or behaves poorly when battery power begins: Check the UPS’s specified output waveform against the PC power supply’s requirements, especially if it uses active power factor correction (active PFC). Confirm compatibility for the exact UPS model rather than assuming all units provide the same waveform.
- The UPS does not fit the Indian socket or electrical supply: Verify the exact model’s voltage, plugs and outlets for the Indian market before purchase; do not assume a similarly named product sold elsewhere has the same configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
A UPS can keep your local streaming PC and connection powered for the runtime its battery supports. If your goal is simply to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Can a UPS guarantee that a YouTube stream stays online during a power cut?
No. It can power the connected equipment only for the runtime supported by its battery at that load; the stream also depends on the internet connection remaining available.

Does a PC power-supply wattage label tell me the UPS size I need?
Not by itself. Base sizing on the equipment’s real draw during the expected streaming workload, then check both UPS output watts and VA.
